MAYNARD PUBLIC LIBRARY 5957 p0046 5 Maynard, Mass 38 I I r i u Another Year Another year A new locker to break in Old friends, new enemies “Ravisanga?” A new schedule “Where the hell is room 203?” New teachers “Oh my god! Don ' t tell me you’ve got her!” Just another year Applying to colleges “Been accepted anywhere yet? Appointments with Purdy’s and Sam’s “Can I have one of your pictures?” Thinking Of today and tomorrow Where to go? What to do? Leaving much behind But much lies ahead The end But really a beginning We may be going But Maynard High School will still be here After all, it’s just Another year A school year is made up of hundreds of little mo- ments; some important, some not, but all of them very precious. To do justice to all these special times is really impossible, but that’s what a yearbook is supposed to do. Through much crying, screaming and even a little love. The Class of 1977 has put to- gether a collection of memories of our senior year. It is our hope that these pages may some how help you recall that special time, 1976-1977 at Maynard High School. The 1977 Screech Owl Staff remember me - ' TP if j® 1 A-ffl yy 1 IN DEDICATION This year, the staff of the Maynard High School Screech Owl chose not to dedicate the yearbook to someone who changed our lives, but to a friend. A friend is someone who will share a laugh or give you his shoulder, regardless of whether you need it to lean on or to cry on. If these things are so, then the 1977 Yearbook is dedicated to the right person. This man has had a long and distinguished teaching ca- reer, and is respected both by his students and his peers. But this man ' s dedi cation for his students and his school goes long beyond 2:25 Athletics-wise, this man helps out with football, track, softball and wherever else he is aked to, as well as being the drive and determination behind the MHS Junior Varsity Basketball team. But this is not this man ' s only responsibility; for the past four years, he has been the guid- ing spirit behind the memory book of MHS, the ‘Screech Owl. With this year ' s “Screech Owl,” The Yearbook staff attemp- ted to do something a little special, a little more personal for the Class of ’77, and, in doing so, we departed radically from the traditional yearbook form. Rather than hold us back, this man not only pushed and prodded us toward our goal, but led us all the way. This book is as much a part of him as it is of our class. And so, the 1977 Maynard High School “Screech Owl is dedicated to a friend who helped us remember our very spe- cial Senior year, someone who we will remember always — Mr. Paul Henning. At the start of the 1976 football season a 5-5 season might have been suspected but not a 5-5 sea- son as exciting as this one. The season started off with two heart stopping one point victories over Clinton on opening day and Bed- ford on the home opener. These were the least of the heroics and there was a lot more to come. After 5 games the Tigers had battled their way to a very impressive record of 4-1. The last of these wins coming in the last seconds against Marlboro by again one point 15-14. The heroics of Jim Au- lenback and Chris Duggan had made this team very hard to beat. A tough loss to Milford on some questionable calls seemed to phase the Ti- gers a bit but they came right back against Con- cord and pulled out ano ther one pointer this time by the score of 22-21 . The game was one of the biggest games of the year. It was against undefeated league champs of Algonquin. The Tigers again almost pulled out a victory in the last seconds but the heroics just weren’t there. At this point a repeat of last years 7-3 season looked excellent. However in the mud of Hudson the Tigers were stunned 14-0 before they could say ouch! All that was left now was the big turkey day game against Acton-Boxboro. How sweet it would have been to end this thrilling season by keeping the Beacon Bowl in Maynard. MARCHING BAND With a crash of the cymbals and a whirl of the baton, the Maynard High School Marching Band completed another su- cessful season of halftime festivities. Through the combined efforts of Charles Garabedian and Steve Tolman, the band put on a dazzling array of sound and movement. Hats off to the MHS Marching Band. They fill the air with cheers of an- ticipation as well as shouts of joy- ful accomplishment. They lead the crowd through victories and keep their spirits high during defeats. Perhaps the best way to ap- preciate their importance is to imagine an event without them. V Jn WAVM Under the charismatic guidance of Media Director Joseph P. Magno and the WAVM Board of Directors, the station greatly in- creased its listening audience through bright and innovative types of programming, including a live broadcast of one of this year’s dances. 1977-78 promises to be an even bigger year for the school station, so keep tuned to WAVM, 91.7 FM, ‘The True Pride Of Tiger Town.” Besides being the base for WAVM the library also houses two other organizations which perform vital functions in the school. The li- brary aides make sure everything is in its place, especially for those sophomore term pape rs, while the AV Club keeps harried teachers happy with prompt media atten- tion. JUNIOR VARSITY: Maureen Boothroyd, Patti Brown, Margaret Johnson, Lisa Manzo, Ilona Rodsodowski, Paula Davis, Karen Holmes, Jamie Duggan, Cheryl King, Nancy Varrichione, Eileen Foley, Brenda Lockhart, Lisa Calabria, Karen Mardero- sian. The Girls Basketball team played a fine brand of basketball during the 1976-1977 season. Led by Terri Kramer and Darlene Dimery, The Tiger Club were competitive and exciting. The new zone pressure defense established this year kept the opposing teams at work bring- ing up the ball in order to beat the thirty second clock. With Sharon Duggan, Martha Forster, and Helen Campbell supplying the pressure, many teams gave up the ball to the Tigers. Although the team did not win a league cham- pionship, a new spirit was found. The Girls Bas- ketball team discovered that their hard work did pay off and they could compete with anyone. This spirit should carry over to next year and an excit- ing year it will be! ai ■ VARSITY: Jeff Lent, Jim Aulenback, Doug Johnson (tri-captains), Bill Duggan, Dave Mariani, Rick Gross, Mike Brick, Mike Be- als, Alan DeValle, George Vacca, Paul Shaw, Mike Connors. JUNIOR VARSITY: Bert Backrach, Jim Co- gan, Dave Duncan, Mike Connors, Don Bibbo, Bob Alexander, Bill Pileeki, Scott Shepard, Jon LeBlanc, George Vacca, Bill Jarmolowicz, Kevin Forster. BOYS BASKETBALL The Boys Varsity Basketball team was not very successful as far as record during the 1976-1977 I season, but they were productive in at least one area. In every game but three, our opponents knew they had been in a ball game. Led by seniors Jim Aulenback, Doug Johnson and Jeff Lent, the Tigers made much of the Mid- land League take notice. With Jim and Jeff taking care of the outside and Doug the inside, the team had a solid nucleas. Juniors Dave Mariani, Billy Duggan and Rick Gross rounded out the team. Key injuries during the season hurt the Tigers but they continued to play hard, winning two out of their last three games. With five Juniors returning and some promis- ing Sophomores coming up, next year might prove interesting. Varsity Roster: Paul Martin, Dick Barilone, Greg LeBlanc, Steve Dahill, Jeff Price, Mark Clancy, Paul Barilone, Peter Bus- cemi, Jim Morgan, Rich Egan, Ward Emanuelson, Bobby Sarvela, Mark Redi- ker, Dennis lanerrelli, Dick Tobin, Tom Clancy HOCKEY MHS’s Hockey Tigers kept on fighting all season and tied for seventh position in their league. Though the team loses star player Paul Martin to graduation this year, the MHS Hockey Tiger promise to grow bigger and better each season. J.V. Roster: Bill Egan, Dennis White, Neil Catoni, Steve Flan- nery, Tim McCabe, Dan Ferguson, Kevin Brooks, Barry McNulty, John Dyer, Mike Syluski, Mike Murphy, Steve Martin, Tom Whalen, Bobby Terrasi, Dave Morash. Once again, the Maynard High School Tiger Hock- ey team in it’s 76-77 season found itself a little fish in a big pond. Competing with some of the toughest teams none the less held it’s own and gave some stiff competition to many powerful area teams. Under the combined efforts of Coaches Charley Huck and Jackie Richardson, MSAC The MSAC, the reorganized ver- sion of last year’s G.A.A., provides a needed, if unheralded service to Maynard High School. Students involved give support to all sports activities at the school. This year, for example, the MSAC sponsored a buffet after the Midland League Cross Country meet which was held at the Maynard Country Club. This organization is one where the members benefit by giving. ttit: OUTDOOR CLUB The Outdoor Club is a new orga- nization at Maynard High School this year. Under the guidance of Mr. Don Cranson and Mr. Al Steb- bins, students are becoming aware of beauty and wonder of nature. Cross Country Skiing and a hike up Mt. Manadnock are only two of the activities enjoyed this year. ART CLUB New to M.H.S. for 1976-1977 is the high school’s art club. Under the guidance of Mrs. Beverly Smith, these aspiring young tal- ents learned advanced techniques for sketching, painting and sculpture. The Highlight of the club’s school year was an exhibi- tion, held earlier this spring, in which many of the members works were displayed for the first time. ■ .; ' T ’III; I 1 i ' ; 1 • 1 r !. , - H ? 1 it in 1 ) ' ■ L,in( u,i()«- FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLUB A fierey advisor with the speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty “Quelle heure est t,il?” The Maynard High School Foreign Language Club rides again. Right from the start, the 1977 ‘‘Screech Owl” staff was determined to make this yearbook a little different, a little daring, a little special. Hours were spent picking out pictures, writing and typing copy, making layouts and artwork to give the yearbook it’s own special tone, to make it stand out a little, to be original. Some people will love what we’ve done here. Others will not. Be it praised or damned. We stand proudly by this yearbook and call it ours. At least in passing. The ‘Screech Owl” would like to thank those people who came through for us in our hour of need. We’d like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Magno and Mr. Daniels, who got us the photos we needed by whatever means necessary. As well. The “Screech Owl” owes a debt of grati- tude to yearbook staff members Lori Greenaway, Cathy Rodgers, Chris Trakimas and Patty Clancy, who went out and got the advertisements for the book, which kept us from running the first yearbook car wash. Most of all, A heartfelt thanks to Mr. Paul Henning, the “Screech Owl’s” advisor, who under- stood what we were trying to do and had the courage to stand by us and lead the way. With this letter. We finish. And, despite all the screaming, threats and hard work. We think it was worth it. Our aim was to present an honest picture of the school year of 1976-77, Our senior year. Looking over the rest of the book, I think you’ll agree we succeeded. Lori Daniels Co-Editor James Hill Co-Editor Layout Editor [ «;r . ■ ji.ii..
