1969 GOLDEN BEAR Mayo High School Darlington, South Carolina I What makes Mayo What it is? A zealous student body and faculty Who are willing to Examine Observe Search Identify Who will, in short, Dare to TAKE A CLOSER LOOK. - TABLE OF CONTENTS Who are its members? Teens who matter— a lot today, even more tomorrow. Where are they going? Out. To see the world, to change it for the better. What makes them so sure? Instinct. And hope. They’re just going to try hard. MAYO HIGH SCHOOL The World Is Ours To Build Life is beautiful. There’s so much that’s ugly on the outside, but the beauty is there underneath, in human relationships, in contacts between people ... ”1 have promises to keep And miles to go before I sleep.” —Frost A winner never quits, And a quitter never wins . . . All the world loves a winner, and so do we. To win is among the joys of life. But winning comes not without courage, perseverance, hard work, tears and some defeat. The winner must have these attributes along with the interest of his fellow man. It is a pleasure to enumerate the fine qualities of one who has contributed significantly to making our school life meaningful and who, through his influence, has helped to gain recognition for our school. He is interested in the students. He is acquainted with hard work. He has known defeat. He is cheerful and optimistic. His motto is a challenge to us all, for truly, “A winner never quits and a quitter never wins.” We are extremely proud to dedicate the 1969 edition of the Golden Bear to MR. VIRGIL GRAHAM WELLS, II Coach Of All School Sports Teacher Of Science And Physical Education Focus On OUR PRINCIPAL Mr. Bennie Amos Gary THE PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE GREETINGS! ALUMNI, PARENTS AND FRIENDS This issue of the “Mayo Bears” bring to a close the 80th year of existence of Mayo in this community. We arc able to look back over the years with great pride and accomplishment in the area ol Secondary Education. Through sweat, tears and frustrations we have overcome many road blocks, yet, parents, students, teachers and friends of education have kept the faith. We have “crossed the Rubicon”, have improved in education and have encouraged every student to develop the innate talents which have been granted him by his Creator. 1 am happy to pay tribute to the dedicated teachers who have passed this way during those trying years and have left their foot prints upon the sands of time. Their service has been a path of light and inspiration to many who have continued to hold the torch high and passed it on to the unborn generations. By hard work and a profound belief in quality education. Superintendent G. C. Mangum of Area One Schools and County Superintendent Elect, Board of Trustees, County Board of Education, Parents, Students, Teachers and Friends have enabled Mayo High School to meet requirements for membership into the nation’s highest accreditation agency for Secondary Schools - The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. We are grateful to this community for the help and encouragement given during our struggle to reach this goal. Therefore, we must continue to improve our instructional program with new materials and techniques of teaching, with a new dedication to the spiritual and intellectual needs of our girls and boys in this rapid changing society. In the final analysis, a school is rated by its finished product. Our finished products are our graduates who will be job seekers, whom the employers will evaluate, not by school, but performance on the job. Therefore, it requires a cooperative effort on the part of parents, school and community to get them ready for this final evaluation by employers. We must become more effective, efficient and sensitive to the individual needs of our girls and boys. This requires teachers who are dedicated to the Profession of Teaching; whose resources involve quality teaching and arc mentally and physically elert in relating to the students that the job can and must be done. We must give the community a good product for money invested in our schools. Our students must be able to contribute to the democratic system their share of “Know How” in order to make it a rewarding enterprise, allowing each to participate according to his ability and preparation. We realize that the changes that occur from the time a student enters Mayo and leaves upon graduation will be determined by the way in which he will coordinate the available resources of our school. The changes can be evaluated only by knowing the student’s objectives when he enters high school. Therefore, it is important that teachers and counselors know in advance the directions and goals to be achieved by the student. We, Mayo High School Faculty and Student Body take this opportunity to wish Mr. Russell C. King, Sr., who retires from his position as efficient Superintendent of Darlington County Schools, many happy years, endowed with good hcaUh for the untiring hie i, Hprehin in the interest nf nualitv education for all bovs and girls of-Darliniiton County during his efforts, his dedication and leadership in the interest of quality education for all boys and girls administration. With our best wishes. Bennie A. Gary Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mr. Italy Greene Our assistant principal creates plans and sets them in motion. He is both a man of thought and a man of action - both dreamer and doer. Mr. Greene has faith in students. He believes and trusts in them and thus draws out the best in them. His warmth and his casual manner ease the most troubled student. He uses his heart as well as his head. After he has looked at the facts with his head he lets his heart take a look too. All we can give in return for his faith in us is our faith in him. He has helped to teach us who we are, but knowing him has been the greater experience. Office Staff Keeps Busy Miss Clara J. Pass The Pigskin, Please Blood — Sweat — Tears . . . These are the cries that begin the days of the football season. August, a month that is very hot and dry, greets the new and old players in a manner no one would know but an athlete. If something is to be achieved, there must be a lot of work, preparation, and effort put forth. The coaches will do their part in preparing the players for the season ahead, but it remains the task of the players to accept the challenges. This year was no different from any of the past years. The players that represent Mayo gave their hearts, their blood, their sweat and tears, to make the grid season of 1968 a successful one. Yes, doubts arose and players wondered, “Do I have the ‘stuff for the game? Will 1 be an asset to the team? Will I prove worthy of the Black and Gold uniform?” And once again, they did! It is composed of elected representatives and club officers who seek to provide friendly relations and coordinate activities with the faculty and administration. It can truly be considered as the school’s most essential organization. These students have also shown evidence of leadership and character. Each member must maintain an A or B average. Boxes are ready to go. Many students volunteered to help. This year the National Hon- or Society tried to become more active. They sponsored a Christmas project which in- volved distributing food pack- ages to underprivileged fami- lies. The project was well re- ceived and very rewarding for those members who partici- pated. FRENCH CLUB French is pursued by many young Mayoites, some of whom remain with the language during three years. Students are taught to read French newspapers while at the same time they gain an interest and awareness of a country other than their own. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA Training the girls of our high school to become good home- makers is the main purpose of this organization. The Future Homemakers helps girls to become better adjusted for the future when many will take on the busy role of wife and mother. The officers of this organization are: FIRST ROW-L. to R.: Herlina Simmons, Chaplain; Josephine Hooks, Vice President; Hazel Mance, President. SECOND ROW-L. to R.: Janet Jacobs, Reporter; Betty Kirven, Secretary; Ada Mack, Treasurer; Sherrell Brockington, Assistant Secre- tary. ruj mlwi f Tfll b if 4-H CLUB OFFICERS FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, the officers are: Celestine Parrott-Chaplain, Mary Gardner-Trea- surer, Cheryl Stanley-President, Idella Wil- loughby Reporter, Cheryl Parrott-Secretary. NOT PICTURED: Andrena Willoughby-Vice President. SCIENCE CLUB Science is, indeed, the key to the future, and it is essential that all students take a basic course in science. However, the Science Club was designed to give advanced students who are interested in this field a chance to explore its vast mysteries. The club conducts experiments and spends most of their time preparing science projects for the Annual Science Fair. PHYSICAL EDUCATION This course provides systematic instruc- tion in sports, exercises, and hygiene as part of the school program. DRIVER EDUCATION Throughout the year the driver education car has become a familiar sight to Darlington residents. Mr. Baker not only teaches the actual operation of a car, but stresses the safety precautions taken by good drivers. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Robert Kennedy once said that the purpose of education is not only to discipline and instruct, but above all to free the mind — to free it from the narrowness, the groundless fears and self-defeating passions of ignorance. We rely on these young future teachers for all our hopes of a better future. Like many others across the nation, they will some day dedicate their lives to a profession whose purpose is to “free the minds” of those who remain in the darkness of ignorance. Installation of the New F. T. A. Chapter In November, this new organization made its appearance before the student body. Charlotte Osterman, President, presides. THE DRAMATICS CLUB Using Shakespeare’s axiom that “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players” as their credo, the Dorothy Dandridge Players again ring down the curtains on another full and productive year. This year, in addition to festival activities, the Players tackled Ossie Davis’ three-act, smashing, Broadway comedy, PURL1E VICTORIOUS. Mrs. Doris Woods, the directress of the Players, has been busy discovering the best talents, skills, and abilities that exist in this club, and applying them where they will make the most effective contribution to the cultural phase of the school curriculum as well as to the community. These little cuties are the new members of the Dramatics Club. They are shown here during their initiation. MAYO’S BAND AND ORCHESTRA The joy of making music carries with it a purpose of life ... for without music life would be a mistake. The marching band performed during halftime activities at all of the home football games. The concert band, on the other hand, performed during many of our assembly programs. They also presented their per- formance at the Annual Christmas Concert at Mayo. They are preparing for their pre- sentations at the regular district and state music festivals. A Day With The Music-Makers THE MAYO CHORUS Mayo’s Mixed Chorus has had a very busy, but rewarding year. They were constantly called upon to perform during many school assemblies. However, they performed for affairs other than those held at our school. The choir sang at the annual county teacher’s meeting. They also rendered their beautiful voices in a performance at the city-wide prayer service, which was held during the time of the hectic presidential elec- tions. They broke into the Christman spirit with a distinguished Christmas Concert. After attending the music festival at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina, they re- turned only to begin working towards the An- nual Spring Concert. The members of the choir owe much of their acquired success and respect to the very dedi- cated Miss Carolyn Mack, directress of the group. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA For many Mayoites, high school is their final formal education. For this reason we must have practical subjects to meet students’ needs. One such course is agriculture. The main goal of this organization is to teach our future farmers the latest techniques in farming. Future farms will be run by many of these fine young men. OFFICERS OF FUTURE FARMERS FIRST ROW Left to Right: Freddie Dixon President Mary Goodson-Miss FFA Richard Holloman-Sentinel Theron Ham - Vice President SECOND ROW-Left to Right: Herbert Mills Chaplain Joe Dixon- Parliamentarian George Brown Reporter Jasper Joseph-Sccretary BUS DRIVERS Our bus drivers have the great responsibilty of transporting to and from school those students who live in rural areas. CHEERLEADERS This year the cheerleaders did a marvelous job in raising shouts of encouragement from the stands. Our girls cheered the football and basketball teams on to victory with all their hearts. We’ve got that Black and Gold. And a whole lot of soul Russell Johnson creates an artpiece. ART CLASS The desire to express oneself is of utmost importance in our complex world, and our art department provides students with such an outlet. Whether this course is taken for future vocational purposes or for appreciation of our culture, the enrichment gained will be beneficial. BUSINESS DEPARTMENT The skill subjects of typing and shorthand prepare the business-inclined student to step confidently into the secretarial or clerical field. Typists spend countless hours at the typewriters with which a classroom is equipped. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS A vital organization in our school is that of the library assistants. Members have the responsibility of keeping books in and out of the library, tracking down magazines and reference materials. These young librarians clear shelves and return books to their proper places. It is a time for us who are living to give of ourselves, our talents, abilities, devotions, convictions, that we may contribute to the onward march of man.
