Comments THE SCRIBE Preface In presenting the 1956 Hammer, the staff has attemptei order of knighthood in the general plan of the book, there The Merry Adventures of the Knights of '56. What mc Fide et Anime would be more appropriate for a group be known as knights? Since knighthood was a profession ' r s many years of training and service, we have likened our four years of school life to this period. To become aknight was the goal of every young boy, just as graduation from high school is the goal of every student. When the young man proved his fitness, his formal training ended. I dub thee knight was said by the lord as, with his sword, he gave the coveted accolade on the candidate's shoulder. I congratulate you is said to each senior as he receives his diploma, thus signifying that his formal high school train- ing is over. After achieving a coveted goal, a knight was always anxious to be challenged or to become a challenger so that he might prove his worth. Tournaments were very popular and many were the jousts that attracted a knight. Banquets, rewards, music , and dancing completed the fes- tivities ofthe tournaments. We, also, by means of our contests, sports, and tournaments be- come challengers and the challenged. We cel- ebrate the closing of various activities by hav- ing banquets and dances. Ajournal of our school life would not be well-rounded if we did not in- clude, in our book, pictures of our social gather- ings and make mention of those organizations that were always so willing to add a note of Jolene Carpenter music whenever the occasion called for it. Editor-In-Chief The staff of the 1956 Hammer sincerely l hopes that this book will aid the pages, squires, and knights of Mauston High School in remem- bering the many happy hours they spent here in work and play. -------The Editor Otis Franke Miss Kucirek John Scully Business Manager Faculty Adviser Dance Sponsa 4 Shawn Arntz Freshman Class Editor Evelyn Belk Faculty Editor Amiel Hepp June Holden Janice LaFrance Photography Editor Art Editor Typist Judith Larson Lorelei McNown Audrey Martin Senior Class Editor Special Features Editor Social Editor Joanne Miles Thomas Reigard Charlotte Kunkel Organizations Editor Sports Editor Sophomore Class Editor James Voborsky Junior. CRUSADE OF I956 TO l966 Ten years have passed! What are the former classmates of the Class of 1956 doing? Let us return to Mauston where many of them have made their homes and find out something about each one. Carol Post is trying to make her first million through her monopoly on popcorn machines at all the nearby thea- tres. Busily working in the Juneau County Courthouse are Mae Schultz and Evelyn Belk, secretaries, and Jolene Car- penter, home agent. Clerking in two of Mauston's grocery stores are Bonnie Walter and Virginia Seager. Clarence Russell is farming. Speaking of farming. we are not surprised to hear that Neil Peterson is trying to develop a type of cotton that will grow in Wisconsin. Beverly Brokopp is the director of her church choir. We visit school. Maus- ton High Schoolhas claimed four of our classmates. Ina Mae Bader is a dietician and in charge of the school's lunches. Arlen Kahl, janitor, is busy with the broom. Marlene Mojzis teaches kindergarten and here we meet Mary Bohatta, waiting for little Johnny to be dismissed From her,we learn that John Scully has applied for a job as English teach- er, and that Evelyn Pfaff has finally found that matching ring for her finger. We leave Mauston and as we travel on to Lyndon, we pass through Otis Franke's multi-million acre estate. It so happens that on this particular day they are holding ceremonies in honor of the incorporation ofthe new city of Franke- ville. James Arens is Otis's right-hand man. Here is Lyndon! We find that William Donovan is a used-car salesman and that Judith Sivits has just started as his secretary. Lucy Fitzgerald owns a grocery store here in Lyndon, and from her we learn that Thomas Reigard has just been promoted to act as the assistant football coach in the Lyndon Station Junior High School. Janet Hopper is the owner of the Hopper Dude Ranch and Mary Ellen Forsyth is her head wrangler. What about Albert Lindner? Oh yes, he sings those charming commercials over WRDB. Alma Greendeer works in Portage. but we were not able to find out anything about her work. Wisconsin newspaper files supply us with information concerning the rest of the members of our class. Thomas Wright has just taken over as Miss Weathervane, and James Voborsky is off on a trapping expedition to the Antarctic. Clarence Miller. his technical adviser, communes with him via short-wave radio from his home in Silver Springs, Florida. Martha Whitewing is a great success in the revival of the play ROMONA. Audrey Martin is being consid- ered as the future Dean of Women at the University of Wisconsin. On the sports pages, we read that Ralph Garske, college basketball star who turned pro, is thinking of retiring. Dave Johnson will play for the Braves in their crucial game against the Dodgers. Jeannine Fitzgerald is that well- known lady wrestler, Tiny the Terrible. Ruth Kielstrup has gone on to fame with her basketball team Goose's Gos- lings. Her most famous player is Carol Sias. Among other news items we find that Amiel Hepp has literally rocked the world with his latest experiment. Joanne Miles is to appear as the new Ma Kettle, and Clarice Knutson has decided to retire from the Bat Lady so that she may star in a movie under the direction of Shawn Arntz. Guess what! Karl Dotzel has been selected as the new teenage movie idol. Edward Hosig has donated the services of his band for the 1966 M.l-l.S. Junior Prom. Robert Hoeft is his famous drummer and Bonita Jurkowski is his vocalist. While in Mauston, they will be the guests of George Granger and William Kudlas, joint caretakers of Castle Rock Park. According to the newspapers, some of our classmates fill positions in Milwaukee. Donna Beckwith is a buyer for the Boston Store, Bernadine Kaminski is a lawyer, Viola Darrow operates a party-catering service, and Carol Bites is the manager of a chain of restaurants.Betty Howland is in her employ. Darlene Krueger is a beautician. Elisabeth ?ook's big brown eyes adorn magazine advertisements, and Fred Leppin is the personal manager of a large diamond irm. Members of our class have managed to get into politics. Judith Larson has just been appointed ambassador to Russia. Her secretary-companion is Charlotte Runkel. John Craine, historian, specializes in U.S. History. Janice LaFrance assists him in gathering information. LaVonne Firlus is a news commentator. Howard Dary is in the tun- ning for state senator. We check through our list to see whom we have omitted. Yes, June Holden. What about her? Of course, she is responsible for keeping the cowboy alive despite the onslaught of the space man opposition which Eric Blixt heads. Betty Hinrichs is the wife of a famous Paris designer and, by the way, is his favorite model. After giving up a life of glamour, Tearon Rose has retired to her farm. Duane Pfaff writes stories for illustrated comics.. Lorelei McNown is secluded in the Rocky Mountains and is writing a new novel. Working in a large Madison hospital are Jennie Ran- dall and Cherie Mason. Carol Davis is a stewardess for TWA. What about the Armed Forces? Lawrence Walsh is a carefree man in the army. and Patricia Strack is a WAC. Ronald Ekern is a test pilot for the Air Force. lt is rumored that if he ever goes to the moon, he will take Dan Walt- man along with him. Q Miss Carol Cook is running a fashionable girls' school. Fred Schukis is a learned professor in an eastern military academy. Patricia Marshall intends to send all of her children to these schools. We must move on. At last he has found us. Our meter has run out. Here comes the cop. It is Clayton Schultz, a member of the Lyndon Station Police Force. And so, we find all of our former friends very busy. Who knows to what heights they will soar in another ten years. I8 r r 'Wwe -3 F 5' ! 43 ' V Q..-f I V 'Z VW' , f 1 ' I ' fix K . 'JL' Q -Q . Because of penalties, two of the four times that Mauston crossed the goal line were nullified. Mauston 13---Portage 6 With Captain Tom Wright in the lead, the Golden Eagles upset the favored Portage team to the tune of 13-6. Receiving on the first play, the Portage quarterback fumbled as he tried the center of the Maus ton wall and was met with bone-crushing tackle by Granger, Wright, and Feldman. Portage scored inthe second period, and at the half Mauston was ahead. Late in the third quarter, Reigard bulled offtackel and ran 15 yards for the final score. Outstanding ball was played by Leppin, Kudlas, Knutzen, Granger, Wright, and Gar- ske. Mauston 13--Tomah 19 Although defeated, Mauston played one of its best games, of the year. Mauston was hampered for the injured players, Knutzen, Wright, and Garske, saw very limited action. Mauston 14---Viroqua 6 Viroqua was defeated by a hard- charging Mauston defensive line.
