,f Things to do and happenings too Ti This year, like years before, there were many things that people were doing all over the country. Video games were the big thing with people of ell ages, with Atari being the leader of the video game companies. Any- where these games could be found, people were seen dropping quarters into Fiac lvlan, Defender and Centipede, just a few of the more popular arcade games. l-lowever, arcades weren't the only place these games could be found. Video game sales went up drastically this year, as more and more peo- ple were buying these games for home use on their own television sets. This saved these people a fortune in quarters. A fitness craze swept over the nation this year, and almost everyone got involved in some kind of exercise. Flunning was the fit- ness fad of the '7O's, but people began to find many faults in running. Aerobic dancing, swimming and walking are the exercises of the 'SO's. These exercises have become ex- tremely popular this year, mainly because they got you in shape, but also because they're fun. Even businessmen were getting into shape in 'l SSE. lVlany executives could 'l SCJ - Off The Wall: Social l be found in gyms during their lunch breaks, working out for an hour a day. Dallas, the first official prime time soap opera, has led to many new prime time soaps, including Dynasty, Falcon Crest, and King's Cros- sing. Only time will tell if any of them become hits. Late night comedy shows, like Satur- day Night Live and Fridays are still ex- tremely popular with teenagers, and Sunday afternoons are now spiced up with Elvira, lvlistress of the Dark land lVlistress of Bad lVlovies.J. The T.V. industry gained many new shows, but it also experienced some losses this year. oliuisfe. always a hope for freedom. Another event that put the LJ. S. back into the space race was the launching of the space shuttle, Colombia. The world saw the first reusable spaceship launch from a ver- tical position. The ship then went into space for BC orbits and landed at Edwards Air Force Base in he Nlojave Desert. Coming down, it looked like a regular oversized plane. The shuttle, like the Apollo program, should bring in new technology and a new challenge to seek out the final frontier. There were also some other news items which caught world's attention. The death of lsraeli Foreign lvlinister lvloshe Dayan stunned israel. We saw Europe strike out against the storing of American and Flussian nuclear weapons. In ltaly, American General .James Dozier was kidnapped and held by the Red Brigade, a strong underground power. Cn the American scene, things in the news ranged from women gaining and losing ground to the economy going for a roller- coaster ride. While Sandra Day C'Connor was showing women can get into high places, namely the Supreme Court, the EFRA fell on its face due to the lack of state rati- fication of the amendment. When buying a car, it seemed as though Ford and Chrysler couIdn't give us enough money in rebates. Even with the rebates and a free mainte- nance plans the auto industry still faced mass lay-offs and indefinite plant closings. These lay-offs came at a time of extremely high unemployment and cost of living rates. These political events were just a few of the more important things that happened in '81 and 82.
