The 1960 ' s were years of progress and development for May- fair. New teachers, a new principal, a relaxed dress code and the modular scheduling system started in the 60 ' s. Mayfair ' s athletic teams continued to win league championships. With the help of the Peace Corps, Mayfair built an elementary school in Peru. An or- phan in Arizona is being sponsored by money gathered from generous Mon- soons. 1970 is the Dawn of a New Decade. It is also the dawn of new ideals at Mayfair, new accomplishments, new students and new traditions for a young growing school. Dedication : erle Bailey The staff of the 1970 TRADEWINDS is proud to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Merle Bailey. His five years of dedicated service to Mayfair make him more than worthy of this honor. Since Mr. Bailey ' s first year at Mayfair, his list of duties has included teaching Spanish and History, coaching the Cee Basketball team, and he is currently Director of Activities. In 1967, he organized the May- fair branch of Key Club International, and has trans- formed it into one of the most important and active of campus service clubs. Mr. Bailey took the job of Di- rector of Activities in 1968 and has proved to be an outstanding administrator. His leadership and enthu- siasm has inspired the ASB cabinet and added greatly to his ability to coordinate all student activities. He was a guiding force behind Mayfair ' s school partner- ship program and the adoption of Jaime Medrano. We are proud to dedicate the eleventh edition of the TRADEWINDS to Mr. Merle Bailey, whose spirit and loyalty is inspiring our new decade. Battling his busy schedule Mr. Bailey still finds time for coaching the Monsoon Cee Basketball team. Coach Bailey can boast many league championships due to his loyalty and work with each individual team member. Mr. Bailey is respected for his unique way of classroom teaching mt m AFS student Kari Gregersen adds to May fair ' s new decade Mayfair High was fortunate enough again in 1969 to have a foreign exchange student on campus. She is Kari Gregersen, tall, blond and energetic. She is from Oslo, Norway, where she lives with her parents and one brother. While at Mayfair, Kari lives with senior Debbie Mc- Allister and her family. Kari enjoys horseback riding, books about famous people and good movies. She likes to get together with friends for conversation. She says she has little time for pleasure in Norway because the schools are very strict. School is six days a week and students attend 14 classes a day. There isn ' t much time for social life during the school year. Kari was Mayfair ' s honorary homecoming princess this year. She was very impressed by football season at MHS. She ' d never seen a foot- ball game until this year. She said she doesn ' t understand all the screaming and talking during the game. The Student Body was truly proud to have Kari as their Foreign Exchange student in the dawning of the new decade. r Moi m oni % ' 5 Kari eixjoyed attending classes at Mayfair and considered ihcni easier than in Norway. Kari and her American family The McAllisters Monsoon Lynn Siegal travels to Japan on AFS program In June of 1969 Monsoon Lynn Siegal re- ceived a telegram from the New York office of the American Field Service. That was the first time she was assured a placement in the Americans Abroad Program. Lynn traveled to Japan for the summer months as a student tourist. She lived with a Japanese family in the city of Yokahama. The family consisted of her parents, brother, sister, aunt and grandmother. I loved my fam- ily, they were quiet, happy, warm and very withdrawn from emotion, said Lynn. Lynn explained that the Japanese world was very very different from America. It was hard for Lynn to feel at home sometimes but she learned to love and respect her family and all Japanese people. In Japan, all the schools are private and none are co-ed. Memorization is the only meth- od of study without any discussion in class. College entrance exams are given only once and if they are not passed the chances of col- lege are gone. Senior Lynn said that she would love to see everyone go abroad if given the chance. Trav- eling expands the mind. Members of Lynn ' s Japanese family help her pack for home. Just before Lynn ' s departure for America this flag exchange took place in front of her Japanese school. Mayfair High dawns new principal in 1969 Mr. Ken Davis became principal of Mayfair High School last year with the retirement of Richard Oswald. In his short time at the post, it can easily be seen that Mr. Davis will be of great benefit to MHS. His spirit and enthusiasm are enjoyed by all students and faculty members. Mr. Davis has been at Mayfair since 1963 as vice -principal of Sub-School III until this school year when he moved into the principal ' s office. Mr. Davis still finds time to attend many Monsoon athletic events and various activities. He enjoys talking to all the students and has held spcak-outs to listen to students ' opinions about individual campus problems. The appointment of Mr. Davis as MHS principal was a great addition to the dawn- ing of a new decade. The three months of September, October and November 1969 meant pep rallies, spirit, lots of hard practices and Homecoming. Homecoming came early this year, on October 17, 1969. The dawn of a new decade festivities began with the selection of the Homecoming Court. Kathy McCracken, Lisa Lewis, Rhonda Strunk, Carol Trask and Anne Vincent were chosen by the class of 1970 as princesses. AFS student Kari Gregersen made up the sixth mem- ber of the court as an honorary princess. The crowning moment was the climax of the eventful week. The lights were dimmed and princess Lisa Lewis, who won the hearts of all Monsoons in her sincere Homecoming speech, became the 1969-70 Homecoming Queen. Homecoming gave memories to everyone at Mayfair. They are memories that will always be treasured at the dawn of a new decade. MH ■ ' W ♦ A .1 I Classes: Dawn of Achievement hm To Seniors, the dawning of a new decade meant tiie last of four great years at Mayfair High. These were four years of happiness, friendship, new experiences and much more. It was the last year for: Yelling at football games; Rockin ' out at soc hops; Eating cafeteria food; Talking in class; Going to Proms and Learning to drive. The Class of the new decade will leave MHS with happy remembrances of all four years. They are now alumni and part of the history of Mayfair High School. Who could forget the Friday nights. Eating at Bob ' s ' til Full of delight. Remember all those party celebrations. The presents, the thoughts. The wild decorations. Also the days we spent At the beach. Sand fights, surfing. Being thrown in, ieek! We have so many memories. It ' s hard to recall. But when you look back. You remember them all. ' s have remained unde- feated league champions for three straight years. This year ' s varsity has a record of 12-1 compared to last year ' s record of 11-1. Two years ago their record was 1 1-0, amassing a three year total of 34 victories and only 2 losses. The Cross-Country has won a total of 17 championships, (one under former coach Howard Barnes and 16 under the present coaching of Mr. Nick Street), in the 12 years of competition. This is more than all present schools combined. No other team in history has a record to match. In C.I.F. competition, the varsity has qualified every year since 1963. Finishing in the top 20 on six occasions and as high as 2nd in 1965 when Mayfair got its only C.I.F. trophy. The J.V. ' s have acquired the exact record as the varsity and have also been league champions for three years. The Freshman harriers also captured league honors with a record of seven wins and two losses. This out- standing freshman team leaves great expectations for fu- ture varsity title hopes. Front Row K Bures, A Coxson, R Mefferd H . K. Robinson, R. De Graff. S. Thayer. Nut pii.tuicU. I D. Carey. The Student Body Cabinet has tried its best to guide students through tiiese changes. The group of 16 student leaders met each day in leadership class to discuss the ma- jor problems of the school. Freshman orientation marked the start of the year of the new decade. The class of 1973 was informed of opportunities in clubs and athletic teams. The 1969-70 Pep Squad performed in front of MHS students for the first time. Freshmen were officially introduced to Mayfair High. The United Crusade proved Mayfair to be the most generous school in the district. Donations totaled more than $650.00 due to extra activities planned by the Cabinet. In January of the new decade, the ASB cabinet began the task of reorgani- zing the MHS Pep Squad to improve spirit and enthusiasm. Speak-Out days continued along with the sponsorship of Jaime Madero, the six year-old orphan in Arizona. The school partnership program was highlighted this year by letters from students at Mayfair ' s Peruvian school. In March, a benefit show was given by the Cabinet featuring George Sharp. All profits went to donations for MHS alumna, Marie Reynolds, who was in- volved in a serious automobile accident in October. Spring Sports Week was celebrated successfully for its second year in 1970. The Cabinet began coordinating the week ' s festivities in January, with three committees working on the mid-March event. June meant the end of a challenging year for the 1969-70 Cabinet. End of the year events were the Awards Assembly, distribution of the annuals. Senior Prom, Senior Breakfast and finally Graduation. The Cabinet members would like to thank the entire MHS student body for their help and cooperation through the past year of the new decade. This past year Mayfair has had a series of changes that will become established In the new decade. The next few pages will pictorially depict a few of these changes. Mayfair ' s unique Sub-School plan began in 1958 when the school opened. Under this new plan, administration, dis- cipline and counseling were divided among the Sub-School offices. A change in this plan on the drawing board; how- ever, had to be initiated early due to the resignation of Sub- School 11 vice-principal, Mr. Jack Thompson. An individualized instructional program, will become the main focus of the new system, explains Mayfair principal, Mr. Ken Davis. The new .system provided a total of three administrators — Mr. Davis, Mr. Prince and Mr. Brink. Mr. Davis, as prin- cipal, works directly with the department chairmen and the entire faculty to try to bring the most effective instructional program to MHS. Mr. Prince became basically the plant manager , which makes him responsible for keeping the whole school in oper- ation. He works very closely with the Athletics and Activities offices, the school nurse, the building foreman and manages all financial matters of the school. Any serious discipline is now handled solely by Mr. Brink, while matters of lesser degree are left up to the coun- seling center. There is also an attendance supervisor who handles all disciplinary attendance problems. Students are now assigned to counselors according to their grade level. TTie new administrative plan has not been fully revealed. In September. Teacher Educational Advisors will be provided for all Monsoons, as well as many more new administrative ideas. Administrative reorganization was not the only change at Mayfair in 1970. The first day of the second semester brought about the start of the single lunch program. The use of paper plates and plastic utensils came into view. Students could no longer complain that their friends had another lunch, so less program changes occurred. Pontoon classes for members of the class of 71 began in January. It was an experiment in curriculum developmeiit. The class consisted of 150 juniors enrolled in American His- tory, American Literature and P.E. It featured a program of team teaching and a unique physical education program. Con ' t. Mayfair ' s Pep Squad faced reorganization in the year of the new decade also. Due to discipline problems. Pep Squad was dissolved in October and when reorganization was con- sidered, many new ideas came into view. After taking surveys from many high schools and the House of Representatives, the ASB Cabinet proposed an all-boy yell squad for the 70- 71 school year. Other changes were all-school elections of yell and song leaders, which would allow the students who will be yelling and singing to have a vote. This was also only proposed. The radical idea of immediateh changing to an all-boy yell squad was brought on due to the lack of enthusiasm at sports events and previous problems with the yell squad. The idea is similar to the kind of arrangement found at most colleges where boys are the ones directing spirit and the girls are used for grace. t r-r Because of distirct budget cuts, the first year of the new decade will feel the effect of a money shortage. Several teaching positions will be eliminated and classes with a limited amount of participation will be cut. September 14, 1969, was the first day of Mayfair ' s liberalized dress code. It seems now that we have always had casual dress. Beards, mustaches and sideburns grow unhampered and girls no longer are suspended for short dresses or for wearing pants. Students take the no dress code for granted now, but what they don ' t realize is that Mayfair is one of the few schools without dress regulations. l.ooking over past events, we can ' t help but wonder, What will tomorrow bring? ie.
