SCREECH OWL MAYNARD PUBLIC LIBRARY 3 5957 00046 5 47 ... « SCREECH OWL 1968 Maynard High School Maynard, Massachusetts Foreword For twelve years we have traveled along a road which has led to knowledge, friendships, activities, and fun. This book will in future years bring back to our minds all the good times and the old friends we had. It will help us to remember the teachers and counsel- ors who guided us down this road. And now, as we approach the next intersection, we must make deci- sions for ourselves as to which road we shall follow as we continue life’s uncertain journey. We have had a good preparation. Let us hope we make the right decisions. 2 Contents Page Foreword 2 Commemoration 4 Administration 6 Faculty 9 Graduating Seniors 21 History of Class of 1968 52 Underclassmen 59 Activities 67 Patrons 92 Advertising 93 3 Commemoration We, the class of 1968, present this yearbook in commemoration of Rebecca Anne McDowell. BECKY . . . Class treasurer . . . classmate . . . athlete . . . friend Quiet . . . helpful . . . happy . . . reserved Energetic . . . enthusiastic . . . sincere Becky had a shy and quiet smile, unpretentious, yet friendly. She was unno- ticeable in a rushing crowd, yet now that she’s gone, her presence is missed, and all who knew her feel the emptiness she has left behind. Her “Hey! Got your dues?” and soft, sincere “Hi” as she passed through the corridors with a slight tilt of her head, gentle bounce of blonde hair, and slow smile were familiar to all of us. We, the class of 1968, shall always remember Becky as a part of our life at Maynard High School. 4 REBECCA ANNE McDOWELL November 6, 1950— December 20, 1967 “Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost. With this in mind, the English De- partment valiantly attempts to cover the gamut of literature from the ancient world to the twentieth century, dipping liberally into Shakespeare’s works along the way. In its consideration of gram- mar, usage, and composition, it ranges from the squelching of “ain’t” to the avoidance of “squinting modifiers.” ALICE MULLIN also teaches in the English Department. Comfortable, girls? Class History 1967-1968 LIBERTY OF THOUGHT IS THE LIFE OF THE SOUL Oeptember, 1964, marked the beginning of the class of ’68’s high school years. We never made it to the old high school on Summer Street but entered the sparkling nev Maynard High School on Great Road, the first class scheduled to complete four years in the ne w location. It was a break for us because, as freshmen, we were no more confused than any other class. Our Song: “You’ll Never Walk Alone’’ Flower; White Rose Gift: Tree In our sophomore year, after much confusion, we had a winner in the November float parade, “The Guillotine.’’ This year we or- dered our class rings, making the big decisions about stone col- ors. The “Mod” look appeared, and along with it progressively shorter skirts for girls and longer hair for boys. But the last two weren’t really meant to be part of the “M.H.S. look.” Would you believe— that Batman made his T.V. debut dancing the frug this year? Junior year was memorable and exciting. After a long wait we received our class rings. Most of the class made the U.N. trip. Our Prom Blue Hawaii was a major production. Mr. DeRosa was Acting Principal, and we loved him. The Girls’ Basketball team was champion of its league. And at the end of the year, when the seniors left early, we were top dogs. We had finally reached seniority! In September, 1967, we returned to our familiar institution of learning for our last high school year. Mr. Kingsbury had been appointed principal. In December the rallying cry was “Can I have a picture?” as the big exchange of wallet-size photos got un- derway. Class colors . . . Caps and gowns . . . College applica- tions . . . College Boards . . . Job interviews ... all consumed our interests. And yes, this year we finally got THE SENIOR PRIVILEGES??? 49 Senior Directory Bonnie Alexander 5 Elm Court Dance Committee 1 2 3 4, Drama Club 4. Advisor Director Producer Property Manager Set Designer Make-up man MR. DAVID EMERSON Students with an interest in acting find the Drama Club an excellent outlet for their talents. Many also enjoy working backstage. Several members rehearsed for months to prepare for GEROGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE presented February 26 and 27. Most of the cast members have performed on the M.H.S. stage before. Could it be they’re hoping to be “discovered”??? At the time the SCREECH OWL went to press there were also hopes of doing a faculty-student play entitled ARE TEACHERS HUMAN? Rehearsal scenes from GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE. The French Club (jives pleasant opportunities to those wishing to delve more into the French language and culture. Among activities the most popular is the yearly trip to a French restaurant. Mil Maynard schools participate in the F.T.A. pro- gram designed to show student members at first hand what teaching is all about. It gives the opportu- nity to do what the average teacher does— correct pa- pers, prepare lessons, and, of course, teach. Future Teachers Of America 69 Junior Woman’s Club The main purpose of the Junior Woman’s Club is to develop a social and cultural interest in society and to aid in community service and charity. During the year M.H.S. members ot the J.W.C. served as volun- teers tor the Cancer Drive and tor the Friendly Aid Service in Concord. Social activities ot this year included the gala initia- tion of new members, a trip to Tuft’s university Theatre, a semi-tormal dance in December, and a banquet in the Spring. Mrs. Clair, Adviser. OFFICERS and PROGRAM COMMITTEE I he Chess Club was an inspired innovation at M.FI.S. in the tall ot 1967, with Mrs. Clark and acting student director David Faldasz as organizers. This in- tellectual hobby caught on fast with many students, and three teachers, Mr. Lewis, Mr. McGuire, and Mr. Najjar were just as fast in volunteering as advisers. Chess Club Interested seniors watch a crucial match between David Faldasz and Daniel Norman. Library Club members assist Mrs. Clark by checking out books, cataloguing, preparing window displays, and doing other small tasks. Through practice they become ac- quainted with how a library runs and how to put its resources to the best use. Math League members have a special interest and understanding of math and com- pete with other high school students in the area in solving mathematical problems. The big hope is to amass the most points. In 1967-’68 M.H.S. scored higher than in any previous year. Mr. Najjar is the faculty adviser.
