' ' Mr. Smith is a splendid teacher, a faithful friend, and one who gives liberally of his time and talents. During our freshman and junior years, with you as our adviser, our every pro- ject was profitable. Words cannot express our gratitude, for your kindness and untiring efforts toward reaching our goals. May this dedication Mr. Smith, tend to compensate you in some small measure, for your patience and per- serverance through the school years. GRATITUDE The Seniors of 1959 wish to express our gratitude to Mrs. Hilbring, our English teacher during our Junior year. Her unprejudiced mind and untiring efforts did much to forward our progress in our Junior year. We shall always appreciate the inspiration ,gained from our association with her. To have had her as a teacher and a friend is something we shall always remember. 2 Mrs. Wallin Mr. Crandell Mr. Brown THE FUTURE -- 3840, 000 ANSWER TO MAYFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 'PUPIL BOOM' 16 Classrooms and a CAFETORlUM Feature Modernistic Building Mr. Niles Mrs. Naylor On December 10, 1957, the voters approved the proposition for a new school which we hope will be ready in the fall of 1959. The new institution will contain sixteen classrooms, including four kindergartens and three classrooms for each of Grades 1,2,3, and 4. ln addition a cafetorium will combine an auditorium and a cafeteria. Other rooms include a gym, health rooms, offices, kitchen, janitor's storage, boiler room, and teachers' quarters. Some four hundred fifty pupils from kindergarten to fourth grade will attend the new school. The faculty and staff will number seventeen. There are at present forty-five teachers and staff members in the Mayfield Central School with James W. Smithers as Supervising Principal. The present school, now bursting with all grades, will remain in use for students of grades five, six, junior and senior high, or grades five through twelve. The Mayfield Central District e mb ra c e s an ar e a bounded on the north by Sw'eet's Crossing, on the south by the town of Progress, on the west by Easterly and Phelps Street, and on the east by the Kennyetto Creek. One of the important features of the new building will be that the central core will be sufficient for future expansion. The enrollment of the present school is one thousand pupils with an anticipated increase up to one thousand two hundred andfiftyby 1965. During the past few years the enrollment has increased steadily at an average rate of forty per year. The district operates seven buses, all of which makes two trips both morning and afternoon. The busses travel three hundred miles a day and transport eight hundred and forty children both in the morning and afternoon. 1 1 X 1 w 1 1 I W MRS. BESSIE D. WALLIN District Superintendent B. S. PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED IN DETERMINING SENIOR PRIZE WINNERS To be eligible for any prize a candidate must have been enrolled in this school during the first semester of his Junior year and have attended from then until grad- uation. Valedictorian and Salutatorian averages are figured through three and three quarters years. All subject prizes cover four years. VALEDICTORIAN, SALUTATORIAN: The weighted average as follows: Four Units of English, four units of Citizenship Education, General Science and either Health or Biology must be used by everyone. For the remainder of the subjects, the candidate must claim enough to make 16 or more units. Band and Choir grades will be disregarded. Regents or School final grades may be used except that Regents grades must be used for English Three Years, World History and for subjects in the major field in which Regents are given. Subjects claimed as 'major must be included. ENGLISH - The average of the final grades in English I, II, IV and English Three Years' Regents. SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, FRENCH, HOMEMAKING, INDUSTRIAL ARTS AND BUSINESS - In any of these fields any subjects required for a state diploma and a major must be used plus two more subjects. Regents marks must be used in all subjects in which Regents examinations are given. OUTSTANDING SENIOR - Outstanding Senior selection is made by a committee of the Secondary Faculty. They consider such factors as leadership, citizenship, cooperation, the ability to get along with others, and scholastic average. ATHLETICS - This selection is more or less a subjective one as there are too few factors to be weighed objectively. A candidate must have earned five letters to be eligible. MUSIC - This selection will be made by the Music Instructor or Instructors. The requirements are: A member of the band and choir, plus outstanding ability which has been proven by participation in ope-rettas, concerts and competition. 8 CO LD N 1-I I LD CVD N v-I -I-I H U 43 C0 OO N v-I I C 9 C51 I-4 W I IP -C1 E A 51 ZH 5 I-I I C C 1958 - 1959 oo L9 N 1-I I LO '-T! SEE Us AS NVE REALLY ARE. CLASS PROPHECY Here it is 1969 and it is the class of 1959's reunion, Everyone isn't here. As at most parties or get togethers, the people are in groups. At the far side of the room there are a few people talking about world affairs. Pat Smullen who is not married yet, and is now the head of the Kitchen Krew of our Alma Mater, is talking to Ed Naylor, a noted statesman from Alaska. Bob Castiglione, who is, or was, a famous scientist, is circling in orbit in his famous space ship. We hope he still is anyway. We haven't seen him since graduation. Gary Carpenter, a leading Hollywood actor is talking to Carol Warner a society leader, about the upper crust of gossip. Sue Jennings, a teacher and wife, is talking to Penny Downs who is a ballet dancer, and hasn't changed a bit since her high school days. Ed Maxson is still driving the bomb although he now drives at Indianapolis with one arm left to go. Tom Blowers, a leading playboy, is discussing our trip to Mars with Maynard Whitman, his chauffeur. Maryann Button, a nurse and traveling companion to Rebecca Strobeck, a hypo- chondriac, and Phyllis Yorks, her Wall Street partner who are financial geniuses, are discussing sickness with Kathy Gray, the manager of Band Aid and Patches Corporation. Marge Ambrosino and Cecilia Warner are the new owners of the former Helen's Lunch Room in Gloversville with Audrey Scott and Carol Nellis as waitresses there. Wayne Marcellus, a policeman and George Seeley a taxidermist, are frequent visitors at the new ownership in Gloversville. Ed Lent is seated by Marion Surdam. Ed told me that he is a coach for a Midget Women's League now. Marion looks very nice. She was Miss America of 1960 who changed quite a lot since her high school days. Donna Dingman, a grease monkey and mechanic, is talking abou the new trend in automobiles to Guy Farrington who is now doing commercials for T.V. such as Mapo advertisements. Sylvia Whitman, a maid to Jackie Parker, who is a model of gym clothes, is seated by Lynn Washburn, a now famous dog trainer. On the other side of the room the talk seems to be louder. In the lounge, Shirley Abel, the manager of a Candy Shoppe Chain, is engaged in a heated conversation with Fay Crossley who is now the new Sgt. Preston of the Yukon on Channel 10. Carol Johnson, a baby bottle tester, is dancing by herself with a hula hoop. Another couple on the floor is Sara Ruliffson, a waitress at that famous restaurant, Lee's, with her husband Richie Getman who is a check-out boy at A 81 P. That was a surprise marriagelll! In another mass, Barb Perkins, the queen of the Beat Generation, is talking to Bev Perry, a progressive jazz singer, and Edie Rutkowski, the star and editor of SHOCK MAGAZINE, Also in the discussion is Karrolle Pilchen, a slinky, night club singer-dancer. Finally, last but not least, sits David Bloom, Esquire. He is by himself, but not alone. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leader- ship and to encourage the development of character in students of Mayfield Central School. Students who are elected to this organization have received the highest honor that a high school can bestow on them. THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY IMPROVES SCHOLARSHIP AND THE STUDENT COUNCIL IMPROVES SCHOOL GOVERNMENT. The Student Council is an organization to which students are selected by popular student vote. It is an honor to be well thought of by one's fellow students and to be entrusted with decisions which affect student life and school policies. There is keen competition for membership in this group. The varsity basketball team had a rather rough season winning eight and losing nine. However, the team for the season, outscored their opponents 872 - 863, which shows them somewhat better than other records would classify them. We hope for better things from the '58 - '59 squad which has, as we go to press, a five - one record. i VARSITY HAS EXCITING SEASON The J-V squad had a very successful season showing a fourteen and three I record. They won the league championship for the first time in several years. We are happy that Mr. Walker could start with a winning outfit. ROW ONE: E. Beard, Manager, D. Whitehouse. ROW TWO: J. MAYFIELD WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The Panthers got off to a slow start in breaking even in their first six league starts. After that, the pitchers settled down and the hitters did some timely hitting to win the last six games in a row for a nine - three League record. Ed Banker came through with some good pitching in the stretch drive. Jones, Rumrill and Getrnan also had wins. Getman pitched a no - hit game against Galway in his only appearance. Jim Wilkins, Bob Boduch, Mike Gifford and Den Jones did most of the im- portant hitting during the season. CHAMPS AND CHEERS BRING VICTORY The Cheerleaders work hard to stir up enthusiasm and school spirit for the hard working athletic teams. It makes the boys feel that they are getting solid backing from the student body. R. Hayes, D. Musgrave, C. Warner, B. Hinds, P. Perkins, D. Dingman. ROW ONE: W. Vomaska. ROW TWO: R, Boduch, R. MANY CLOSE DECISIONS MAKE AN INTERESTING SEASON The Mayfield booters ended the season with an overall record of seven wins four losses and two ties. Six of the wins and two ties gave the Panthers a total of fourteen points in the league standing which put them in a two way tie with Wells for third place. Mayfield shot sixty-four into the nets while allowing only thirty-one points to get by them by their opponents. Ed Lent lead all scorers with a total of thirty- one points scored on fifteen goals and one penalty kick, GOOD SPORTS AND HARD WORKERS KEEP MORALE HIGH The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders promote interest at athletic contests.
