Mr. Wright was our advisor in our Junior year. His untiring patience helped us when the going got rough. This year as Guidance Counselor, Mr. Wright has shown his eagemess to assist students in planning for their future. Thank you, Mr. Wright, for all your help to usl The Senior Class Gratitude for Years of Outstanding Service I to Mayfield Central School The year'1956-'57 marked the end :of a memorable career for Mrs. ,Alice Thomas. We were sad to see her retire but we realized she had earned a well deserved vacation from teaching Iunior and Senior High Math and Iunior High Science. Mrs. Thomas obtained her A. B. Degree at Albany and then took additional courses from Cornell, Oneonta, Syracuse, and even from the University of Colorado. Most of her teaching was done at Mayfield and all who have worked here have found her devoted to education in general and especlallyeto the students of M. C. S. l Our best wishes go to Mrs. Thomas in her retirement and hope she has many years of rest, relaxation, and enjoyment. . S., , it 335 Y, K -,.,,,.h, Ag , S840,000 Mayfield School Will Seat 450 Students The Mayfield Central School district was organized in 1937. For the first two years the children attended the Village grammar school built in 1892. In 1939 the new Central building opened and nine rural schools gradually closed. With the end of World War II, enrollment began to increase rapidly. Class size reached 45 or more pupils and in 1948 annexes were needed. In 1949 a bond issue was passed for S3 00,000 for an addition and alterations providing 10 new classrooms. This was completed in 1951. All rooms were immediately occupied. In the fall'of 1953 it was found necessary to add a first grade section and the next year a third, first and second grade section, and the crowding continued with no sign of a letup. At first, with the addition of grade sections, the secondary section was squeezed until it expanded into two basement storerooms. The pressure of increased enrollment continued. The School Board wrestled with the problem and finally concluded there was need for a new elementary building. In December, 1956, the Board submitted a site but the taxpayers defeated it. A Citizens Research Committee was formed, comprising persons appointed by various civic organizations and others named on a geographical basis by the Board. This committee selected the West-Warner site on North Main St. , and it was approved by voters in June. Through the fall months the committee and Board studied preliminary plans submitted by the school architect, Milton Crandell of Glens Falls. On December 10, 1957 the voters approved the proposition for the new school whichwill be ready in the fall of 1959. The new institution will contain 16 classrooms , including four kindergartens and three classrooms for each of Grades l,2,3, and 4. In addition a cafetorium will combine an audi- torium and a cafeteria. Other rooms include a gym, health rooms, offices , kitchen, janitor's storage, boiler room, and teachers' quarters. The voters will pay off the loan over a thirty year period. The residents will pay S41l,600 and the state S4Z8,400. The state aid formula and equalization rates, assuming that they stay the same, will necessitate a tax rate increase of 40 per cent with the 1959-'60 tax per thousand being levied in Mayfield at S34. 20, in Iohnstown at S29. 70, in Northampton at S43. 70 and in Broadalbln at S45. 40. Some 450 pupils from kindergarten to fourth grade will attend the new school. The faculty and staff will number 17. There are at present 43 teachers and staff members in the Mayfield Central School with James W. Smithers as Supervising Principal. ' The present school, now bursting with all grades, will remain in use for students of grades five, six, junior and senior high, or grades 5 through 12. The Mayfield Central District embraces an area bounded on the north by Sweet's Crossing, on the south by the town of Progress, on the west by Easterly and Phelps Street, and on the east by the Kennetto Creek. One of the important features of the new building will be that the central core will be sufficient for future expansion. The enrollment of the present school is 940 pupils with an anticipated increase up to 1,200 by 1965. During the past few years the enrollment has in- creased steadily at an average rate of 40 per year. The district operates seven buses all of which makes two trips both morning and afternoon. The buses travel 300 miles a day and transport 800 children both in the morning and afternoon. The December 10, 1957 vote has been interpreted as proving that the citizens of the Mayfield Central School District have the interests of their children at heart and once offered wide representation on fact-finding committees they were not reluctant to assume tax burdens to educate their children in proper surroundings. The vote of 406 to 191 proved that the resi- dents are backing the program with confidence. ff' I 5 Wg., 11'- 'S E. .iz 'M ,W F? wg. 7 .,-- :A + ' S Q HN. 3 5 , 2532? in g? if ,VE dsl' IW L . - Jw ' Administrative Staff MRS. Northville followed suit by winning a two point victory. The excellently played playoff game gave Mayfield the Tri-County championship for the fourth straight time. In Mayfield s nineteen year history, Babe Baldwin has been its most outstanding athlete. During hislhigh school career, Mayfield won nine of a possible twelve Tri-County League championships , four Section II championships in soccer and one in basketball. In Babe's senior year in soccer he scored 53 of 89 points that the team compiled for the season. In basketball he averaged 34. 5 points per game. In one game he scored 61 establish- ing a new Tri-County league record which he had previously set with 54 points in his sophomore year. In his final baseball season at Mayfield he had a . 523 batting average and a 5-I record in pitching. His outstanding ability was really in evidence when Mayfield beat Wells for the championship. He pitched a two-hitter, slammed three doubles, scored both runs, and struck out fourteen getting three of them in the last inning. Mayfield Central has had its good athletes but Babe's all around feats have overshadowed all others. We know that records are made to be broken but we feel that his records will stand for a long time. Congratulations are certainly due Mr. Boshart and Mr. Parker for helping to develop this fine athlete. An Exciting Soccer Season FRONT ROW: COACH PARKER, Captain Mike Gifford. SECOND ROW: R. Mayfield loses Soccer Championship for the first time in six ears. 7' Although Mayfield had a 5-5-3 won-lost-tie record this year in its complete season and a 5-4-3 record in the league, it showed great team spirit all the way. Asian Flu was an op- ponent as well as the other teams. Also, we lost the services of five starters through gradu- ation last June. But the hold overs and the newcomers practiced and played hard always giving their opponents something to remember with their fine aggressive team play. Next year's squad should be stronger even though some good men will graduate in June. As mentioned earlier in the PANTHER OF 1958, 800 of the 940 students who attend Mayfield Central ride to and from' school on our buses. This helps to give the reader an idea of how im- portant the drivers are. Since the school opened in 1939 there has never been a fatal accident and the few mishaps that have occurred have been of a minor nature. Our drivers deserve a great deal of credit for this record. We, the Class of 1958, are taking this opportunity to say, thanks , careful drivers. We hope you will continue to keep up the good work. Also, a great deal of credit is due our custodians who keep our building clean, the snow shoveled, and do numerous errands. The more we grow the more their duties increase. We in- deed appreciate their thoroughness anci attention to their daily tasks. The yearbook is not an easy proposition to complete and much time has been spent in preparing material for the printer. From time to time we have had to impose on the good will of the teachers by interrupting their classes for photography, questions, and taking students out of their classes for other reasons. It is difficult to register a clear idea of all that goes into this student publi- cation. The class each year isinew to the job and a great deal of time is consumed before much is accomplished. But, like other senior classes, we finally got it done and we hope that we have provided you with a worthwhile publication. We wish the best of luck to the Class of 1959 in all their endeavors hoping that they can accomplish as much or more than we have. The Staff of the 1958 Panther sp, .1 .
