MAYNARD PUBLIC LIBRARY , ,,1 J ' . - ■ ' sCHsech OWE, 1967 Maynard High School Maynard, Massachusetts Foreword The past is prologue to the future. In these pages we have gathered in pictures and words our recollections of days and years at Maynard High School. For the Class of 1967 may these memories of earlier years in- spire a bright future. Contents Page Foreword 2 Commemoration 4 Faculty and Administration 6 Graduating Seniors I 5 History of Class of 1967 45 Underclassmen 57 Activities 65 Patrons 90 Advertising 9 1 3 Commemoration We the Class of 1967 present this yearbook in commemoration of Richard Walter Johansen. Richard. Yo-Ho or Rick to most of us, had a special kind of personality, quiet at times, but at other times as loud as thunder. His enthusiasm for Jimmy Brown. Bob- by Hull, and hot rods was contagious. He liked the outdoors— hunting, fishing, and shooting. Football, baseball, and hockey were his favorite sports. He gave his best to all. We shall never forget Richard’s familiar back-slapping or his loud yell, Hey, wait up! It ' s the everyday things about Rick that we will remember most. 4 RICHARD WALTER JOHANSEN Let the Scroll Fill as it may as years unroll; But when again she calls her youth To serve her in the ranks of truth. May she find all one heart, one soul— At home or on some distant shore— All present, or accounted for!” 5 ALBERT LERER Superintendent DiRAN R. We attended our first high school dance (the traditional Welcome Freshman Dance,” sponsored by the Seniors), elected our class officers: President, Gerry Kane; Vice-President, Nancy Jarvinen: Secretary, Linda Tervo: Treasurer, Frank Rizzo, and established ourselves officially as the class of ’67. Class Ring vs. School Ring” was the major political is- sue in school at the time, but a world event far more startling was the assassination of President Kennedy. Later that year the Beatles revolutionized the music in- dustry. Our Sophomore year, l964-’65, was full of good things. We entered a new building, sampled cafeteria food for the first time, and our float won first prize at the rally. This was a presidential election year and as President Johnson took office to guide the country while we were in high school, so did President Frank Rizzo, Vice-President Rosemary Buscemi, Secretary Mary Ann Colombo, and Treasurer Anna Marie Buscemi take office until graduation. This year, too, brought the Man front U.J .CX.S.” “Qcldfingcr . 46 As Juniors we settled down to the routine so familiar to us from two years’ experience. This year set a precedent in that shop classes were offered to girls for the first time. We received the school rings we had ordered in our Sophomore year. Near the end of Octo- ber we left the school at the early hour of 6:30 A.M. and travelled to New York City to visit the United Na- tions. A second precedent was set when our school put on Bye Bye Birdie, the first musical comedy at Maynard High. In the T.V. world there was the appearance of Batman, the caped crusader, and i et Smart with Would you believe . . This was the year of the Black-Out, Granny Gowns, mod-print suits, and textured stockings were the rage along with long straight hair for boys (but not in school) and girls. The waistband dropped and the hemline rose to make mini-skirts and hip- huggers. In May our hard work was crystallized into one of the prettiest proms the school has ever had— Moonlit Gardens.” In September, 1966, we returned to school for the last time. We were finally Seniors. In early September we gave the traditional Welcome Freshmen Dance ” We received our Senior pictures and the school buzzed with whispers of, Do you have your pictures?”, Can I see your pictures? . The yearbook staff was busy on the Screech Owl. Near the end of October the English classes went to see Mantlet at Natick High School. Being measured tor our caps and gowns struck a note of sadness. On January 13. Maynard High School was represented on the WHDH T.V. show Jt ' s Academic. This last year was one of college and job applications and interviews, of plans and hopes for the future. Staging an annual play is the main activity of the Dramatics Club. Members gain confidence in performing before an audience and increase their knowledge of the world of the theatre through actual experience. Re- hearsals got under way in February for a spring presentation of the three-act comedy J Miijority of One on April I 3 and 14, 1967. 68 The French Club Designed to stimulate the appreciation of the French language and French culture, the major activities of the club include sponsorship of French films and an annual trip to a French restaurant. As members of the F.T.A., students interested in educa- tion as a career are enabled to explore the various realms of teaching through lectures, direct observation, and the opportunity to do some practice teaching un- der the supervision of teachers in the Maynard schools. Future Teachers of America 69 Junior Women’s Club Any high school girl willing to submit to a rigorous initiation is eligible for the Junior Women’s Club. To achieve their objectives of charitable, cultural, intellectual, and social advancement, members participate in the Cancer Drive, attend lectures and plays, and plan a semi-formal dance at Christmas time and a banquet in May. Officers and Program Committee The Library Club 1 Members of the Library Club work as assistants to the school librarian by checking books in and out, cata- loguing, and helping other students during library peri- ods. Through actual practice under the supervision of Librarian Mrs. Sylvia Clark, club members become ac- quainted with the complexities of a modern library and learn to utilize its resources efficiently. Library Aide on duty Math League Once each month members of the Math League match wits with members of eleven other high school teams. Open to any student with mathematical ability, the Math League stimulates interest in mathematics, strengthens abilities, and exposes students to keen competition. Mr. Kenneth Najjar is the faculty advisor of the club. Music Rehearsal in the Music Room Maynard High School’s music department, under the di- rection of Mr. Charles Garabedian, offers a variety of musical activities which give interested and capable in- strumentalists and vocalists the opportunity to perform in a group. For a vocalist there are the Boys’ and Girls’ Glee Clubs and the A Cappella Choir-, for the instrumentalist, the Dance Band. High School Band, the Brass Choir, and Orchestra. In addition, there are the Majorettes, baton twirlers who perform separately and as part of the march- ing band. These organizations perform twice a year— at the Christ- mas and Spring concerts. There is also an annual ex- change concert with another town or a concert tour. It is the aim of all of the musical groups to develop a deep- er appreciation for music as a fine art and to give prac- tice in the performance of music. Initiated in the late I920’s as a quarterly paperback, the SCREECH OWL contained no pictures until 1932 when pictures of the graduating class were included in the final issue of the year. In the mid I950’s the SCREECH OWL became a yearly publication, but not until 1964 was it bound in a hard cover thereby joining the ranks of typical high school yearbooks. Work began on the 1967 edition of the SCREECH OWL in the summer of I 966 when Mary Ann Colombo, Se- nior Staff editor, regularly held meetings of her staff to work on the senior write-ups and the Remember Whens”. This work, along with the compilation of infor- mation for the senior directory, continued well into the fall of 1966. During the summer, Susan Tucker set up a schedule for senior portrait sittings, and by the time school opened, almost all seniors had been photo- graphed. Early in September, the Business Staff, headed by Wes- ley Hirons and under the direction of Miss Dorothy O’Malley, started its solicitation of advertisments. So successful was this campaign that the size of the book had to be increased from one hundred and twenty-eight to one hundred and forty pages. While the Business Staff was gathering advertisements, Editor-in-Chief Sherry Mayes was occupied with gath- ering hundreds of photographs for possible use on the yearbook pages. Photographers were frequently on the M. H. S. scene snapping candids of students and facul- ty as well as group pictures of various organizations and activities. Once the photographs were printed, the editorial and lay-out staffs, working with advisor Betty R. Hill, began selecting material and preparing it for publication. Meeting the publishing company’s deadlines meant ceaseless work and called for work on Saturdays, nights, and during vacations. A dedicated few re- sponded. We gratefully acknowledge the special assis- tance of Lay-out editor Linda Lankiewicz, Debbie Lee French, Brian Campbell, Rosemary Buscemi, Stephanie Gramolini, Wesley Hirons, anc Rostic Zerchykov. The staff of the 1967 SCREECH OWL extends its grati- tude to the patrons listed on the following page. It also extends its appreciation to Purdy of Boston for the fulfillment of our picture requirements and to Mr. Rich- ard Weir, representative of the American Yearbook Publishing Company, for his courtesy and efficiency in helping us produce this book. Editors and Assistants In Memoriam To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go. To right the unrightable wrong, to love pure and chaste from afar. To try when your arms are too weary, to reach the unreachable star! FERDIANO D. MATTIOLI Principal, Maynard High School 1955-1967 This is my quest, to follow that star. No matter how hopeless, no matter how far; To fight for the right without question or pause. To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause! And I know, if I’ll only be true To this glorious quest, that my heart will lie peaceful and calm. When I ' m laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this; That one man, scorned and covered with scars. Still strove with his last ounce of courage. To reach the unreachable stars. 90 Patrons Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Agin Andy Ann Anna Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Arcieri Bill and Dottie Billy and Mary Ann Ruth Bunker Mr. and Mrs. Stewart T.
