What's this! Many Mauryites ar o u n d school have interesting and intriguing hobbies, some of which we have chosen to put in your Commodore in order that you may become acquainted with them. These hobbies range all the way from card collecting to practicing Indian lore and Magic. Many of the students have been working with their hobbies as long as seven years. We have oniy to delve into the outside lives ot our fellow-students and we soon tind many interesting facts which would have otherwise been hidden from us tore-ver. of ote Q G u Z it 3 A . X I 4 Gerald Einhorn, a member ol the Maury Band and Orchestra. and also the Nor- folk Symphony Orchestra, makes music his chiel interest. He plays iirst comet tor the Band and first trumpet tor the Symphony Orchestra. For three suc- cessive years he has held lirst chair in the all State Band and lor two years he has won first division and second divi- sion in the District Music Competition Festival. There is no doubt in our minds that Gerald will go lar with his talents. Ruth Harrell, valedictorian ol the Ianu- ary senior class, took high honors in the tield ol science. This year Maury named Ruth most outstanding student in science and through this she was given the Bausch and Lomb award. She re- ceived a trip to Rochester, New York. in order to compete for the Bausch and Lomb scholarship ot S3,2U0.00. EWG. I9

v .q. 4. ? : L F3 Beware! There's a lepidopterist in Maury! Now don't be frightened Commodores: he's iust Iohr King. His hobby is collecting butterflies for vari- ous decorative and artistic uses. Seventy-five different types can be found in his collection, some of which were extremely difficult to capture. His butterflies are truly beautiful and valuable. What have we here? Arthur Old displays his unusual and interesting hobby-soil collecting. Arthur. who started his collection in the spring of 1940, has soil from forty-eight states, the District of Columbia. and seven Canadian Provinces: British Columbia. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario. Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Magic-What a thrilling hobby! Lloyd Ienkins has worked with magic for personal and business Magic Shows. They pe seven years and is now manager of the Shandini rform for charity organiza- tions and at places of entertainment. Lloyd does some magic tricks and clowns for the show. He plans to make magic his profession. Presto- Who can tell! Frank Reid, Billy Taylor, Iohn Herbert, and Preston Tyree are four of the twenty-five members of the Indian Lore Club headed by Mickey Warner of William and Mary. These boys have been prac- ticing lndian Lore for about three years. Meet- ings are held on Wednesday nights at which time the members learn Indian customs, dances and chants Bunting Brown and Maurice Doumar have been collecting stamps for several years. During this time they have managed to obtain German. Mex- ican, Canadian, Indian, Austrian. Italian. Aus- tralian, and English stamps. All in all their total collections amount to Bunting and Maurice interesting hobby, but in later years become several thousand stamps. have not only found an one which will, no doubt, valuable. 59 as W NA in 'r 1'
