COLORS Pink and Green MOTTO The Door to Success is Labeled “PUSH FLOWER Pink Rose Class Prophecq I, Faj’e Wooten, after having been in Kinston working as a clerk-typist had just returned to my home at Maury. While unpacking, I found an old Maury Mecca in the bottom of my trunk. Opening the Maury Mecca and seeing the familiar faces of my classmates, I let my mind wander back over ten short years to the night of our graduation. It seemed only a short time since we were laughing and talking together. Today, although we are no longer together, each of my classmates is remembered by me. Down in Texas, Jo Ann Hedgepeth and Ann Beaman are living happily with their husbands who are in the United States Air Force. Already they have seen much of the United States and are hoping to see more of it. At State College, tve see Willie Palmer Faulkner walking across the campus. He has served eight years in the army and is now preparing himself for a successful farming life. In Del Rio, Cuba, Bonnie Ruth Rouse is doing a great work as a missionary. Erma Johnson is one of Raleigh’s more successful beauty operators. Virginia Dare Stocks has just moved to Snow Hill where she is kept busy keeping house for her husband. Until this time she has done outstanding work as an Air Force Nurse. In Chicago, Joe Jones is a noted dentist. Ruth Graves is kept busy as his secretary. Marietta Trippe is happily married and is living in Grifton where she frequently entertains her bridge club. Evonne Smith is working with a small firm in Greenville doing general office obby Meadows is a millionaire living in Washington, D. C. where he works with the F. B, I. just to pass away his time. Bill Carroll and his family are living in Little Washington where he is a well known commercial pilot. Since his graduation he has been in the Air Force. At San Antonio, Texas, Robert Lee Moye and Joseph Pippin are enjoying themselves in the Air Force, cleaning ash trays for officers. After getting out of the Navy, Edwin Earl Jones has settled down on a farm near Lizzie. On a farm near 4-Way Albert Wood and his family have a cute home in which they hope to remain the rest of their days. Ruth Murphery is a trained nurse. She received her training in Wilmington. In Charlotte, Edith Horne is working with the F, B. I, Until four years ago she was a telephone operator. Ray Beaman is in the Air Force. He says he will settle down when he gets old enough. Herman Croom is an agriculture teacher at Maury. He graduated from State with high honors. Jackie Jones is also teaching at Maury. At E. C. C. she majored in Home Ec. and has been teaching it at Maury ever since. Oscar Ross has been lucky. He managed to stay out of service and is now a radio announcer in Raleigh. He has a nice home on Hillsboro Street where he and his wife and children live. We see Ellen Johnson living on a farm. She isn’t rich, but she is making enough money to live on, and any time she feels like taking a vacation she is free to do so. James Carraway is married and living in the house with his parents. They live on a farm just outside of Maury. Though we are lost and gone forever, we are going to present to the leftover scholars a few of our treas- ured belongings — the ones we can do without. We will and bequeath our gratitude and undying devotion to our parents who have so patiently shared these years’ experience with us. To our faculty goes a year’s supply of aspirin, arsenic, and Hadacol. Compli- ments of the Class of ' 53. To Mrs. Olive, our class teacher, we will her a one way ticket to Kalamozoo, since she speaks of its so much. Ann Beaman wills her neat little figure and doll-like appearance to Harriet Wade. Joseph Pippin leaves to David May his sense of humor and laughter. James Carraway wills his ability to keep a secret to Mary Lou Moye. Ruth Murphery wills her good-looking frame with its accessories to Eunice Shackleford. Ruth Graves wills her cuteness and half her freckles to Evelyn Tyson. Oscar Ross wills his curly hair to Edgar Lowe. Jackie Jones wills her never-to-be-forgotten smile to Nannie Mae Suggs to carry on the tradition of friendship. Ray Beaman leaves his 6 ' 2 to Kermit Bunn, an advantage to playing basket- ball. Joe Jones wills his nickname “Brains” to Hiriam Murphery. Erma Johnson leaves her pleasing personality to Billy Turnage, hoping that he will use it. Jo Ann Hedgepeth wills her Athletic Skill to Ann Faulkner, who is a most deserving receiver. Ellen Johnson leaves her ambitious nature to Ada Moore. Be sure and take the right road Ada. Bill Carroll wills his Firey Temper to Jimmie Meadows. Don’t let it over take you Jimmie. Bonnie Rouse wills her voice to Dolly Jones, so that she can be heard in Mrs. Olive’s English Class. Robert Lee Moye wills his walk to Billy Garris. Edith Horne wills her pug-nose to anyone who would like it. Virginia Stocks wills her never tiring talking nature to Comolia May. Willie Faulkner wills his cute ways and friendliness to the many deserving Juniors. Marietta Tripp Spikes leaves her ability in art to Irene Bowen. Eloise Bowen wills “Just” 2 pounds and 3 ounces of her weigth to Alice Faye Moye, so she will have more prospect of catching a boyfriend. Bobby Meadows wills his way of getting along with people to Jean Davis. Evonne Smith wills her quietness to Lula Moore. Faye Wooten wills her long curled up eye lashes to Pat Wood. Herman Croom wills all of his overweight to Bobby McLawhorn. Albert Wood wills his way with the “wimmin” to Carson Beaman. Edwin Earl Jones wills his School Bus to Lawrence Moye with the hope that he won’t be late everyday. And to the rest of you— well, we just leave you, hnd what we don’t give you, you can take! And I, on this, the fifteen day of January, in the year of our Lord, one thousand, nine hundred and fifty-three, do sign and seal this testament, as my last official act and bequeath it to the Beta Club for publication — Amen. Jo Ann Hedgepeth Testatrix Page Twenty-Six Class Hfstorq As the school term, 1952-53, nears its end, we, the senior class of ' 53, look back and recall some of the most important events of our high schools days. In the fall of ’49, we, a very lively and enthusiastic group of sixty “green” freshmen, entered the Maury High School. Besides entering high school with all its newness, we also experienced another big change. Since we first entered school through the eighth grade we were under the leadership of one principal, Mr. R. E. Williford, but now we were to have a new one, Mr. Jaspher L. Lewis. We were such a large group we were divided into two classes, the boys under Mr. Howell and the girls under Mrs. Harriet James. Under the splendid guidance of these homeroom teachers w ' e “pulled through” our first year of high school. Another school year began and we were sophomores. We were still divided into two classes, the boys under Mr. Howell again and the girls under Miss Lou Lane. 1951 and we were juniors! This year we ordered our class rings, gave our Junior play, and gave the Junior-Senior Banquet. We presented our play “No Bride For The Groom” in December. We held our banquet in the Snow Hill American Legion Building. We used “In An Old Dutch Garden” for our theme. We chose the following officers to lead us: Bobby Meadows — President, Joe Jones — Vice-President, Edith Horne — Secretary, Faye Wooten — Treasurer, and Eloise Bowen — Reporter. Mrs. Margaret Jones was our homeroom instructor. We also had another change of principals, Mr. D. G. Whitford replaced Mr. Lewis. Seniors! Yes, we finally made it after a long hard struggle with twenty-seven dignified students. We really started this year off with a bang. We received our long awaited class rings the second day of school. For class officers we chose: Joe Jones— President, Oscar Ross — Vice-President, Ann Beaman — Secretary, Faye Wooten — Treasurer, and Bobby Meadows — Reporter. On October 24 we took our first historical trip in high school to Williamsburg, Virginia. We presented our Senior play, “The Goof From Gopher Gulch,” December 12. As a gift to the school we left stage scenery. For class colors, flower, and motto we chose; pink and green, the rose , and “The door of success is labeled ‘push’.” Mrs. Graham Olive was our senior advisor. Now as our Senior year comes to close we are looking forward with great anticipation to — “Washington Trip,” “Junior-Senior Banquet,” “Senior Day at E. c. c.,” and the many more wonderful events preceding the most important event of all “graduation.” As we approach graduation and begin to build “our place” in the outside world we sincerely thank our parents and teachers for so patiently working with us and helping us build our first foundation in life so that we, as the future businessmen, farmers, and homemakers, will be better citizens helping to build a better community, which in turn will make a better nation. May we strive for higher goals. The Seniors of ' 53 Edith Horne Historian 8th grade FIRST ROW. Left to Right: Bobby Nethercutt. Linzia Bunn. Shirley Grizzard, Mary F. Jones, Kenneth Johnson.
