3 CONTENTS Organizations Darlington, South Carolina Hot Buttered Soul Look at the mad young scientist A Dull Day at Mayo So ends another peaceful day at Mayo Troy at the wrong end. A Ima Mater For memories that never fade, For hopes and dreams that never die, For friendship that these days are making, We ll love you Mayo High. There’s a place in our hearts. That will never grow old Tho times depart. For the treasures you are giving us are like gold; We’re putting them away in our hearts forever, Alma Mater Dear, In Homage and loyalty due. And when all life’s victories at last we’ve won, We’ll pay tribute to you. In 1952, the words of the Alma Mater were written by Alice Jean Mack, who was then an eighth grader at Mayo. The tune of the Alma Mater is “Largo” by George Frederick Handel. MR. ITALY A. GREENE Principal A MESSAGE TO THE 1970 GRADUATING CLASS On behalf of the faculty and student body of our institution, 1 wish to congratulate you on your first noble achievement in your pursuit of an education — The earning of a high school diploma. I will not bore you with statistics which so emphatically prove that a high school diploma can mean dollars and cents in your budget as you live and work in our capitalistic society. Instead, 1 wish to use this opportunity to encourage you to continue your quest for an education for more intrinsic reasons. A trade certificate or a college diploma is truly a passport to the realm of service to mankind. The world is not only looking for men and women whose earning power is high, but whose brain power is equally as mighty; men and women who can think logically, whose ideals and attitudes are lofty and congenial. Remember that you are approaching your first true commencement, which in itself means beginning. Don’t stop now! Dig this thought, the content of a book is not determined by the color of its binder, nor by the number of its pages, but rather by the skill and quality of the author’s writing. We hope that these years you have spent at your alma mater have provided you with the maturity as well as the knowledge you need to really chart your educational careers. May all of you become happy, productive and worthy citizens in the communities you shall inhabit. May God bless all of you. 8 J?'. Qj ■ Jtyst , MISSC. J. YOUMANS Secretary mr. j. h. To the student body of Mayo, this is no obstacle. We take great pride and honor in all the fine qualities that our school has exemplified in the past. Togetherness is a word which describes our student body. In the words of the renowned patriot Benjamin Franklin, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.” United for a common cause, Mayo has produced outstanding scholar- ship, leadership, and character. Education is our objective and success is our goal. We owe a debt of gratitude to our principal and faculty for their encouragement, interest and guidance of the students in their endeavors. The combination of these forces plus the aid of our parents and the community have established Mayo as a great institution of learning. As president of the Student Council this year, my insights have been opened to new phases of life. It was very interesting to have the privilege to work with the administra- tion, faculty, and my fellow students. Sherrel Brockington, Student Council President. 29 Senior Class VICE PRESIDENT Troy Abraham ASST. My thanks go especially to the staff advisors, who were so interested in seeing that the work we did was efficient. When we put our minds together, fascinating ideas arise, and using good intelligence we, make decisions. It has been said, that no man is born into the world whose work is not born with him. From this, my staff and 1 have built a platform on which stands the everyday life of a Mayoite at school. 1 only hope that the Look of 70 has given you a moment of joy that will linger with you everytime you open the pages of this book.
