Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1966 volume:

SCREECH OWL 1966 MAYNARD HIGH SCHOOL MAYNARD, MASSACHUSETTS Long after we have left school, we will look back upon our years at Maynard High as the special days when we grew, and lived, and learned. The Screech Owl will provide the passage to the land of memories, both important and ob- scure. This yearbook will serve to remind us what Maynard High School has meant to those who know it best, to those who give it the breath of life: the students. We will remember Maynard High School as a truly unique place . . . It’s Trr and KCIO3 , Return of the Native and Quasi Contracts. It’s cafeteria dances and library passes. Locker breaks and lunch lines. It’s the Guidance Office and the Courtyard. It’s whistle sprints and “Go Gutsos’’. 2 It’s work and preparation, i i I 4 It’s being alone or lost in a crowd. It’s the 2:25 announcements and “Got your class dues?’’ 5 It’s swapping class pictures and choosing class colors, “What’s for lunch’’ and “See you down Tut’s’’. It’s a memory, A hope, 8 9 IN APPRECIATION After twenty-three years of loyal and diligent service, Mrs. Margaret Ayotte has retired as office secretary. During her years as secretary at Maynard High School, Mrs. Ayotte worked for four principals: Leo F. Mullin, Bernard T. White, Albert Lerer, and Frediano Mattioli. She has seen the position of Superintendent of Schools held by three people: Donald Lent, Mary Doyle, and Albert Lerer. Mrs. Ayotte’s duties as secre- tary have been many and varied. She has kept the registers and class accounts, handled transcripts, and taken telephone calls. Because of her extensive responsibilities in the principal’s office, Mrs. Ayotte calls herself jack of all trades and master of none. Mrs. Ayotte especially likes the students of Maynard High School, and in her many years with the school system, she has always won the respect and friend- ship of all who have come into contact with her. It will be quite a while before the students and fac- ulty alike get out of the habit of looking for the smile and cheery “hello of Mrs. Ayotte as they pass the office door. To show our appreciation for the years of work and friendship of Mrs. Ayotte, The Class of 1966 sets aside this page in our yearbook to honor the wonderful woman we will never forget. DEDICATION The Class of 1966 has chosen to dedicate this Screech Owl to Mr. Frediano D. Mattioli, our principal. Mr. Mattioli majored in mathematics at Boston College, from which he graduated in 1942, and received his Masters Degree in Education Administration from Boston University in 1951. He has also taken courses at Harvard College and M.l.T. Mr. Mattioli came to Maynard High School as a teacher of mathematics in 1946. During his nine years on the faculty, Mr. Mattioli was advisor to the Dramatics Club, coach of the golf team, and faculty manager of athletics. In 1955 Mr. Mattioli assumed his present position as Principal of Maynard High School. Mr. Mattioli believes that today’s teenagers are as good as they ever were, and sees each graduating class a better prepared group of young adults. He has confidence in their capability to meet the challenges and pressures of the modern world. Our principal’s philosophy on life is one which reflects his un- selfish dedication to his profession. Mr. Mattioli believes that one should strive to leave the world in a better situation than which he found it, and that man’s success in life is determined by what he has given of himself. The Class of 1966 wishes to express its appreciation for the encouragement, trust, and inspiration which Mr. Mattioli has given it. A perceptive and kind, respected and devoted principal; to such a man we dedicate our yearbook. FREDIANO D. MATTIOLI Principal WILFRED DeROSA Vice Principal 12 FACULTY GEORGE B. ALFKE, JR. Maynard High School was host to Student Council members representing approxi- mately fifty-seven schools. Ideas and programs were exchanged as the students formed ten discussion groups, and later reassembled to hear the dynamic Dr. Hsieh. Dr. Hsieh, an honorary Chaplain of Curry College and a member of the Chinese Philanthropic Service, served as the ambassador to six countries, repre- senting the Republic of China. Dr. Hsieh holds twenty- six degrees and has been ordained a minister and appointed a judge. November 20, 1965 will always be recalled as a stim- ulating experience, both intellectually and socially, by the participants of the Student Council Convention. MUSIC FESTIVAL: Maynard was honored to be the town in which the Northeastern Massachusetts Music Festival was held on May 15, 1965. It was a clear bright day as the participating schools filled the audi- torium and halls with the sounds of their music. The parade through downtown Maynard, the mass band concert at Alumni Field, and the auditioning of cho- ruses and glee clubs was the culmination. The Festival is looked upon as a friendly, co-operative musical experience proving that music really is the universal language. 24 Dr. Hsieh GIRL’S GLEE CLUB: FIRST ROW: R. McDowell, R. Buscemi, P. As times and tastes have changed, so has the Screech Owl. In the late 1920’s, the Screech Owl was a quarterly publication. The issues were paperback, and contained no photography. The final edition of the year was devoted to the Seniors, and consisted of student com- positions, jokes, French short stories, and a random notes column under the heading of “Wise Old Owl.” In 1932 pictures of the graduating class were included in the final issue of the year. Twelve senior pictures on a page was not unusual. In the 1940 ' s, the average Screech Owl was forty-five pages in length. More pic- tures were being added to the publications, but the bulk of the Screech Owl was still writings and editorial-like comments on the current events at school. It was not until the mid-1950’s that the winter edition was cancelled, and the Screech Owl became a yearly publication. The pictures were more numerous and of better quality, but free-hand drawings still served to di- vide sections and to develop the theme of the book Since 1964, the American Publishing Company has pub- lished the Maynard High School yearbook. Preparation for the 1966 Screech Owl was begun a year before it was delivered to its readers. The Staff met to decide upon such issues as cover design, theme, and layout. The 1966 Screech Owl is new in its perspective; the simplicity of arrangement and style, the texture of the paper, and the type print were chosen to appeal to the modern reader. Professional photography and publishing, and months of diligent creativity by the yearbook staff have made this 1966 Screech Owl a vivid portrayal of the way of life at Maynard High School.
