In Memoriam “What is the secret of your life?’’ asked Mrs. Browning of Charles Kingsley. “Tell me, that I may make mine beautiful, too.’’ He replied, “I Had A Friend.’’ — Related by William Gannett All our little stores of wit and wisdom, our maxims, our mottos, accumulated from daily experience, evapor- ate and are of no avail when we attempt to describe the coming of death into an intimate circle of friends. Alan Reese was a friend in the truest sense, and cliches do not seem to touch or illuminate, in any effective way, that strange, vast presence whose wings darken the world for us. Alan Reese died in his sleep on August 11, 1966. Alan's death was unexpected and ill-timed for he was just beginning to explore, with a bizarre accuracy of perception, the chasm between education and knowledge; between law and social practices; between the world of ideals and the world of realities. Alan saw through the pretense, hypocrisy and paradoxes of our society. With uncommon sincerity, he insisted that we confront these ills and not cop out or lie about them. Was Alan a mere naive idealist? - I do not think so. The epitaph of Alan Reese is one of charity and understanding, not of hate; of mutual respect, not of prejud- ice; and of progress, not of complacency.
