Only yesterday these same men and women walked the halls of Maury. Since then, they have learned one of life's greatest lessons-that time is only as valuable as the use We make of it. They learned the hard way-lying in fox holes, wondering if the next shell would have their name on it-flying through the dead of night Waiting for the search lights to find them. And the lesson became a truth indelibly engraved upon their faces. Through their actions, its significance has been transmitted to us on the home front. The 1944 Commodore endeavors to show that the students of Maury have taken to heart this lesson so bitterly learned and have attempted to make the brief space of time allotted to them count for victory. As the former Supervisor of high schools, he became a well-loved visitor to the class rooms of Maury, where he would listen with quiet attention or add his bit to the discussion in progress. Today finds him Superintendent of the Norfolk Public School System. With the wisdom of the scholar, he has become a living example of a man who is con- scious of the value of time. Realizing that, in the crisis of war, his schools are a potent agency for victory, he uses every possible opportunity to inspire his teachers and their students to think, Work, and strive toward final triumph. President SHIRLEY GORNTCJ Vice-President Amee MURRAY .......... Serrelmy MCJRTON JEFFERSON SAUNDERS Treasurer I I I Saunders Murray Gornto Paul anuary Class History One rainy day in January, in the year 1941, we, the class of '44, made our way from Junior High School to the Maury auditorium with eager feet and excited hearts, where Mr. Old gave us the inside dope on the razzing-such as the elevator and the third floor lunchroom. Scared to death, we struggled through the first week carrying stacks of books and getting lost. Soon, through joining the various clubs and entering into the sports, we began to feel a part of dear old Maury. VVith fall came the football season and Granby's second victory over Maury. What a wonderful feeling it was in 1942 when we found ourselves Juniors and no longer the babies of the school! lt was in this year that the honor study halls, later student study halls began. Don't you remember that this year Maury scored yer first victory over Granby .... the Illaury Newt was discontinued. . . . and several teachers joined the armed services? Ah! At last we were Seniors and could finally enjoy the privilege of attending the long awaited Valentine Program with such january Seniors as Stanely Paul, Margaret Anne Klasman, Dubby Vvynne, Frances Fowlkes, and Eva Wright. Then came our last Maury Merry Ministrels in which for the First time in the history of the Ministrels the girls had a black- face act of their own because more boys were being drafted everyday. We chose our very own class oHicers in May: Stanley Paul, president, Shirley Gornto, vice-presidentg Alice Murray, secretary, Morton Saunders, treasurer. Had it not been for the guidance and ready councilship of our sponsor, Miss Carolea Harris, we never could have conquered the hardships and joys of three years' stay at Maury. As we entered the last half of our Senior year, we realized this was the beginning of the end of our high school days. Maury had a good football team, winning over Granby a second time. The Fashion Show went off with no mishaps, with Shirley Gornto, Morton Saunders, Joyce Ellis, and Dickson Moore representing our class. This term brought about the loss of several of our boys to Uncle Sam, among whom were Dubby VVynne, voted most popular boy in the Hall of Fame, and Donald Keller. As we go, we take with us Maury's drum-majorettes, Joyce Ellis and Becky Hilliard. It was, also, during this term that we lost our beloved assistant-principal, Mr. F. Old, who has been promoted to the Supervisor ol Vocational Training in the public schools. We welcome, however, Mr. B. T. Tatem, his successor, and wish him all the luck and popularity of his predecessor. With all of these memories embedded in our minds, we take our leave of Maury, undaunted by the uncertainty of the future. ANN Douoms -loNEs ...4 Bisrsv BROWN ...... June Class History Brown 4 . . .Prcsidcnl Vice-Pfwiflerzt Secretary . . . Treasurer We are the class of '44, Never will he forgotten that eventful day in September when we as sophomores entered the doors of Maury High School with chins held high and hearts bezltin fast Our principals and teachers were a great help and inspiration to us. The guiding hand of Mr Bristow, Mr. Old and Miss Harris certainly kept us going. June Class HiSt0fy-Continued In 1941 we began our first term at Maury. Many events occurred which will always hold a firm place in our memory. With our beneficial friend and sponsor, Miss Carolea Harris, we elected our first class officers. Richard Bugg was elected president, Elizabeth Ann Brown was elected vice-president. Florence Schonholt held the position of secretary and Frank Wise that of treasurer. However wonderful things appeared we did have our troubles, but we carried on. With the crisp, cool days of autumn came our spirit for football. As usual, the Commodores proved them- selves outstanding. Then the weeks passed by bringing that fateful seventh day of December' and we as American citizens realized that after Pearl Harbor we must take our part in the war. 9 The Sophomore party, given by the numerous organizations of Maury, to our class, was a novelty and a valuable new attraction. Besides these activities our class contributed in various ways to the school life. Among us are cheer leaders, athletes, and honor-roll students. Then June approached and with it came examinations. Upon accomplishing one step of our goal, we looked ahead to our Junior year so full of promises unfulfilled. As Juniors we became more dignified and more confident in ourselves. With still more pleasure and excitement we chose Frank Wise for president and Faye Ford for vice-president. Then, for secretary again, Florence Schonholt serving with Dorisleigh Ferebee as treasurer. In the future we will recall again the noise of cow bells and the hoarse shouts which encouraged our figures in the blue and gold on to victory. That year, the Commodores' victory over Granby in their annual battle was a great joy to all. We shall also remember the thrill when Saxie Dowell and his Naval Air Station Band played for us. Neither shall we forget the new honor study halls which many of us assisted with in making a success. With the Seniors we cooperated in spreading a Student Government throughout the school. However, with a great deal of sadness, we saw a few of our classmates drop out to join our armed forces, and so making the war a still greater part of our lives. Nevertheless, we carried on with the buying of bonds and stamps. The coming of spring saw many of us take part in the language tournaments and contests in which we always win high honors. The arrival of the minstrel show aroused us to take part. Many blacked their faces and entertained us with parts we all enjoyed. Then came examinations with their trials and tribulations. Yet we faced them with a grim determination to greet the prospects of the final and most glorious year. We assisted with graduation with a realization that brought us closer to June of '44. As fine Seniors we accepted our part whole-heartedly. Officers of the Senior Class were Frank Wise, Faye Ford, Ann Douglas Jones, and Elizabeth Ann Brown. The sale of stamps and bonds in the school became our greatest thought as the importance of the war increased more and more in our minds. It was now our turn to take part in the Fashion Show and Valentine Program as well as the Minstrel Show. And so we close our history with the proud but sad moment of graduation. We bid farewell not only to our school but also to the many of us who will enter the armed forces of America. And in leaving we want to say-Godspeed on your journey to success. 'lvl'l,Il.l'lH't'7' Miss Ifkaness HARDY. .. , . ..N'pm1.tm' Class History As another year draws to its close, let us pause a moment to look back upon the past. 'l'his year has been a memorable one, in which the Junior Class has played an active part. lt is Fitting, therefore, that we review the exploits of our illustrious members. To start the year oil' right, we elected Grover Outland president, supported by john Graf' as vice-president, Dorothy Branham as secretary, and Mary Townsend as treasurer, all of whom have shown themselves to be capable and industrious. After the summer's scorching heat, we welcomed the cool, crisp fall days and the great football season that soon moved into full swing. W'ith flamboyant blue and gold ribbons, waving yellow chrysanthemums, and spirits flying high, we turned out to cheer our Alma Mater on to victory and glory. Who led those cheers? VVhy, juniors Velma Phillips, Myra lBittyJ lfensterwald, Dot Hopper, Iris Gretis, Frances Barton, and Mary Lee Lawson. Out there on the field you might have found husky tackle Grover Uutland and the galloping backs Clittord Peacock and Ronnie Miller. When basketball season rolled around, Paul l.ipkin, Peewee Contrada, and .-Xl Bernstein played a bang-up game on the -lay Vees. As for track, you should have seen Dick Parkins' smoke when he tore away in the four-forty or the two-twenty dashes or the low hurdles. nlaiitmryi 28, 194-1-fortunate day for lucky seniors! Yet the strenuous task of getting those nervous seniors properly dressed and herded in order to file sedately down the aisles toward their diplcnias deyelopcd upon the capable juniors. Ushers .lean Altizer, Dorothy Branham, Nancy Hardiman, Joanne Martin, Anne Curtis, Ann Johnson, Shirley Powell, together with Gus Armeniox, Henry Belcher, l.awrence Brenner, joseph Cloud, George Conwell, lsaac Copeland, Robert Cum- mings, .Iohn Ellis, .lohn Graf, Richard Guilford, Paul Harrison, Charlton Hickman, George Hogan, Houston Hughes, lN'ilson King, VVilbur Marshall, Ronald Miller, Grover Outland, VVilson Petty, Herbert Phillips, Morton Ronick, Paul Smith, and Seldon Tatum, acquitted themselves in this without any major diH'iculties. Remember those mornings when we scrambled for the Mdllill' News, to see who was in the gossip column? lncidentally, we would not have received those papers had it not been for the efforts of Herbert Philips, circulation manager. Perhaps on the front page we might discover an article by ,lean Bishop, our roving reporter, inside, perhaps a snappy write-up by Leonard Frieden. The swing band, practicing every morning, holding try-outs and rehearsals, can mean only one thing-Minstrelsl Remember Frank CGene Krupaj Ficarra on the drums, with Eloise Bradner as vocalist, the lilting melodies sung by Florence VVilkins, endgirls Keeter Young and Betty Nash, endmen Albert Bisese, Grover Outland, John Gruenke, and Ray Bateman? Remember the girls swooning when Ray Niblack and Earl Davis sang? The male population did likewise when lovely Shirley Powell glided like a wispy dream across-stage in her ballet. Did you wonder why it was that Velma Phillips was rushing around with that harried expression on her face? Velma was chairman of costumes-a job an octopus would find painful to perform. Ushers? Yes, Chairman Wilbur Marshall handled that busy assignment, aided efficiently by Herbert Philips, his assistant chairman, and Gus Armeniox, joseph Banks, Robert Banks, Edward Burdell, Frederick Cressman, George Conwell, James Cox, Robert Cummings, Frank East, John Ellis, Charlton Hickman, Ronald Miller, VVilson Petty, Eugene Verhaagen, Alley Smith, Seldon Tatum, Guy Wilkins, and Elvin VVilson. We'll never forget Miss Frances Hardy, our sponsor, who has seen us through all our endeavors and who has been our guiding light for two years. To her we all owe a vote of thanks. She has our lasting gratitude. Poised on the threshhold of our final year at Maury, with two happy, fruitful years behind us, we look forward to the brightest of futures as Seniors. ll EAN CANoi.Es. We were Sophmrmores, we will he Juniors! How Very pleasant it is just to write the shining word that means we have struggled through one year of high school life at Maury! We can still shudder realistically at some ofthe happenings of our past year. When we came to Maury for the first time, we came on slow, lagging feet-dreading our first meeting with our classmates, teachers, and principals, but thrilling from head tc toe with gladness at the thought of heing students in Maury at last. Even though we had a long, hard three-year journey to pass we had at last arrived. Class History-Continued After being herded into the auditorium the first thing we noticed was that the seats were frightfully hard, and that some very formidable people sat on the stage eyeing us. We were soon put at ease by Mr. Old and sent to our respective classes where, after a few days full ofmistakes and fumblings, we were up to our necks in studies and school activities. Some of us joined the Dramatic Club and took part in the plays given at school, some of us dug into the H. S. S. C. activities, and some of us gave our spare time to the Etiquette Club. A small group of us aided in getting the Maury News back on its feet again. Our first exams were very painful but we came through triumphantly. Before we knew it the Valentine Show rolled around and our curiosity nearly got the better uf us. Then the Minstrels loomed before us and in we jumped. Wle like to feel that we were in a small way responsible for that smash hit. Soon we were facing the thought of exams again. It can truthfully be said that the majority of us studied about seventy-five per cent better because of our previous adventure into the wilds of exams. So tomorrow will Find us Juniors. One more mile is traversed in ourjourney into the future. But until we take a peek into our junior year we are, FISHE SOPHOMORE CLAss, DOROTHY Hows. HORT ORY Metamorphosis By NANCY MAPP Several years ago, before the war, when most people were thinking about new scientific wonders, rocketing to Mars, or rear- ing theri children, I knew a boy. Perhaps he was not quite as grown up as the average boy of seventeen, nearing his eighteenth birthday. Then, again, perhaps he was. He would walk to school with me sometimes, and we often went together to see old Littleton High School play a football game. In the rowdiest of high school crowds, he was easily spotted by his red hair and his awkward walk. You could tell, too, that he continually felt in the way, as if he had not gotten used to his long arms and legs. We had innumerable squabbles and, having grown up together, we we both remembered the rough and tumble fights we used to have. . IVIAPP Our lives, ourselves, both were so natural. It was natural, too, for us to fall in love as we did. Millions of people had lived just like this, before us, behaved as we did, perhaps thought the same thoughts. Millions had, and more than probably millions would after us. Not that it was humdrum. No, not at alll A couple of silly high school students like us could find all the excitement they wanted in a crucial football game or in the discovery that they had fallen in love with each other. I was quite young then, too. I must have grown up rapidly those four years. Yes, I must have or l would not be able to think back on it and feel this way about it. l had not realized how much we had grown up, though, until I saw him again yesterday. lt had not been three years since l had seen him. He had been home the first Christmas after his induction. At that time he was a cadet in the Army Air Corps. He had to have six months more of training before he could get his wings. I do not know how he happened to have that Christmas furlough, but, he did, and we reveled in the happiness ofit. Yes, I saw him, then: taller, straighter, with an air of nonchalance, an easy-going way about him. His red hair was cropped close and, with the shearing of his head, he had lost his crazy, young-boy recklessness. This gave way to a new ease, a slight suavity which was becoming to him. His voice was strong and deep. His old loping gait had disappeared, and in its place had come a great swinging stride, produced, perhaps, by marching miles in cadence. In one sweet moment of seriousness he told me that he had done a bit of thinking up in God's world, the sky, and, l learned that he had had many profound thoughts. lf the Army does this for all its proteges, why don't all men enlist, I thought. Now, l know. I did not know, then. I was such a child. I could not see very far aheadfno farther than a certain healthy, red-headed soldier. After that Christmas, he completed his training, and he spent his next Christmas overseas, in action, piloting a plane loaded with machine guns, bombs, and lives. He had several narrow escapes, and won recognition as an ace pilot. l'hat was what he had wanted. I was rushing from the chemistry lab to algebra class when l learned that he was home again. Jane Peterson had passed by his house on the way home to lunch and had talked to his mother. As Jane began to tell me this, I realized that she was watching for my reaction. Wlell, I would not satisfy her. I would not let her see that he had not let me know, but it was strange. He had come back home and did not care for me to know that he was here. When that Christmas furlough had come through, his mother had called me almost as soon as she had read his letter, and, I had met him at the train with his family. But, why the change? What had happened? The minute school was over, I fairly fiew out to see him. I taxied up the front steps and came to a crash dive when his mother admitted me, and I saw him standing behind her in the living room. For fully a minute we stood there and looked at each other. I must have changed, toog he just stood there looking so long. I did not notice that at the time though. I was absorbed in the change in him. His lower -iaw looked stronger to me than it had ever looked before. I noticed that his hands were in perpetual motion, clenching, relaxing, clenching, relaxing. His eyes had become penetrating. They had never bothered to penetrate before. They had been content with the surface of things. Hi, Ace, I said. That was the way I had started so many letters to him. Then I noticed, for the first time, that his features had become hard. He was actually stern-looking. When he s woke I realized that his voice had grown sli flitlv H, . l 1 5 . gru . Hello, Sis, he said. Though all his assumed toughness, I could see that his voice shook a little and that he was tired, infinitely tired. Through and through he was tired. He went on, I got an unexpected leave. l think they said I needed a little rest, or something, but, anyway, they sent me home. As we jabbered on, he took my hand, and I realized that there was nothing wrong between us. A little rest, though, that is it. just a little rest and the kind of love and security one has in a small town like ours, and he will be his old self again. No, he C5111 never be that. His youth is gone forever. He is a man now, perhaps a little broken by what he has seen and done. Rest may cure that, but youth, once lost, can never be found again. He is a man. ESSAY Animosity-'World War II By XYERNON PHELPS There is that in the soul of man which breeds animosity. ln times of great emo- tional and physical confiicts, this animosity . dominates the soul, having its roots deeply embedded in fear and jealousy. From these T sources springs the hatred that in war men Pumps condone, in peace, condemn. Such a feeling now exists between man and his fellowmen-a feeling brought about by the age-old struggle for world surpremacy. Japan, fearful and jealous of the greatness that is America's, reached out in eagerness to grasp that which was not her own, and America, to avenge this barbaric attack, struck back. Hatred, born in fertile soil, Hourished. A long, destructive war soon engulfed the peoples of the earth. This enmity, harbinger of the sword, is the dangerous and deadly weapon employed by man to create sufiicient friction for the annihilation of life. Similarly, though strange it may seem, there remains in the soul a deep and lasting love for mankind. This contrasting feeling is truly characteristic of America todaye-an America that, in concentrated effort, is bent upon destroying its fellow- mang an America that, in equal spirit, is feeding and clothing the hungry peoples of the world. One abhors the devastation wrecked by the Germans upon the helpless countries of Europe but admires the great contributions made by this nation to mankind in the past. Can we, in our hatred today, detest the nation that claimed Bach, Beethoven, Durer, Wagner, Goethe, l.uther, l-lolbein, Einstein, and Brahms, who, like many other Germans, contributed much in the fields of music, art, literature, and science? Man may say it is not the nature of human beings to hate the deed and love the father of that deed. Is it within his power to love and hate these opposing forces? lt is not an impossibility. ln man's nature there is that which eventually will bring him to cling to one and forsake the other. Through understanding he may be shown the fallacy of his deed that for the betterment of mankind a change may be made. Thus, and only thus, can we accomplish that which brings peace. lt is the duty of the teachers of today to instill in the hearts of young people a kindred spirit, an understanding of and a tolerance for their fellowmen, a knowledge of the greatness of peace, and a single hatred-for war and desolation. They, the leaders of tomorrow, would be given a voice in the preparations for their future. The older generation has failed to achieve the goal which free men so earnestly desire. Should not those who will inherit this future take part in the plans for a post-war world that will be void of continual strife and animosity? ln that way, they who have been reared in a world of hatred and chaos may prepare for them- selves and their future a world of lasting love and peace. By making strong and firm the ladder of today, youth may assuredly climb to the tranquil beauty of the morrow. Qu 4 W HX Unszamz Niltfng: RICH A RD B Lftsts, l'z'e.vidf':1f SffZI1fHl1lK.' In our association with the secretaries of the school, we find out how elliciently they perform the detailed work and small and large tasks. The knowledge we are gaining here as helpers in the daily routine will not be fully realized until we have said Goodbye to fair Maury and are out on our own. Among them is the Christmas play. But this year it just couldn't be any play-it had to have meaning behind it. The Iwinzrfi' gf f,'h1'iJfi1lIl.f Eur answered our every desire. Many are the legends concerning Good King lVenceslaus who frequently disguised himself and went into the street to get close to his people, listen to their woes, share their joys, right their wrongs, and deal with their oppressors. The Mi1'1zrlt' QfiCf17'f.ffl1l1l.V Esc, the story of one such adventure, presented convincing proof that right triumphs over wrong and cheered a war-minded Maury. First, Ronnie Allen's brilliant 70-yard run was called back because of a clipping penalty. Then the Commodores, with Jones, Ranier and Allen tearing holes in the Suffolk line, raced 70 yards and Harford 5 yards to score again, but another penalty Cthis time for off-sidej nullified the deed. On the next play, however, Royce Jones, faking a pass, found an opening and went over stand- ing up. No penalty this time. Ranier circled end for the extra point. A blocked punt, blocked by Bruce Jones, paved the way for lVIaury's second touchdown in the third quarter, Dubby Wynne recovering on the 5 and Ranier crashing over a moment later for the score. The extra point try did not register. MAURY 14-WILSON, N. C., 0 A line buck, a forward pass, and a safety took the Commodores to their second victory of the year. Taking advantage of a penalty against Coon, Rainer smashed off right tackle from the four-yard line for the touchdown, and Bruce Jones' placement was wide. After Bruce Jones recovered a fumble on the VVilson thirteen midway of the last period, Ranier picked up three yards before Allen, faking a pass to Zekert, completed a toss to Bucky Hudgins, who took it on the live-yard line and crossed the goal untouched. Late in the fourth period Hudgins broke through the Coon line and nailed Glover in the end zone for a safety. IVIAURY 45-Sour:-1 Nonrouc 7 Mark Harford, Commodore fullback, sent Maury ahead in the first quarter when he slouched off tackle for the initial touchdown. Other Maury touchdowns-Allen 121, Royce Jones, Ranier, Miller, Wynne. For South Norfolk-Pierce. MAURY 19-HAMPTON 0 Scoring three touchdowns in what proved to be one of the most spectacular games of the season, the Commodores held the Crabbers Ronnie Allen stores againrt Wilxan scoreless. ln the second period Ranier broke off tackle and raced ninety-four yards across the goal standing up. During the first half the Crabbers hammered hard at the Maury line, but lacked the final push to shove the ball across into pay dirt. Several times a first down would have given Hampton the goal to go, but Maury held them to no gain. Another high- light of the game was Gage's booting for Hampton. One of his punts went forty-nine yards to the Maury six-inch line. MAURY 14-NEwi'oR'r Naws 12 ffirst gamel Coming from behind in the last three minutes of play the unbeaten Commodores downed Newport News in their fifth victory of the season. Outplayed in the first half and trail- ing by 7-12, Maury renewed their passing attack in the second half. Allen threw a fourth- down pass to Zekert that was good for twenty yards. On the next play Ranier crashed over from the one-yard line to put Maury in the lead 13-12. Ranier passed to R. Jones for the extra point. Allen saved the day when he nailed Harding on the twenty, who was in the clear, having received a pass from Spicer on the midfield stripe. R. jones put an end to the Typhoon threat when he intercepted a pass and ran it back to the fifty-yard line as the game ended. MAURY 20ml lI.IZAl!E'l'H Crrx' 0 The sixth successive victory of the season came to the Commodores when they tackled Hlizabeth City High School, in Elizabeth City. After an uneventful first period the visitors came into scoring position when Ranier passed to Allen for a first down on the Elizabeth City ten-yard line. Ranier carried the ball over and B. jones added the extra point for a lead of 7 to 0. liater, in the third quarter, Ranier shot a thirty-yard pass to Wynn, who later led to Harford on the ten-yard line. Harford went over standing up. After a sixty-yard Trmfliduwn pair, Runivr In .1'llen in Ihr fffllfib-V gzzmf flflarlc Hrzdurd cutting down hir man march during the last period, Royce -Iones went over for the first touchdown. The extra point was made on a pass from Ranier to R. jones. MAURY 0-Pirraasnuius 0 Slated as favorites to win thier seventh straight game, the Commodores were out- played by the Crimson Wlave in forty-eight minutes of bruising play which ended in a scoreless tie. Sticking to straight-running plays Maury marched to Petersburg's fifteen-yard line to start off the game, but they took to the air. Buck Kitchen nabbed Ranier's first pass, thus thwarting Maury's only scoring threit, and from here on Petersburg dominated. The VVave began its goalward march when Rinker intercepted the third Maury pass. Petersburg succeeded in taking the ball to the Maury seven-yard stripe as the gun sounded ending the half. Following a quick kick by Kitchen, the ball struck George Hughes' leg and the VVave took over on Maury's 30. Three run- ning plays gave the visitors only a two-third gain and Kitchen kicked out of bounds on the Maury one-foot line. After Royce jones punted Maury temporarily out of danger, R. Allen recovered Kitchen's fumble on the Commodore's 22. After Kitchen kicked into the end zone for an automatic touchback, Allen's pass to Ranier, The Petersburg Special, ate up 19 yards. A succession of passes took the ball to Petersburg's 31, but then Ranier's pass intended for Zekert was intercepted and Maury's scoring chances went up in smoke. The whistle blew ending the game on the next play. MAURY 13+VTIl.SON 0 Although Wilson outplayed Maury in the Hrst half and made eight firstdowns to the Ccmmodores' 6, two intercepted passes en- abled the unbeaten Maury team to chalk up a 13-0 victory in their 25th game with their rivals across the river. A VVils'mn pass was intercepted by Zekert on the President's 27, who streaked down the sidelines to the one- yard stripe where he was brought d iwn. Har- ford crashed over on the first down for the initial score. ln the last minutes of play Hughes pulled down a Wilson pass on their 30 and carried it back nine yards. From the 21 Ranier and Allen took it to the two-yard line, but the Presidents held. Ranier went over from the one-yard line on the fourth down. MA u RY 45-Goupssoizo 0 Scoring in every period, the Commodores crushed out Goldsboro High in their worst de- feat of the season, Maury touchdowns-Royce jones, Allen QQQ, Wynne, Ranier, Miller, Forrest. MAURY 0-NEWPORT News 6 Csecond gamel The Commodores lost their first game in their second contest of the season with the Golden Typhoons of Newport News before an anxious crowd of 3,000 fans. The single touch- down was made by Buddie Lex, quarterback, who, with only four minutes left to play in the first halp, intercepted one of Ronnie Allen's passes to Billie Ranier and took the ball to Maury's eleven. Lex scored on a line buck, pushing through guard for a touchdown. Newport News threatened again late in the fourth period after a lateral from l.ex to Avery. The Typhoon fought its way to the Maury live-yard line, but the Commodores held and took the ball on downs. George Hughes, averaging 55 yards per kick, punted Maury out of danger. MAURY 18-GRANBY 0 Maury retained the City championship by beating Granby's Blue Comets 18 to 0 in the Dubby vnne looks on with lF!1JKAff'I1llH'f.f fizzdfifzgevxr Thanksgiving game before a Foreman lfield capacity crowd. The Commodores capitalized on two long touchdown passes by Billy Ranier, one to end Allen Richter and the other to halfback Ronnie Allen, to take a 12-point lead at the half. ln the fourth quarter the Com- modores scored again. Bruce jones, whose specialty seems to be the blocking of kicks, knocked down one of Dick lvanhoe's attempted boots. George Hughes, playing his last game in Maury togs, followed the bounding ball over the goal line and gathered it in for Maury's final tally. Two kicks and one pass failed in the extra-point department. The triumph marked a glorious climax for a well-coached Maury team, scintillating like the stars of a constellation in a clear sky.
