I am gratified to extend my warm greetings to the students of Mayo High School and also the staff members of the “Bear” 1968 for a job completed in grand style. A greater portion of the Americans now enjoy the fruits of a high school education than ever before in the history of not only South Carolina, but also the entire nation. This is a symbol that indicates self-denial and hard work. But it is also a red light to remind us that the great battle against ignorance, poverty and prejudice, are yet to be won. This victory lies not in our financial strength, but in our will power. Never have students and parents been so deeply dedicated to eradicating the evils of ignorance, poverty and bigotry from the people of our state and nation. To the graduating class of 1968, I wish for you brighter goals in education, and a new resolve to achieve them are finding local and national expression. The faculty of Mayo High School shares your will to victory. I know you will extend a helping hand to the future generations in their struggle to make our state and nation a place where all men are brothers in Christ and where peace, goodwill and respect for the dignity of all mankind will prevail. Bennie Amos Gary 7
