HAMMER A Hlstory of Mauston Hlgh School HENEVER anyone attempts to wrlte a hlstory of any fund he must frrst declde what will be mcluded and what left out of the account I have found myself oblrged to omrt many ltems of mterest from the present ac count and to chronlcle ln brief form the matenals selected The first bulldlng rn Mauston to be erected and OCCUplCd by a whlte man was bullt rn I837 The dam was burlt ln 1842 the ongmal havrng been bullt ln ISS3 at a cost of 518000 whlle the addltron was completed ln 1898 at a cost of 3514000 The new hrgh school burldmg cost S42 000 and was first occu pled m Aprrl l9l 5 The hlgh school was organlzed ln 1876 wlth W G Spence as prmcrpal The frrst class to graduate conslsted of G H Wrnsor E G Temple E H Bacon and C W Starling who completed the course of and permanent whrte settle ment was mamtalned from that tlme Durlng the year of l85l the hrst school housem uneau Countywas bullt at Stewart Settlement while the first school house to be bullt rn Mauston drd not appear till I854 Dur lng that year lt appears there were two schools bullt rn Mauston one ln lower town and one on the land now occupied by Mr W D Fletcher as a resldence My mformants are rn clrsagree ment as to whlch bulldmg was bullt first The next year a school blllldlng was burlt on land now owned by Mr James Tlmbers on the slte of the Schroeder Dry Goods Companys store About the year of l860 a large frame bulldlng was constructed on the ground now occupled by our school Sev eral years later an addrtron was added to accom modate the mcreased number of puprls The orrgmal bulldlng IS now used as a hotel belng the present Central House whlle the addltlon now forms Mr Holgate s barber shop The present whxte brrck bulldmg IS composed of two parts PROF C W study ln I878 Mr M L Bunnell the only gradu ate the next year finrshed ln l879 and to date Apnl I9I 6 there have been three hundred seventy elght graduates There have been twelve prmcrpals durrng the forty years the hlgh school has been organlzed as follows W G Spence P R Barnes P Gallger John Ander son H J Evans G S Grubb W L Morrison A H Fletcher W E Utten dorfer W E Green W W Clark and C W Mc Nown The progress of the school M NOWN has at all tlmes been sub stantral and the present en rollment of 203 rs the result of a steady growth though the erectron of the present bulldrng has doubtless not been a negllglble factor ln the lncrease of twenty two per cent over last year s enrollment The people of this commumty are certalnly to be congratulated on the possesslon of such a splen drd structure llght well heated samtary modern comfortable fire proof wlth sufficlent room for the mtroductlon of such new worlc as the development of the future show to be necessary and deslrable U I . . - X , , 3's'x'x'Q . . . - sfxfx'x'v , . . 9 1 '- - , , . . . - , . . , . . , . , . . . . , I ' I I I . y ' 0 ,- I - . 1 C ' , 1, D ' 4 D , ' ,, f . . - . , . . , . . , J. . , - . . . 9 ' - 1 ' ' . 1 ' ' 1 ' ' . , . . , . . , . , Y . - .
