Dear Friends, When I first applied for the AFS exchange program, my friends asked me why I would rather spend my last year of high school away from my friends. I told them that the things I would experience here would be worth more than I could experience in my country. Indeed, I was right. I-lere I had the chance to do many things which are not feasible to do if I had stayed home. I enjoyed playing girls' varsity tennis, varsity basketball, and participating in I-lomecoming. These were all great and new experiences for me. Thank you very much for making me feel so welcome. Love. AFS Foreign Exchange Students - Walter Altez, Fulvia Castelli. Dear Friends, l'm glad I could spend my AFS year at IVlayfair. Going to lvlayfair is one of the ways that I learned how the American culture really is. This country is different of what other people think. You are very friendly people and I like the way that you are involved in many social things. I enjoyed school, playing sports, and participat- ing in the AFS and F'aIefire clubs. I lived with the Scott family, who made me feel right at home. They did every- thing that was possible to make me have a nice experi- ence, going many different places and meeting a lot of people. The only thing I can say is that I had a nice experience and I thank all of you for being my friend. ,layman - Sincerely, Walter . 5 . Ti mf., .,., ff'5,,g..fTg - gf? Palefire I Big brothers, sisters , r 559' Y -' ' . . V x L. i--A Palefire is the Big Brother - Big Sister program at lvlayfair. lvlayfair students give friendship to children that may not have many friends. They offer a good role model that the chil- dren may not be getting elsewhere. Palefire provides its service through group recreational activities planned by the advisor Doug Spohn. The activities this year have in- cluded a Halloween party, Christmas party, progressive dinner, whale watching, miniature golf, picnics, and trips to Disneyland, Olvera Street, Children's Nluseum and the L.A. Zoo. The younger kids in Flalefire love the program and their parents have en- thusiastically endorsed it. At times, the big kids got away for their own enjoyment, doing things like mistletoe hunting, spending a winter weekend in a mountain cabin, and hav- ing a beach party or two. Palefire is high school outreach of family service of Long Beach and is supported by Los Angeles County funds. It is a good example of the posi- tive things going on at Nlayfair.
