JlTeet U£e ()fia lenye Of JAe Juture To the faculty and student body of Mayo High School: I am deeply appreciative for the honor which you have bestowed upon me by dedicating to me the first Mayo annual, The Bear 1966. I feel humble and unworthy of such honor. However, I accept this honor with deep humility and trust that I may be able to measure up to the expecta- tion and confidence placed in me. As we look to the future, may our hopes bring greater challenges to all men everywhere. Education in its simpliest meaning is the communication of ideas and information from teacher to students, the inspiring of young people by older ones, and the generating of a yearning for learning. Mayo is looking to the future. We do have in fact better buildings, apparatus and libraries which are necessary for a better education in this changing world. The facilities are increasing as funds become available from our county, state, and Federal Government. This places a greater responsibility upon teachers and administrators to see that priority with regard to needs of the children of the various communities are met, thereby, providing the children of our community with necessary buildings, materials, and equipment to meet the challenge of our time. As these needs are met, it becomes all the more important that we also have teachers who can in- spire while enlightening, who can excite while interpreting and explaining, and who can give both direction and discipline to young minds. Such teach- ing will do more than any other single thing to help our young people to meet the challenge in our complex society, thereby, decreasing the dropout rate in our public schools. 7 Bennie Amos Gary
