One of our most cherished associations has been with you, our cla.ss advisor for three years. Through your careful attention and guidance our tasks became ea,sier. Your patience in all situations taught us a great deal. When we were troubled, your .sense of humor and optimi.sm guided us. Our dances, activities, class meeting.s, and prom were all enjoyable because of your help. You have been more than just a teacher and class advi.sor — you have been a true friend. For this, Mr. Najjar, we thank you, and in appreciation we dedicate our yearbook to you. 4 To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. and a time to die; A time to be born, ■ff ' -SsS? a time to laugh. The first weeks were hectic as we heard campaign speeches and finally elected class officers. President Bruce McGarry, Vice-President Cindy Wilson, Secretary Mary Mullin, and Treasurer Barb Zancewicz promised to get us started on the road to graduation. Mr. Mattioli began his last year as our principal at Maynard High School. We were officially welcomed to the High School by the Senior Class at the “Welcome Freshman” Dance. The girls were initiated into the J.W.C. and many attended their first semi-formal. The year went by all too quickly and we soon realized we had only three years left. As sophomores, we were no longer the lowest under- classmen. Mr. DeRosa was appointed acting principal and things ran smoothly. Alan Cunn took over as our Vice- President. We surprised the entire school by beating the Seniors at sectional cheering and many of them never talked to us again. The Tigresses, our girls’ basketball team, were champs in the Midland League and Central Mass. Conference. The big excitement came in the spring when we ordered our class rings. The echos of “What color did you get?” could be heard throughout the building. Our demonstrations for Mr. DeRosa as principal did no good, and as we became Juniors, Mr. Kingsbury took over the administration. Jay Manning was elected our new class president. The big event was the Prom and all dis- cussions focused around a theme. “Grecian Gardens” appeared on May 16 and an unforgettable night was the result. The Girls’ Basketball Team had another fantastic season with a record of sixteen wins and no losses. They were invited to participate in the Billerica Memorial Tour- nament, but after advancing to the semi-finals were de- feated by Arlington. Arlington went on to win the tour- nament. Track was on the rise as a major sport and Doug Cush emerged as one of the best medium distance runners in Eastern Massachusetts. In all the confusion of administra- tive shake-ups, we still managed a rather successful and memorable year. Finally, the big day arrived. We became Seniors. In a way it was sad because we realized this was our last year at Maynard High School. Mr. Abbott became our new principal and the atmosphere changed quickly. We as- siuned more responsibilities, but the rewards have been much greater. We were finally allowed to use the court- yard and during studies, most of the Seniors could be found outside. Class pictures were exchanged and work began on the 1969 Screech Owl. College applications were filled out and we were fitted for caps and gowns. The football coaches managed to put it all together for the 1968 season and Maynard High School emerged with a fine 7-2 record. This was the year of the Tiger! Led by our fine quarter- back, Frank Smart, the Tigers swamped most of their opponents and only a first game loss to Milford kept them from capturing the Midland League crown. Many of our seniors were honored for their great season by being named to the League’s All-Star Team. Graduation finally became a reality as plans were made for the Senior Class Outing and many of our other Senior year activities. We regret- fully left Maynard High School knowing that our four years had been very successful and would not easily be topped by any other class in the future. 45 Remember . . . The Sugar Shack? Monsen, R. Lent, M. Dooley, A. Rogers, W. Murphy. Cross Country is a fairly new sport in Maynard but it seems to have caught on fast. Captain Robb Audette led the way as Maynard met some of the strongest teams in the area. Backing up Robb in this rugged sport were underclassmen Mike Zancewicz, John Shostak, and Ben Taylo r. Fine performances by Freshmen Keith and Erik Monsen seem to indicate that Cross Country will finally make it big at MHS. The coaching of Jim Owens has turned Cross Cormtry into a successful sport and it looks like many more good seasons for the team under his direction. 79 Captain Robb Audette with Coach Jim Owens Track Row 1: V, Catania, J.
