Chess Club The Chess Club, under the direction of Mr. Dole, meets every Wednesday at 3:00. During these meetings, the members compete against each other. In addition to playing chess, the members also play three dimen- sional games, which are an added feature this year. This year the members participated in a chess contest, which was held in the Beech Recreation Center. CHESS CLUB: FRONT ROW: Mr. Dole, Jeff Armstrong, Jerry Hernpsyer. SECOND ROW: Larry Armstrong, Don Nicholson, Mark Maris, and Doug Griswold. English Prep English Prep, an experimen- tal junior high elective language arts class, is being offered at Mayberry for the first time. This class performed the Thanksgiving play this year. Members also learned about newspapers and yearbooks and put out several school papers and the yearbook. Students also participated in several speech activities, in- cluding class discussions, panel discussions, speeches and debates. One of the reasons for cov- ering these areas-speech, journalism, and drama--is to introduce the student to them for future participation in high school. SECOND ROW: Tracy Volker, Dudley Richardson, Harold Brandenburg, Steven Corn, Kurt Johnson, Neal Holland, Carlton Dienstbach, Mike O'Reilly, and Coach Nutter. THIRD ROW: David Kemp, Randy Rucker, Mark Eaton, James Hukle, and Rick Shaw. 54 Basketball The varsity squad is made up of 13 boys picked from intramural teams. The coaches choose two tournament teams with 9 players on each. Then these teams play against each other and the best players are picked for the varsity team. The team practices nights af- ter school under the instruction of Coach Nutter. This group is for the boys with a lot of basketball ability. There are three qualifications for membership on the team: good citizenship, good grades, and ability.
