AFS student Kari Gregersen adds to May fair ' s new decade Mayfair High was fortunate enough again in 1969 to have a foreign exchange student on campus. She is Kari Gregersen, tall, blond and energetic. She is from Oslo, Norway, where she lives with her parents and one brother. While at Mayfair, Kari lives with senior Debbie Mc- Allister and her family. Kari enjoys horseback riding, books about famous people and good movies. She likes to get together with friends for conversation. She says she has little time for pleasure in Norway because the schools are very strict. School is six days a week and students attend 14 classes a day. There isn ' t much time for social life during the school year. Kari was Mayfair ' s honorary homecoming princess this year. She was very impressed by football season at MHS. She ' d never seen a foot- ball game until this year. She said she doesn ' t understand all the screaming and talking during the game. The Student Body was truly proud to have Kari as their Foreign Exchange student in the dawning of the new decade. r Moi m oni % ' 5 Kari eixjoyed attending classes at Mayfair and considered ihcni easier than in Norway. The staff of the 1970 TRADEWINDS is proud to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Merle Bailey. His five years of dedicated service to Mayfair make him more than worthy of this honor. Since Mr. Bailey ' s first year at Mayfair, his list of duties has included teaching Spanish and History, coaching the Cee Basketball team, and he is currently Director of Activities. In 1967, he organized the May- fair branch of Key Club International, and has trans- formed it into one of the most important and active of campus service clubs. Mr. Bailey took the job of Di- rector of Activities in 1968 and has proved to be an outstanding administrator. His leadership and enthu- siasm has inspired the ASB cabinet and added greatly to his ability to coordinate all student activities. He was a guiding force behind Mayfair ' s school partner- ship program and the adoption of Jaime Medrano. We are proud to dedicate the eleventh edition of the TRADEWINDS to Mr. Merle Bailey, whose spirit and loyalty is inspiring our new decade. Battling his busy schedule Mr. Bailey still finds time for coaching the Monsoon Cee Basketball team. Coach Bailey can boast many league championships due to his loyalty and work with each individual team member. Mr. Bailey is respected for his unique way of classroom teaching mt m

Monsoon Lynn Siegal travels to Japan on AFS program In June of 1969 Monsoon Lynn Siegal re- ceived a telegram from the New York office of the American Field Service. That was the first time she was assured a placement in the Americans Abroad Program. Lynn traveled to Japan for the summer months as a student tourist. She lived with a Japanese family in the city of Yokahama. The family consisted of her parents, brother, sister, aunt and grandmother. I loved my fam- ily, they were quiet, happy, warm and very withdrawn from emotion, said Lynn. Lynn explained that the Japanese world was very very different from America. It was hard for Lynn to feel at home sometimes but she learned to love and respect her family and all Japanese people. In Japan, all the schools are private and none are co-ed. Memorization is the only meth- od of study without any discussion in class. College entrance exams are given only once and if they are not passed the chances of col- lege are gone. Senior Lynn said that she would love to see everyone go abroad if given the chance. Trav- eling expands the mind. Members of Lynn ' s Japanese family help her pack for home. Just before Lynn ' s departure for America this flag exchange took place in front of her Japanese school.
