Page 4 THE CARDINAL May 17, 1949 ports Review The class of 1949 graduates, one of the greatest arrays of football talent in the history of the school. There have seldom been two successive seasons in which high school football was so decisively dominated by any one section of the state as it was by West Kentucky in 1947-48, when it produced those two tit- ans of the football world, May- field and Tilghman' nor has any one conference been dominated more than has the W K C by Mayfield with a string of ten successive victories In 1949 Western Kentucky undoubtedly will have more strong teams than any other section of the state however rt rsnt likely to develop Hgilll so quickly such football Jugger nauts as the Cardinals and Tor nado of 1947 48 Mayfield to the everlasting mercy of their terrorrstrc rp ponents lost important key men through graduation ten of the starting eleven She rs cer tain therefore to drop from the super colossal and come down to a level with some of the other top flight teams rn 49 In the graduating class of 1949 are the following lettermen with the times each lettered Ends Jerry Cain 2 Jimmy Clark 3 David Carman 2 tac kles Carl Haworth 2 Brlly Joe Sholar 2 guards Jack Wright 3 Bob Byars 3 Howard Dun can 1 Bill Jones 2 Centers Bob Creason 4 backs Elwyn Smith 3 Ed Hendley 3 Joe Hamilton 3 Tom Smith 2 Jimmy Hardemarr, 2 Herby Hunt 2 Jim McNeely 1 Of these seventeen lettermen four were all state Bob Creason was selected on the Courier Journal teams rn 1947 48 and the all southern team rn 1948 Elwyn Smith was honored with a four-year scholarship at the University of Kentucky. Several other members are being sought by various colleges over the country. In 1947 the Cardinals were victorious in nine successive contests before bowing Thanks- giving Day to the state champ- ions. In 1948 the Redbirds were winners of nine of ten games, the lone set-back going to a strong Paris, Tennessee, team 19-13. Several key men were iniured in this game. The Cards defeated Tilghman Thanksgrv ing Day by the decisive margin of 33 13 to win the W K C for thc second straight year and claim their frst state champ ro rshrp rn many years The king rs totterrng on his throne rn Mayfield The Card mals almighty conquerors the peerless champions their shin rnff armor dented now their brr htest blades blunted and waxn foemen with weapons poised and hungry eyes upon them Cin Red Herndons Crrdrnrls with their backfreld rr rinsprrrrg gone their great forward mortors missing ex tend the undefeated span over W K C teams that covers ten consecutive games and claim a third successrxe Western Ken tricky Conference Champion ship Among the graduates are all State renter Bob Creason guards lrck Wright and all Strte Pob Bvars tackle Carl Haworth halfbacks Joe Hamrl ton md all State Elwyn Smith fullback Ed Hendley and quar terb rck Herb Hunt Coach Herndon should be th rnktul it any rate for the fact that there rs no defect at quarterback Hell have veteran I K Maddox returning al though J K was stationed at halfback last season until he received an injury that kept him out the rest of the season Center provides Herndon with a reason to cudgel his brain. He has Walter Apperson in mind, but Appersorr may not pack the weight to take all the battering required of the ball- snapper. The great bright-spot on the Cardinal team is Edgar' Parr, a regular for the past three years and named the most valuable lineman last Thanksgiving Day. This was quite an honor' to win over boys like Mater- nick, Wright, Creason, and By- ars The other tackle is definite- ly a question with Johnny Rhodes getting the nod Ful ler mav nail down one of the guards with the other going to Jrmmv Seay Duncan and Mc Clellan frht for the 'rss gn ments too Bill Taylor a letterman ind Hilton Haley may be the end starters but Dickie Bennett rrrd Wavne Clark must be prcrfred first At the halfbacks there will be Everett Lyles Lyles had a hand rn the Cards winning the W K C last season He is a fine runner and good defensive m rn The other half will be occupied by Billy Houston or Otis El lott Both boys hare speed to spare and are better th rn rver age on defense Jimmy Puckett will hold down the full back slot with Freddie Mills seeing some action Of course there rre o her good boys on the team not men troned above moving up from the freshman team such quarterback Brtsey Taylor Compliments of 0WCI'y S oe Store yfleld Ky I 1 I I 1 I .
