WI-IITTINGTON Social Studies The Social Studies Department involves five in- structors who teach about the United States and . ancient world history. With class discussions and the use of visual aids, filmstrips, and maps, stu- dents will develop a better understanding of history and geography. The purpose of these courses is to give students the opportunity to know and understand different climates and cultures. The main purpose of this department is to help the student to become proficient in his attempt to attack a problem in a logical order. These goals are accomplished through the media of lecture and demonstration, the overhead projector, student ex- planation, and live subject matter experiences. Some of the tools commonly used in math courses are: Compasses, protractors, yard sticks, meter sticks, T squares, and other plastic and wooden figures. KERTH i p f' MR, SHERIDAN Sclence Mayberry's Science Department's aim is to in- crease the students' experience with scientific phe- nomenon that they can apply to their everyday life. Experimental projects vary from watching plants, to studying bacteria culture as they develop, to dis- secting frogs. Teachers believe that if a person has a great knowledge of Science and is able to adapt to his environment, he will be a better citizen of tom- orrow. an There's more to typing than just A B C. ID Goldfishj Typlng The goals of the Typing Department are to develop skills sufficient enough to help the students aquire a secretarial or business careeer in the future. The course is available only to ninth graders. Some of the activities that the classes work on dur- ing the year are learning to type postcards, notes, letters, short compositions, formal manuscripts, and business letters. The typing course stresses the development of habits which will help the students all through their lives, such as accuracy, speed, self-discipline, wil- lingness to Work, and initiative. Good typing ability can only be accomplished by daily practice, and depends completely on the stu- dents attitude and the personal goals he sets for him- self. MRS, FREED
