C .J 'I Blasting ears out with small personal cassette and radio units seemed to be a favorite fad of the many musically-inclined co-eds at Mayfair. A book to live by? Some people thought there was nothing else to life besides the Preppy Handbook and lzod shirts. IFor more, see f shion.J The beginning of the baffling puzzles was the F'lubik's Cube, which spurred the same puzzles holding keys. Fleal or imitation, only dollars and a name made the difference with the in sunglasses. A classic example of a Flock 'n' F-loll tour. A band such as the Police came out with a new hit album and followed up with a tour including Official Programs and KLCJS TOO l-llP stickers. .X My , , .X gi li, ,ri 1 'i ,Q- ' W 'A . 3 flJ G.. .7 3 X I V, - ,mg Xx ,' ' ,A gi . The look of the frontier days was brought back in an updated form. Full denim skirts with petticoats were matched with big, ruffled prairie tops and boots to achieve the look of the Clld West. This femininely western way of dressing was extremely popular in 'BE When it came to sweats, bright, brilliant colors were the key. Sweats no longer come in only blue and grey. They could be found in any color of the rainbow. Sweats became more fashionable and could be worn almost anywhere. And when they were worn with leg warmers, the look seemed unbeatable. However, leg warmers weren't only being worn with sweats. They were being teamed with every- thing, including jeans, shorts, and even dresses. Leg warmers were definitely the biggest fad in fashion this season. Designer jeans have been considered in for many years, and this year was no exception, .Jeans have been so popular because of their versatility. They were paired with everything from sweaters and lace for a dressy look, to sweatshirts and tennis shoes for more casual times. No matter what time of year, the surfers on the lvlayfair campus were always dressed their way. Plain or shine, they wore shorts, T-shirts, and tennis shoes. And when the cold weather was gone, most of the T-shirts were too. lVlany famous designers, Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent and Oscar de la Renta, to name a few, come along with new fashions every year. This year was no exception. These creations, many of which were ex- tremely outrageous, were the fashions everyone wanted, but ever-present inflation made them very expensive. So for now, we'Il just have to keep wearing our own styles, at least until next year. 1. lvlodeling the new sailor look, Uma Veerappa shows one of the new fashion trends. 2. The old days return. Flobin Davis shows off the traditional prairie tcp. 3. lvlega-Prep! Chris lvlarduez displays the necessities of the Preppy wardrobe. 4. Amber Broussard wears an updated version of the miniskirt, one of the many fashions that made a comeback this season. Off The Well: Fashion - 'l 513

Q l.lnlike years before, we had a difficult time finding things that would be considered in. These pictures show a few of the fads this year that were very popular. The l:iubik's Cube started a whole line of puzzles in all shapes and sizes, including spheres, pyramids, and chains, which also led to the same thing in key chains. Personal cassette players were also very popular this year. They made it easy for people to listen to their favor- ite music while running, riding bikes, skiing, or just shut- ting out the world entirely. Sunglasses were another favorite of the in crowd. Everywhere you looked, people were wearing sunglasses, either inexpensive imitations or costly Vuarnets for the lucky few. Of course, the ultra cool glasses were nothing without peeper keepers. Although only a few people at Nlayfair took the preppy look to it's limits, people around the campus could be seen wearing alligator and Polo shirts and sweaters, but- ton-down lvladras shirts and Topsiders. Even a few copies of the Preppy l-landbook were seen floating around school. Like years before, going to see your fa- vorite rock group in concert was a favorite pastime. The Police, like many other bands, came out with a highly acclaimed album and followed it with a world tour. As you can see, we have only touched a few bases. Looking at fads throughout the year, these were the things that stood out in our minds. Etc.: Off the Wall - 'l 55
