News Briefs Mrs. Virginia Felknor, a girls' physical education end health teacher at lVlayfair, is retiring at the end of this year. Nlrs. Felknor has worked in the Bellflower School since September, 'lS54. She has taught at lvlayfair for two years, and previously she taught at Washington .Junior l-ligh School and Bellflower High School. While filling her position will be easy, filling her void will be extremely difficult. The name l-lersek is definitely well known at Nlayfair. All l-lerseks are involved in many activities and they are all very popular with people on campus. lVlr. l-lersek, a I-listory and Family Living teacher, is also advisor of the AFS and a member of the School Improvement Board. Nlr. l-lersek is married and his wife is also a teacher in the Bellflower district. l-le is def- initely one of the most involved teachers at Nlayfair. Through the AFS program, the l-lerseks got a chance to host a student from another country. This year's hostee was Fulvia Cas- telli from Como, ltaly. Fulvia stayed with the l-lerseks since August and was treated like one of the family. Fulvia is 'l S and will gradu- ate with lVlayfair's Class of 'BB. The l-lerseks also have four children of their own. Their oldest son, lVlike, 'lS, left last summer for Israel through AFS pro- gram. l-le will be returning this summer af- ter a year's stay. Tracy, 'lS, is lVlayfair's Drum Nlajor this year. She has been involved in AFS, Nlarching Band and .Jazz Band throughout her years at lvlayfair. Jeanine, 'l S, is also in the lvlarching Band, a member of the Varsity Yell, and has been on the Windjammer staff, and Paul, the l-lersek's youngest son, is 'I 5. l-le is a member of the E34 Nlarchng Band and is also involved in AFS. The l-lerseks have surely proved themselves to be one of the most dedicated families at lvlayfair. ' Through the AFS program, Lesli l-lolt, an 'S'l graduate of lvlayfair, visited Argentina. Lesli stayed in the small town of General Cabrera. l-ler host family in Argentina were lVlr. and lVlrs. Smutt and their daughter Laura. After a three-month stay, Lesli re- turned to her family in America. Then in De- cember 'l SS'l , her AFS sister Laura Smutt came to California and stayed with Lesli and her family. Laura returned home to Argenti- na in lvlarch, 'l SSE. There were several activities that we'd like to mention that we almost forgot because, as you can tell, it's at the end of this book. Baising money was a favorite activity of many groups. A car wash sponsored by the Ski Club helped to raise money for the club. lvlrs. Swiek and several club members bor- rowed the facilities of the lVlobile gas station on South St. and Bellflower Blvd. to wash away the grime on cars of Lakewood resi- dents. Another activity that raised money was the Adelphi rummage sale. Club mem- bers brought in books, magazines and other merchandise that sold well. The Drill Team also got involved in making money. Cccasionally, a Drill Team member would come up and ask if you would like to buy a fuzzy little stick-on creature or black market candy. Around Valentine's day, cheerleaders could be caught trying to sell buttons that said l Love followed by your favorite per- son's name or activities on it. These buttons went over so well that they could be seen all around campus.
