O7,ElA.7'O'Z N the desert sands, in the steep and treacherous mountain passes of Europe, on the beach heads of the Pacific, in the air above enemy territory, Americans are lighting-their jaws clenched with grim determination. Only yesterday these same men and women walked the halls of Maury. Since then, they have learned one of life's greatest lessons-that time is only as valuable as the use We make of it. They learned the hard way-lying in fox holes, wondering if the next shell would have their name on it-flying through the dead of night Waiting for the search lights to find them. And the lesson became a truth indelibly engraved upon their faces. Through their actions, its significance has been transmitted to us on the home front. The 1944 Commodore endeavors to show that the students of Maury have taken to heart this lesson so bitterly learned and have attempted to make the brief space of time allotted to them count for victory.

'jo ficfwazcf Sfanky a distinguished gentleman, with piercing eyes, a dry humor, and a helping hand, We dedicate The Commodore of 1944. As the former Supervisor of high schools, he became a well-loved visitor to the class rooms of Maury, where he would listen with quiet attention or add his bit to the discussion in progress. Today finds him Superintendent of the Norfolk Public School System. With the wisdom of the scholar, he has become a living example of a man who is con- scious of the value of time. Realizing that, in the crisis of war, his schools are a potent agency for victory, he uses every possible opportunity to inspire his teachers and their students to think, Work, and strive toward final triumph. The Commodore of 1944 salutes him.
