Class Hfstorq As the school term, 1952-53, nears its end, we, the senior class of ' 53, look back and recall some of the most important events of our high schools days. In the fall of ’49, we, a very lively and enthusiastic group of sixty “green” freshmen, entered the Maury High School. Besides entering high school with all its newness, we also experienced another big change. Since we first entered school through the eighth grade we were under the leadership of one principal, Mr. R. E. Williford, but now we were to have a new one, Mr. Jaspher L. Lewis. We were such a large group we were divided into two classes, the boys under Mr. Howell and the girls under Mrs. Harriet James. Under the splendid guidance of these homeroom teachers w ' e “pulled through” our first year of high school. Another school year began and we were sophomores. We were still divided into two classes, the boys under Mr. Howell again and the girls under Miss Lou Lane. 1951 and we were juniors! This year we ordered our class rings, gave our Junior play, and gave the Junior-Senior Banquet. We presented our play “No Bride For The Groom” in December. We held our banquet in the Snow Hill American Legion Building. We used “In An Old Dutch Garden” for our theme. We chose the following officers to lead us: Bobby Meadows — President, Joe Jones — Vice-President, Edith Horne — Secretary, Faye Wooten — Treasurer, and Eloise Bowen — Reporter. Mrs. Margaret Jones was our homeroom instructor. We also had another change of principals, Mr. D. G. Whitford replaced Mr. Lewis. Seniors! Yes, we finally made it after a long hard struggle with twenty-seven dignified students. We really started this year off with a bang. We received our long awaited class rings the second day of school. For class officers we chose: Joe Jones— President, Oscar Ross — Vice-President, Ann Beaman — Secretary, Faye Wooten — Treasurer, and Bobby Meadows — Reporter. On October 24 we took our first historical trip in high school to Williamsburg, Virginia. We presented our Senior play, “The Goof From Gopher Gulch,” December 12. As a gift to the school we left stage scenery. For class colors, flower, and motto we chose; pink and green, the rose , and “The door of success is labeled ‘push’.” Mrs. Graham Olive was our senior advisor. Now as our Senior year comes to close we are looking forward with great anticipation to — “Washington Trip,” “Junior-Senior Banquet,” “Senior Day at E. c. c.,” and the many more wonderful events preceding the most important event of all “graduation.” As we approach graduation and begin to build “our place” in the outside world we sincerely thank our parents and teachers for so patiently working with us and helping us build our first foundation in life so that we, as the future businessmen, farmers, and homemakers, will be better citizens helping to build a better community, which in turn will make a better nation. May we strive for higher goals. The Seniors of ' 53 Edith Horne Historian 8th grade FIRST ROW. Left to Right: Bobby Nethercutt. Linzia Bunn. Shirley Grizzard, Mary F. Jones, Kenneth Johnson.
