CLASS PROPHECY I, Comolia May, am returning to my home in the rural district of Hookerton. I shall soon return to Kinston where I am teaching the fourth grade. While I was unpacking the contents of my old trunk, I found a copy of the Maury Mecca. As I turned the pages, I thought about my old classmates. They appeared to me as they had been on the night of our graduation, just seven short years ago. Today Ann Faulkner is a secretary for a big firm in Raleigh. Garnet Hedgepeth is living in the state of Washington with her husband who is in the Air Force. Nannie Mae Sugg is at home for a visit after nursing at Rex Hospital. Harriet Wade is living in Asheville where she is a secretary. David May has just returned from the Army and is living near Lizzie. Ada Moore is now happily married and living near Maury. Mary Lou Moye has just gone back to Charlotte where she is keeping books. Jimmy Meadows is operating a large farm near Ormondsville. Hiram Murphy has stopped farming and is now in the Army. Edgar Lowe has been working at the Air Base ever since graduation. Lois Braxton has just returned to Duke Hospital, where she has been nursing for several years. Billy Garris has just completed his training and received his Wings in the Air Force. Comolia May Prophet CLASS HISTORY As the school year draws to a close, we the class of 1953-54, find ourselves seniors. The reality of it dawns on us, and along with a feeling of joy and thankfulness we feel a tinge of re- gret. Then before we know it, our thoughts begin to wander back through the years. In 1950 Maury High School was a scene of much confusion for thirty-eight freshmen. We were new in high school and found it very different from the grammar grades. Mr. Garland Little was our homeroom teacher. Under the guidance of our teachers we “pulled through” our first year in high school. As school started again we entered as sophomores. We had lost some of our members, but part of us were determined to go on and make good. This year we were under the leadership of Mr. Little again. In 1952 we were juniors. Our classes were getting smaller. Miss Peggy Anderson was in charge this year. Our Class officers were: President - Hiram Murphy, Vice -President - Jean Moore, Secretary and Treasurer - David May, and Reporter - Comolia May. Everyone enjoyed giving the Junior Play, a comedy entitled, “Here Comes Charlie,” presented in March. Our banquet was held in the Recreation Room of the Methodist Church. We used “Stardust” for our theme. Our fingers were measured and we got our class rings at the beginning of the Senior year. As September rolled around again we entered high school for the last time. This year we had a new gymnasium and cafeteria. Our class officers were: President - Garnet Hedgepeth, Vice President - Anne Faulkner, Secretary - David May, Treasurer - Mary Lou Moye, and Reporter - Comolia May. We elected our mascots. Beverly Meadows and Johnny Stocks. On October 27 we took our first historical trip in high school to Williamsburg, Virginia. We pre- sented our Senior Play, “Under Western Skies, ” December 3. For our class colors, flower, and motto we chose; yellow and green, yellow rose, and “Success - work, faith, ambition.” Mrs. Graham Olive was our senior advisor. Now as the Senior year nears its end we are looking forward to - Washington Trip, Junior- Senior Banquet, Senior Day at E. C. C., and many more wonderful events preceding graduation. Our record here is finished, but our experiences and mishaps will always be cherished in our memories. The ideals, facts, and things we have gained through our years at Maury High will guide us in years to come. We wish to express our sincere thanks to the faculty and our parents for being so patient and helpful through our school years. May we live up to our ex- pectations and our own dreams.
