Elfen M. Gates TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1976: Two hundred years ago in our American history a slogan was coined, ‘’The Spirit of ‘76.’ These words came to symbolize fortitude, strength of character, and desire of the colonists in this new frontier. They were determined to face the future in a positive, constructive fashion and tomold'their lifestyle and their country into something better than what they had before. In many ways your graduating class, the class of ‘76, possesses a similar type of positive spirit and readiness. This year was one of many entertaining and educational assembly programs where students were the focal point. We will never forget the fact that both our boys and girls basketball teams completed undefeated seasons, our student fashion show was quite a hit as were the carnival and the faculty production of ‘‘Maxson Follies’’ — why, this was the year that saw even the principal defeated at the checker table. But, in all seriousness, the role you played in bringing about positive change at Maxson Middle School was truly a lesson in participatory democracy. Student and staff cooperation was an obvious element in the successful year that we have all enjoyed. Following the summer recess you will be full-fledged high school students, and have learned firsthand that your influence does count and that you can make good things happen around you if you put forth effort in a constructive fashion, working in conjunction with school authorities. This, of course, can be applied to life itself—not just school situations. You leave Maxson with a positive feeling about yourselves and an awareness of your potential for leadership and involvement. The pattern of living that you are demonstrating at this stage of your life can be carried over into adulthood—you are at the crossroads right now. Please remember, as you enjoy the fun of the high school experience, that your major purpose is to secure the necessary educational tools to open ‘‘doors to your future.’’ Let nothing stand between you and that academic achievement; itis yours for the earning. Think of yourselves as the new, ‘Spirit of ‘76’. Your principal, Hal F.
