When we began school, we did not know how big a future lay ahead of us. In the first few years of school we studied hard and enjoyed all the activities that occurred. In the eighth grade, we had a very exciting trip. We visited Raleigh and saw all the famous sites.y The next year we were dignified freshmen, very happy to know that we had at last arrived in high school. We had all looked forward to entering high school, because of the many activities in which we could take part. Some of us became ball players and many of us cheerleaders. In the tenth grade we had a class party chaperoned by our homeroom teacher, Mr. Bryant Tripp. We had a mar- velous time. Mr. Tripp always did love those parties. In our Junior year our most exciting experience was our Junior- Senior Banquet. I think everyone, even our practice teachers, Mr. Sutton and Mr. Eggleston, enjoyed preparing for this. It would have never been a big success if it had not been for Mrs. Allen, our Junior sponsor. Now, at last, we have reached our long awaited year. We have entered our Senior year with the determination of being a great success in the future. Yes, it has been good to be here in Maury High School for these twelve years. We will never forget the wonderful teachers and friends that we have had. We hope that the rising seniors will be able to say that they have enjoyed their school days at Maury High School as we have enjoyed them. The Seniors of ' 61 Betty Murphrey Patricia Carraway Historians 12 Prophecy On December 6, 1971, FREDDIE MEADOWS received a special delivery letter at her office in the Meadows- Carravvay Interior Decorating House, Inc. , in New York City. She was quite surprised to learn from the return address that it was from LINDA HARRELL Stepps, a hometown girl who had won a 2 weeks ' visit to New York. Linda asked Freddie to have dinner with her at Sardi ' s the following evening. Freddie and her friend and business partner, ELLEN CARRAWAY, met Linda for dinner the next evening. Naturally the conversation turned to their high school days back at old MHS. From the conversation the girls gained the following information: Soon after graduation GENE ALBRITTON became a tobacco auctioneer. After many years of auctioneering his tongue became so twisted that no one could understand him. He is now 7 teaching French at the Central High School. BILLY BEAMAN graduated from UNC and became head coach at his old alma mater. Billy is married and has two very cute boys! After much hard studying JIMMY CASH became an artist. Jimmy said the most difficult task for him was learning to draw a straight line with the aid of a ruler. Jimmy is an illustrator for the Hunter Publishing Company. BILLY HILL is now a famous millionaire in Hollywood and answers to the name of Lover Boy. “ It seems that JANIES FAULKNER liked Waves so well that after graduation he decided to join the Navy 7 and decided later on to make it a career. SHELBY MOORE studied for many years and became a famous lawyer. She has just convicted America ' s most notorious gangster, A1 Capone, III. BOBBY MURPHREY became an English professor at Woman ' s College. Bobby says his only weakness is girls! Mrs. James Stallings, the former ROSE HEATH, now owns and operates a beauty salon in Ormonds ville. She specializes in giving permanents to bald-headed men. After much encouragement and help from Mrs. Allen, KAY VANDIFORD became a shorthand teacher. She says one of her most promising students is Charles Allen, her former teacher ' s son. Mrs. Steve Vandiford, the former BARBARA CROOM, is now 7 living on a farm near Maury. Barbara and Steve have two lovely children. KAY SUGG and MARGARET ROGERSON have a comedy prog ram on radio station WOOW. The name of the program is Maggie and Kate. MARGIE MAYO married soon after graduation. She has four sets of twins. Margie always did like big families. JULIAN JONES became a famous race car driver. He has won many races, including the Darlington ' 500. ' Julian specializes in dragging his foot instead of using the brake. In high school, BETTY MURPHREY ahvays wanted to fly an airplane. Her wish never came true, but she ' s doing the next best thing — she ' s a trapeze artist. She is know 7 n as The Flying Chasis. PATRICIA CARRAWAY is now a hell driver at the State Fair in Rale igh. She is known as The Maniac-on-a- Pontiac. It seems that FLETCHER LEE became a miser. He has a very- bad limp. They say the reason for this is because he caities so much money in the toe of his shoes. BOBBY CARRAWAY is now 7 a popular singer in a nightclub in Hawaii. He got his start by singing Blue Hawaii at the Junior- Senior banquet. He now sings to the merry tune of $450 a week. MARY DAIL became an army nurse. She is one of the best-known nurses anywhere. She promises to cure you or kill you. After graduating, BETTY HARDEE and her family moved to California where her husband is now 7 the warden at Alcatraz. BILLY HUMBLES and EDWARD MOORE are the proud owners of a gambling casino in Las Vegas. Billy and Edward liked it so much in school that they decided to make it their career. LINWOOD DAUGHERTY is doing well for himself in Hollywood. He has had much success in his role as Tarzan. After dinner the girls bade Linda good-by and wished her a nice trip and a Merry 7 Christmas.
