HAROLD MORGAN Sparnsh The main goals of the Spanish Department are for each student to learn a basic vocabulary and to have a better understanding of the Spanish people and customs. The students also sing Spanish songs and original dialogs. ln the advanced classes there are days when the class speaks only in Spanish. Each student has a set of ear phones which enable him to listen to Spanish spoken by natives. Flashcards, records, filmstrips, and tapes are also used. MRS. CARMICHAEL USES the chalkboard to show students how to write a Spanish sentence. 38 Phy9caIEducaUOn The Objectives of physical education are to play different sports, learn the rules, improve co- ordination, learn to be good sports and, for ninth graders, learn first aid. The boys' gym classes do many things during the school year. Some of these are participating in football, basketball, wrestling, track and soft- ball. SANDRA wi Social Studies The Social Studies teachers use a variety of methods to get the subject matter across to the stu- dents. For instance, they use films, tapes, news- papers, reports visual aids, and maps. The department teachers hope to help the stu- dent become a better world citizen by making him more aware of the things going on around him and in the world. Mathematics The goal of the Math Department is to extend the knowledge of the students in mathematics. It presents the subject matter through the media of lecture and demonstration, the overhead projector, student explanations and live subject matter ex- periences. Not only does the department give students practice in practical experience with numbers it also tries to explore with the students the why behind the various concepts. MR.
