He is mainly concerned with Working with the teachers and tries to see that the students have the very best surroundings to Work and learn in. He also deals in public relations with parents and the community. Mr. Hale, the assistant prin cipal, deals mostly with the stu- dents. He takes care of atten- dance, discipline, and rental textbooks. He helps enroll stu- dents and schedules new students. FRED HALE, Assistant Principal Secretaries Mrs. Marilyn Dole and Mrs. janet Rose Office Staff Mayberry's office staff consists of Mrs. Rose, Mrs. Dole, and Mrs. Stabler. Mrs. Rose takes care of attendance at Mayberry. She enrolls new students, takes messages, and types bulletins She keeps the school records, and Writes letters. Mrs. Dole's main job is keeping payrolls, writing checks, keeping book rentals, and handling the data process- ing materials. She calls sub- stitutes When teachers are ill. Mrs. Stabler is May- berry's attendance aid. I-ler Work includes going to the homes of students and helping them with their attendance problems. Attendance Aid Mrs. Stabler . HiQfs TWO OFFICE PROCTORS check the absence roll at Mayberry. Miss Sears and Mrs. Biggs, counselors, discuss the enrollment assembly. 6 MRS. LARINE BIGGS o n Mrs. Shirley, nurse, takes the temperature of Debra Riner in the health room. MISS MARIANNA SEARS Counselors The counselors at Mayberry spend hours each week working with students who need special help in many different areas. Both Mrs. Biggs and Miss Sears help students en- roll in courses for the next year. Also they work with students who need help with vo- cational and other educational problems. Students may also go to either of the coun- selors when they have a personal problem with which they need advice. Mrs. Biggs is the eighth and ninth grades counselor, and Miss Sears, who also serves another junior high half days, is the seventh grade counselor. Students, how- ever, may see either counselor regardless of grade if necessary. Both counselors HAVE been specially trained to work with students and their varied problems. Nurse The Mayberry nurse is Mrs. Shirley. While only at Mayberry part of the time, she nevertheless performs many valuable services for students. Many students think of a nurse only when they are ill, but, while Mrs. Shirley does work with them, she does a number of other things. In addition to keeping student health records up to date, she conducts dental checks and eye examinations. She also gives demonstrations to some of the classes at Mayberry. Library One of the areas that most students al- most never miss is the school library. Mrs. Armstrong is in charge of the library and as the librarian is responsible for keeping the library in order and ordering new books and rebinding old ones. Mrs. Armstrong is also the one whom teachers see when they want special help in providing supplemental books for their units One of the librarian's special jobs is to help students find books to read for enjoy- ment. Mrs. Armstrong is always ready for helping students in this area. Mr. Whitehouse uses one of the many books found in the Mayberry library. MRS. MARILYN ARMSTRONG wi MR. WAYNE MEANS . t idid stss J R Speech Although at Mayberry only 9. short time each week, the speech clinician, Mr. Means, works with students who have speech and hearing problems. He not only gives Various speech and hearing tests to students but also works with some students to help them improve their communication skills. While Mayberry is his base school -- that is, he reports here for information from his colleauges -- Mr. Means also works with students from several other schools, inclu- ding high school and elementary school. These ladies are responsible for the preparation of food in the cafeteria each day. Auxiliary Help The cafeteria, managed by Mrs. McRae, is Where Mayberry students eat each day. The staff prepares large amounts of food which is consumed by students. In addition to actual food prepa- ration, the ladies are respon- sible for cleaning up after lunch is over. Mrs. McRae orders the food and supplies for Mayberry as one of her duties. Menus are pre- pared by her also. Mr. Gibbs, as headcustodian, is responsible for the cleaning up of the school building. I-Ie and his staff sweep and dust the rooms every night after students have gone home. Leadership and cooperation with other people are important also. Passing Proctors Forty students are serving as passing proctors at the 2O,4O, and 60 wing intersections. Chess Club The Chess Club, under the direction of Mr. Dole, meets every Wednesday at 3:00. During these meetings, the members compete against each other. In addition to playing chess, the members also play three dimen- sional games, which are an added feature this year. English Prep English Prep, an experimen- tal junior high elective language arts class, is being offered at Mayberry for the first time. This class performed the Thanksgiving play this year. Members also learned about newspapers and yearbooks and put out several school papers and the yearbook. Students also participated in several speech activities, in- cluding class discussions, panel discussions, speeches and debates. One of the reasons for cov- ering these areas-speech, journalism, and drama--is to introduce the student to them for future participation in high school. The coaches choose two tournament teams with 9 players on each. Then these teams play against each other and the best players are picked for the varsity team. The team practices nights af- ter school under the instruction of Coach Nutter. This group is for the boys with a lot of basketball ability. There are three qualifications for membership on the team: good citizenship, good grades, and ability. These girls promote school spirit by leading the Pep Club in cheers. Their outfits include gold vests and skirts with black pleats, black kneesocks, and a black M emblem on the front. Of the 9th grade girls who tried out, twelve finalists were picked and of these twelve three were picked: Joyce Seevers, Vicki Coats and julie Boyd. Pep Club Pep Club is sponsored by Miss Krack and Mrs. lsernhagen. Members wear the same outfits to school on game days, then to the games. The outfits include black turtleneck sweaters, black kneesocks, gold skirts and vests, with Mayberrybooster buttons. There are no specific requirements tojoin the club, but the girls have to be willing to attend games, learn cheers, and provide their own outfits. Pep Club members cheer at the games as the cheerleaders lead. They all sit to- gether at the games to give the team a boost and encourage school spirit. The main reasons are to give the boys a chance to become better competitors, sportsmen, and to learn the rules of the games. Any boy Wanting to attend the football or basketball intra- mural games after school on the nights that their team plays are eligible. The basketball squads are picked from the intramural teams. The coaches encourage boys to go out for these teams. The boys are used for referees and 9th grade managers. Girls The girls' intramural program this year is an exciting after-school activity which gives the girls a chance to further increase their skills in particular sports which have been presented to them in gym classes. This program is also set up to teach the girls the rules of the games and to let them participate in cer- tain sports. The girls choose teamsg then these teams have a tournament.
