I hope that this book will be cherished and treasured by each reader for years to come. We have attempted to illustrate, by use of pictures and words, the many sides to any student's life at Mayo: the academic front, in which he prepares himself to provide for his family and himself; the social front, in which he leams how to live with his fellowman; and the organizational front, in which he learns the importance of each person’s performance to the effective performance of any group. All of these combined with each student's own natural aptitudes make Mayo what it is. We hope what has been started this year will continue as a tradition that will give each class a book filled with unfading memories. Ed., Boston University Honorary Doctor of Humanities, Allen University 6 JlTeet U£e ()fia lenye Of JAe Juture To the faculty and student body of Mayo High School: I am deeply appreciative for the honor which you have bestowed upon me by dedicating to me the first Mayo annual, The Bear 1966. I feel humble and unworthy of such honor. However, I accept this honor with deep humility and trust that I may be able to measure up to the expecta- tion and confidence placed in me. As we look to the future, may our hopes bring greater challenges to all men everywhere. Education in its simpliest meaning is the communication of ideas and information from teacher to students, the inspiring of young people by older ones, and the generating of a yearning for learning. Mayo is looking to the future. We do have in fact better buildings, apparatus and libraries which are necessary for a better education in this changing world. The facilities are increasing as funds become available from our county, state, and Federal Government. This places a greater responsibility upon teachers and administrators to see that priority with regard to needs of the children of the various communities are met, thereby, providing the children of our community with necessary buildings, materials, and equipment to meet the challenge of our time. As these needs are met, it becomes all the more important that we also have teachers who can in- spire while enlightening, who can excite while interpreting and explaining, and who can give both direction and discipline to young minds. Such teach- ing will do more than any other single thing to help our young people to meet the challenge in our complex society, thereby, decreasing the dropout rate in our public schools. 7 Bennie Amos Gary J ecficaiion An Aonor of fAe years of c ec icatecA service to tAe fas A f affecfiny ancA moAc iny fAe Awes of fAe fAousancts, fAaf Aaue passecA fArouyA fAe cAoors af JACayo AAiyA, info an infeAAiyenf refinecApeopAe aSAe fo parfaAe of fAe promisecAyoocAin fAe “SAreat Society ”, cue cAo cAecAicate our first annuaA tAe 1965 uSAoAcAen A5ear” to Dr. A3ennie Almos lAary, principaA of Alt ay o AAiyA. a or Hhe re as ures o u 're (Jioiny (Us V Administration an f Aacufty Mr. G. Educator 35 Gfass 3I is tory In 1961 we began our first year at Mayo as eager beavers with determination and ambition to strive to be the best class in size, scholarship, leadership, and service. Knowing that we could not excel with- out togetherness, determination, and the help of our teachers, we would like to thank our parents, teach- ers, and the community for all the opportunities given us during our years at Mayo. Now, we will share with you some of our class experiences and make note of a few of our outstand- ing students. YEAR OF PREPARATION As eighth graders at Mayo, everything was new to us, but we were determined to make it to the top. Everyone was trying hard to make the honor roll. Most of our grades were average and many were ex- cellent. We were well represented on the many organizations at Mayo. Miss Eighth Grade was charming Miss Judy Ross. Her escort for the coronation was Mr. Sammie E. Jackson. On Achievement Night, Linda Wingate received recognition for being the eighth grader with the highest scholastic average. The enjoyment came for all of us at the eighth grade social which was in the form of a Valentine's party. YEAR OF ENTHUSIASM As you know this was our first year of high school. So we, as freshmen, began our first year of high school with an enthusiasm that grew as we made progress. We worked hard trying to maintain some of the goals our fellow Mayoites had accomplished. Our representation in extra curricular activities such as: Mixed and Girls’ Choirs, Band, Dramatics and 4-H Clubs, Football, Basketball, NFIA, FFA, and T I increased. The Home-makers' Ball and the Ninth Grade Social really topped off the year for us. YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENT Although we were all disappointed about our homecoming exercises this year, our spirits did not falter. As Sophomores, we were now eligible for induction into the Bennie Amos Gary Chapter of the National Honor Society. We had a total of fourteen inductees. They were: Irene Anderson, Patricia Bacote, Judith Blackmon, Thelma Brown, Pearl Capers, Julia Coe, Sadie Curtis, Cheryl Hayes, Sammie Jackson, Boyd Johnson, Vermella Kelly, Jean Lamb, Ronald Norwood, and Linda Wingate. CVass 3!is tor (j On Achievement Night Ronald Norwood was commended for outstanding achievement in English. The highlight of this year was the Sophomore Ball. YEAR OF DETERMINATION Charming Miss Marcella Jenkins represented the class as Miss Junior, her escort, Mr. Boyd John- son. Sandra Clemmons and Patsy Yarborough were inducted into the Honor Society. In addition to getting all of the knowledge we could from the printed pages and other sources, every junior and senior was looking forward to none other than the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme for the prom was Arabian Nights and our color scheme was red and silver. Three of our members, who were on the accelerated program, graduated with the class of '65. YEAR OF SUPERIORITY At Last We Are Seniors!! We are the first class to start the Mayo High School Yearbook. We also claim with pride on being the largest class that has graduated, not only in size, but in scholarship, fellowship, service, and determ- ination. Miss Sandra Clemmons was elected Miss Mayo by the student body. Misses Pearl Capers and Jean Lamb were her attendants. Ronald Norwood, a finalist, and Sammie Jackson, a semi-finalist were the first students to be com- mended in the National Achievement and Scholarship Program from Mayo. Robert Dixon, Samuel Jett, and Wallace Richardson were elected to play on the South Carolina Allstate Football Team. Robert Dixon was also nominated for an athletic scholarship. Our five years at Mayo High School have given us the chance to further develop our many skills. We have not only developed our skills academically but also physically by better classroom decorum.
