CONTENTS Classes Faculty DARLINGTON, BODY OF MAYO HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH CAROLINA Editor’s Note As we look back on Mayo's history, we see evidence of vast im- provement through the years. They are improvements we would like to tell our children about ten-even twenty years from now. The staff and I have attempted to preserve Mayo’s history in the least possible pages-a history that will go down through the years as a monument. We want to look back and be proud of all that Mayo stood for and, we hope, will continue to stand for as long as it continues to mold the lives of the many students who will pass through its doors. Into our second yearbook, many hours of devoted work have gone into making it one that would appeal to faculty, students, alumni, and the general public. As a group of amateurs working together, we hope that The Golden Bear 1967 will meet with your ut- most approval. 5 Mr. Bennie Amos Gary Principal of Mayo High School B.A., Allen University M. Ed., Boston University Honorary Doctor of Humanities, Allen University 6 Because 1966-'67 is an unusually significant year at Mayo High School, this brief report is being shared with the alumni and student body. An extra- ordinary focus on improvements marked 1966-'67 as a special year in the life of Mayo High School. For the first time, the facts of a Band, Choir and Cafeteria Complex have become a reality and these facilities will give poise and direction to the students, as well as others concerned with school improvement in our community. A new eight-room complex has been completed at Pine Junior High School to house all eighth grade students, leaving grades nine through twelve at Mayo. All of these accomplishments were elements of two unique and significant factors: CHANGE and ENRICHMENT. We accept change as a characteristic of all life; the force of individual growth and change is guarded and directed by public institutions of learning. Today the capacious change beats faster and stronger than ever before. Every facit of our national life feels its power - most of all, and of utter importance to all others, education. In the secondary schools, perhaps, the most spectacular manifestation of change is the increased enrollment. Schools must concentrate on qualitative improvement, on enriching program and plants, and faculty and students' capa- bilities. It is our desire at Mayo to place ourselves in a position so that WE and the students who we endeavor to educate will be able to influence change for a better world in the future. In the year 1966-'67, Mayo addressed itself to these problems: 1. In- creased enrollment, 2. Qualitative improvement of our students, 3. Pro- gram enrichment, and 4. Quantitative improvements. 7 Bennie Amos Gary DEDICATION MR. JOHN ALSBROOKS, JR. MR. ALSBROOKS, BECAUSE OF YOUR LOYALTY, SERVICE, AND DEDICATION TO OUR SCHOOL, WE WOULD LIKE TO DEDICATE THE 1967 GOLDEN BEAR YEARBOOK TO YOU. YOU HAVE REPRESENTED OUR SCHOOL WELL, YOU HAVE WORKED FOR THE HIGHEST GOALS, YOU HAVE INFLUENCED OUR STUDENT BODY, AND YOU HAVE MADE SCHOOL LIFE ONE IN WHICH ACADEMIC ABILITY AND AMUSEMENT ARE INTEGRATED. WE ARE PROUD OF YOU, MR. ALSBROOKS, AND TODAY AS A SYMBOL OF OUR PRIDE AND GRATITUDE, WE HONOR YOU WITH THIS DEDICATION. Mr. G. C. Mangum Superintendent of Darlington Area Schools B. MURRAY SLATER 17 In Memoriam “What is the secret of your life?’’ asked Mrs. Browning of Charles Kingsley. “Tell me, that I may make mine beautiful, too.’’ He replied, “I Had A Friend.’’ — Related by William Gannett All our little stores of wit and wisdom, our maxims, our mottos, accumulated from daily experience, evapor- ate and are of no avail when we attempt to describe the coming of death into an intimate circle of friends. Alan Reese was a friend in the truest sense, and cliches do not seem to touch or illuminate, in any effective way, that strange, vast presence whose wings darken the world for us. Alan Reese died in his sleep on August 11, 1966. Alan's death was unexpected and ill-timed for he was just beginning to explore, with a bizarre accuracy of perception, the chasm between education and knowledge; between law and social practices; between the world of ideals and the world of realities. Alan saw through the pretense, hypocrisy and paradoxes of our society. With uncommon sincerity, he insisted that we confront these ills and not cop out or lie about them. Was Alan a mere naive idealist? - I do not think so. The epitaph of Alan Reese is one of charity and understanding, not of hate; of mutual respect, not of prejud- ice; and of progress, not of complacency. I often wonder what my epitaph or yours will be. Allard A. We were eager to meet the new challenges and adjust to a different sort of academic life. Members from our class participated in all of the activities offered. Several students were even placed on the accel- erated program. At the end of the term we felt enthusiastically ready for our first year of high school. YEAR OF EARNESTNESS Our first year of high school finally arrived and how elated we were! Settling down to more serious studying was one of our main objectives this year. We realized that being a little more mature and perhaps a little less frightened and anxious, we could really make this year count. We strove to achieve the best in our classes and to meet the long-feared challenges with more poise. We were always willing to represent ourselves in extra-curricular activi- ties: Dramatics Club, 4-H Club, Band, FHA, NHA, Science Club, Girls' and Mixed Choruses, the basketball and football teams. On achievement night several of our students received awards. They ranged from the highest scholastic average to that of punctuality and atten- dance. YEAR OF EXPECTANCY As sophomores we returned to school excited and full of curiosity from our summer vacation. The excessive laughing and talking soon faded into the past, however, as we crossed the horizon into a school term of hard work and a new sort of studying. This marked a turning point for us, and reflected the seriousness of our being ushered into the more adult phase of our education. Several of our students were inducted into the National Honor Society anc others were working hard so as to be admitted the following year. Lydia Earle won first place recognition in the Science Fair for her re- sourceful project on embryonic development. YEAR OF ACCOMPLISHMENT Frank Mance, president of our junior class, organized us well and followed through with wise and prudent leadership. A goodly number of our students were inducted into the Honor Society. On Achievement Night Renee White was awarded the highest Scholastic Average Award and the Mathematics award. Robert Gilbert received the Geometry Award. Lydia Earle and Billie Williamson won first place in the Science Fair. Willie Josey was recommended for the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Renee White was our class queen. The biggest event of this year was the Junior-Senior Prom with its theme: A Shower of Stars. We worked hard at this and took great pride in its production. YEAR OF EXALTATION Finally we are seniors! This is the year 1966-67 and we are eagerly awaiting graduation. Six seniors were inducted into the Honor Society and seven were honored at the Science Fair. They were: Deloris Hudson, Patricia Samuel, Johnnie Reason, Catherine Myers, James Johnson, and Patricia Lamb. The Science Fair: Flora Nettles and Robert Smith, first place in Physics; Billie Williamson, second place irr Physics; Sherbie Parnell, first place in Chemistry; Honorable Mention for Willie Josey in Biology and Leroy Mills and Dwight James in Physics. Renee White was Star Student for SAT. Robert Campbell, Ernest Coe, and Martin Dabreu were awarded the distinguished honor of being All-Star players. Frank Mance is our president and our queens are: Deloris Hudson Patricia Simon Brenda Richardson Judith Coker Cleo Hough Rose Marie Jones Claudia Bowens Diane Good son Alice Damon Patricia Lamb May we continue and complete the work begun with insight, grace, and 36 Junior Officers LEFT TO RIGHT: Marshall Davis, President; James Bradley.
