He fixes his star in the future and follows it through fife. We, the class of 1971, have our special dreams and ambi- tions. Soon, we will be scattered around the world, each with his own “tomorrow.” The coming events that face us will be richer because of the past. In these pages the experiences and aspirations of our four years at Maynard High School are pictured. We hope you will enjoy these reflections of our memo- ries, our times, and our town. 3 4 “A little one-eyed, blinking sort of place” is what Mark Twain would have called it in 1871. That was when a few houses, some shops and a hand- ful of resourceful New Englanders became a town — Maynard. Since then, we have grown quite a bit and this year we are celebrating our Cen- tennial. We have captured scenes of our town in the hope that we will never forget “old homes, old friends and old splendors.” 5 Moments To Remember . . . To Mr. Lerer for years of service and dedicated teaching. In Room 203 we have delved into the mysteries of Avogadro’s number, broken test tubes, and discovered “challenging.” We swallowed helium, made our own “still,” and in between learned a little chemistry. Just as this has been our last year, so it has been his. The faculty of Maynard High School is losing a re- vered colleague and the student body a valued teacher. We hope this single page displays in some small measure the respect and gratitude we hold for our beloved “La.” 15 Administration And Faculty ALBERT LERER Superintendent of Schools JOSEPH P. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. Henry David Thoreau “All of your knowledge is in order. All plans are made. Your forces are arranged for battle. Now reach out for other allies. In- voke every power. Summon up the emotions and set the blood astir. Bring everything to a focus of controlled fury. Then depend, significantly, on the flip of a coin to begin. Send the football soaring and feel your expectations hang in the violated air by sounds break- ing overhead and fresh forces sweeping over the green toward the first collision of hopes.” 30 32 The Student Council Taking on a “new look” this year by declaring class officers non-voting members the MHS Student Council put many new and exciting ideas into action. President Sue Howes began a drive for school spirit by organizing a pa- rade before the Hudson game, complete with the band, cheerleaders, floats, and Captains. The following week an ambitious and determined committee artfully decorated the entire school in resplendent black and orange. Both of these efforts were successful, and the Tigers trampled the Hawks and the Gaels. On the legislative side, the dance dress code was changed to a more modern and comfortable mode. The Honor Pass system is now under discussion at MHS, and the Student Faculty Judicial Committee is beginning to fu nction as an “appeals board” for students. For the Centennial, a committee has been formed to organize and direct a “Youth Day” this summer. This year has been one of self-evaluation for the Coun- cil and the future appears to be hopeful and bright. 33 VARSITY: Denise Howes, Mary Jarvi, Bobbi Caisey, Phyllis Agin, Captain; Beth Hellawell, Cathy Piecewicz, Kris Lehto, Mary Moynihan, Eileen Smart, Sue Morrissey, Cathy Cutaia, Susan Howes, Liz Popeniuk, Kitty Kitowicz, Martha Whittemore, Coach. Held in February this year (a romantic month for hearts and flowers!) at Russo’s Restaurant, the dinner dance was a resounding success. The girls have a serious side, too, which was demonstrated by their charitable work on the Cancer Drive and capable hostessing at the Parent Teacher Confer- ences. Other activities this year included a hayride and profitable food sale. Winding up these enjoyable and varied activities with a banquet at the Old Mill, members of the club reflected contentedly on the 1970-1971 season. 52 “Gentle sunlight gleams o’ r the meadows and warms the eirth below. 54 Prom Queen Patricia Zancewicz and her Court: Linda Chambers, Kathy Farren, Cathy Corcoran, Cheryl Dippel, Kathy Flaherty, and Annemarie Porreca. 55 “She Dressed Me In The Finest Clothes . . A wise and friendly mentor, her helpful presence will be sorely missed. Succeeding Miss Sawutz as advisor is Mr. John Golec, a popular choice, chosen by a substantial margin by the members. His infectious good spir- its resulted in a sleigh ride, held just before Christmas and enjoyed by all those who at- tended. On the more serious side, the induction of new members was held in May. TRACK TEAM In our four years at Maynard High, the track team has come a long way. As Freshmen, the Class of ’7 1 participated in the Tigers first winning season in a long time. As Sophomores and Juniors the team was undefeated and it is our hope that this will also be true in our Senior year. The 1970 track season got off to a great start in Maynard, as the Tigers cap- tured a majority of first places to take the Midland League relay meet. They then proceeded to beat every team in the League. In Marlboro, the Tigers broke loose taking the League title and leaving in the dust a pack of dazed contenders. Maynard owes a lot to the efforts of Jim Owens and his assistant Bruce Koski- nen. Tri-captains Chris Morrissey, Nick Sebastyn, and Ben Taylor have lead these seniors in their last track season at M.H.S. Dan Shostak Paul Nilsson Bob Latas Alan Sale August Rogers Doug Robblee Robert Quinn Jackie Piecewicz BiU Watt Dave Gott 64 TEAM Sue Howes Joyce Sinicki Amy Yanni Mary Gudzinowicz Kris Lehto Cindy Fairbanks Sue Morrissey Eileen Smart Helen Morgan Sue Nevala Mary Moynihan Linda Panetta Beth Wattu Marie Shear Shirley Smart Nancy Morrissey Carol French Tina Campbell Fern Muise Tara Zantow Coach Kulevich I Baseball 1971 saw a much improved Tiger Team take the diamond. Under the spirited and adept coaching of Mr. Ken Najjar, our Maynard Nine “knocked the cover off the ball” all season. Captain Tony Rioux, along with Seniors Billy Bakun, Det Klein, Mike Ollila, Dave Tucker, Ken Regan and Steve Staszewski led the team to greater and greater successes at the plate and on the field. Once again, the Roar of the TIGER was a mighty one! 67 Golf A Veteran MHS Golf team took to the links with high hopes of a successful season. Though their accomplishments were overshadowed by the glorious track team, it ranked as one of the best years ever in the short history of the unheralded sport. What was lacking in talent was more than made up for in the players’ love for the game. Golf could be on the upswing on the TIGER scene. 68 I Ladies KATHRYN GUDZINOWICZ Long hair . . . boys! . . . office girl . . . perky grin . . . Sears . . .
