THE SCRIBE Preface In presenting the 1956 Hammer, the staff has attemptei order of knighthood in the general plan of the book, there The Merry Adventures of the Knights of '56. What mc Fide et Anime would be more appropriate for a group be known as knights? Since knighthood was a profession ' r s many years of training and service, we have likened our four years of school life to this period. To become aknight was the goal of every young boy, just as graduation from high school is the goal of every student. When the young man proved his fitness, his formal training ended. I dub thee knight was said by the lord as, with his sword, he gave the coveted accolade on the candidate's shoulder. I congratulate you is said to each senior as he receives his diploma, thus signifying that his formal high school train- ing is over. After achieving a coveted goal, a knight was always anxious to be challenged or to become a challenger so that he might prove his worth. Tournaments were very popular and many were the jousts that attracted a knight. Banquets, rewards, music , and dancing completed the fes- tivities ofthe tournaments. We, also, by means of our contests, sports, and tournaments be- come challengers and the challenged. We cel- ebrate the closing of various activities by hav- ing banquets and dances. Ajournal of our school life would not be well-rounded if we did not in- clude, in our book, pictures of our social gather- ings and make mention of those organizations that were always so willing to add a note of Jolene Carpenter music whenever the occasion called for it. Editor-In-Chief The staff of the 1956 Hammer sincerely l hopes that this book will aid the pages, squires, and knights of Mauston High School in remem- bering the many happy hours they spent here in work and play. -------The Editor Otis Franke Miss Kucirek John Scully Business Manager Faculty Adviser Dance Sponsa 4
