Season by season, event by event, iwe have poured into these pages the story of the gradual progress and develop- ment of the school year, 1941 to 1942-not in the minutest detail, but with a series of records and pictures in more or less consecutive order that may serve as an aid to memory in recalling the intimate aspects of the changing scene of the past months. We Dedzmfe . .. this book and all it represents to Mr. James E. Old. From our entrance together as Sophomores, we have grown closer through the years by association with an adviser, sportsman, and friend. Now, we, the Senior Class of 1942, dedicate this, our symbol of the present and hope for the future, to a classmate left behind, but whose guiding principles of good living will always remain foremost in every mind .... a book and a man devoted to the achievements of Maury . . . a true Commodore . . ...j ames E. Imagine our consternation at suddenly Finding ourselves reduced to insigni lieant sophomoresg imagine our confusion at being expected to find our places in a vast, new lmuild ing among hundreds of older students who seemed to know exactly wliere they were going 1nd what they were doing! Schonliolt, YVise, Brown, Miss Harris, Hugg SOPHOMORE HOME ROOM REPRESENTATIVES Front-Catherine I.oCascio, Mary Knudsen, Marie VVilkins, Faye Ford, Shirley Gornto, Virginia Harlield, Jackie Hart. Row 2-Dan West, Joe Carson, William Martin, Jack Burgess, Carlton Creech, Robert Baum, Stanley Paul, David Stewart, Chester Sundquist. Miss Carolea Harris, our sponsor, on her hrst appearance before us, reminded us that a chain is as strong as its weakest link. From then on, we began Welding ourselves into a class that could pull its Weight in the affairs of the school. Our first step in organization was electing class officers and representatives to various activities. Then We got into the current of things at Maury. Our class presented several programs in the auditorium. We ourselves enacted the annual Commodore Maury program, during which the model of Maury's ship was giving into our keeping. On W'ashington's birthday, the theme of our program was Brotherhood,,' with Barbara Howe making a beautiful and impressive Statue of Liberty. For our religious program of the year, we had with us the rector of St. Paulis church and the Maury chorus, the latter, as a vested choir, singing sacred hymns. The Sophomore party, given by the numerous organizations of Maury, to the Sophomore class, Was a valuable and highly agreeable innovation, suggested by Mary Nell Baker and Allan Pannill. Yet besides these activities, We can proudly say our class has contributed in various ways to the schoolis life. Among us are cheer leaders, athletes, and students with honor-roll recog- nition. In fact, the entire Sophomore Class should be commended for its spirit of co-operation and its achievements. H O M E R O O M S 3 A N D 9 l mntwMmm, Burr, Whitley, Friesz, Sutton, Kcrshner, Fverton. Maury's grid- ironmen start the season with an encouraging per- formance. After a dull first half, featured hy Les Bangs' punting and the running of SuFfolk's Yates and Dashiells, the Commodores, led by Cloud's passing and running and Shan Thomas' glue-fingered snagging, score 12 points for a win. Sfenc' 2iMaury 40, YVindsor 0. Bangs, Cloud and Rudiger run wild. Maury gives a performance of power which the paper says proclaim that the Commodores are destined to go far in this year's scholastic warfaref' Srene3iRoanoke 18, Maury 15. Maury loses a nip-and-tuck fight to Roanoke. Speedsters Bear and Walton run up 18 points against the Commodores. Rudiger keeps Roanoke fans in nervous dread, scores twice, and passes with deadly accuracy. Maury's line holds twice on the 3 and 5. Roanoke pulls a deliberate safety in the fourth to insure victory. Maury's complacent student-body becomes alarmed. ACT I, SCENE 2 Q. :mn Cm., rf as 14:4 6 N9 MSU ACT II Seene I-Hampton 0, Maury 6. Rudiger's passing, Thomas' catch- ing and Cloud's line bucks account for 6 points as Maury's line bottles up Hampton's razzle-dazzle on a hot autumn day. Scene 2--Maury 15, Newport News 0. A shuttle pass, Rudiger to Cloud, a line buck by Rudiger, and a tackle by Lemon and Kayer, good for a safety, account for Maury's scoring. Carter McVay and Henry Shook stand out in the line. The latter, however, is carried of the field with a knee injury, which keeps him out the rest of the season-a great loss to Maury. Scene 3-Alexandria 12, Maury 6. Alexandria, long-time underdog, using a T-formation, plays the great game of its history. Maury is knocked out of the Conference race. Maury's student body becomes more concerned. ACT III Seene I-Maury 19, Petersburg 7. Maury is now written about as youths going through the motions of playing football. McVay breaks a 7-7 deadlock in the third quarter when he intercepts a pass and goes 70 yards for a t. d. Dinkie Rudiger's collar bone is snapped, and the injury list grows. Bangs repeats his first half feat with another touchdown. Scene 2-Wilson 14, Maury 6. Hallowe'en in Portsmoutlfs stadium sees Wilson blast Maury for the first time in ten years. Stumpy Caprio and Slade Phillips play the greatest games of their long careers for the Presidents. Maury's student body turns pale. Still the injury list grows. ACT H,SCENE 1 ' ACT'H,SCENE 2 1 CLOUD BANGS DUNCAN RUDIGER KELLER LEMON ACT IV Scene I-Maury 12, Marshall 19. Marshall, not scored on in 16 games, is shocked when Jack Cloud crosses their goal line for 6 points. Maury students perk up. Then Cloud pitches to Bangs, and the Justices are on the road to ruin with 12 points against their goose-egg. In the second half the Justices turn on the power, and their backs batter the rookie line of Maury. Veterans Lemon and Duncan stand up to the worst the Justices give, but Duncan receives a broken nose. Rich- mond Hnally racks up 19 points-yet this is a moral victory at least. Scene 2-Maury 0, Granby 20. Granby loses no time in tearing through Maury's defense. A great Comet line blasted the Maury wallg the Comet panzer-backfield ripped and snorted to 20 points. Maury students yell their voices out for a losing team. Sfene 3-Maury 12, Bullis 0. Maury turns over a new leaf-to win. Cato and Keller, by their play, insure their being remembered. Cloud and Bangs are the big guns of the offense, Gregory, Ranier and Sawyer hold the defense spotlight. EPILOGUE This is the story of a plucky team with no reserves which lost many of its first string men. This is also the story of a student body that had become accustomed to winning teams and now had a team that some- how failed to deliver, yet to which the student body remained staunchly loyal. The Coach likes fishing, boating, and golf. The greatest thrill of his life came when he was rescued while clinging to the bottom of an overturned sail boat, six long miles from shore, after four hours of almost hopeless shipwreck. His next greatest thrill was the winning of the State football title in 1939. COACH EARL HILLMAN is head basketball mentor. He holds letters from the College of NVilliam and Mary in foot- ball and track. Hunting and fishing, along with all forms and types of athletics, are his hobbies. Coach Hillman declares that the greatest thrill of his professional life dates back to 1932, when he saw the Olympics at Los Angeles. CoAcH BOB BATES shapes up the track teams and polishes the backfield of the football team. He won his letters at Springfield in soccer and football. Among his pet diversions are movies featuring Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett, a spot of swing, and all phases of athletics. His greatest thrill not yet, but soon to be, realized-the capturing of the State track title. , 5? . RAI-I! RAH! R A H ! CHEER '-I . sf ' LEADERS ' ' ' ' l 7'll7ll+HCl7CTf, Long, Rupcr, Shaulciczlu. Wallace Face The Small Girl's Mother in our modern story faces problems that many of us face this year. How to give what there is to give in such a manner as to make the gift not only acceptable but appreciated is exemplified for us by the speech and manner of the Small Girl's Mother. How to accept a gift that is not quite what we expect is a bit of graciousness revealed in the character, the Small Girl. Many of us have to deal with people exactly like the Neighbor-Next-Door. Again, many of us like the Small Boy often learn the true spirit of Christmas through a friend or neighbor who has faced the problems of sickness and trouble bravely and nobly. These are the principal themes of our Christmas Play for 1941. Smithwick 1J7't'5idt?71f ...., Vinh 1J7'L'.fiIZL'7lf .... .S'vz'1'f,'lzz11v .,... T1'U11.f1m'7' .... We assembled in the auditorium where we were told by Mr. Bristow and Mr. Games what was expected of all Maury students. The assign- ing of home rooms and the filling out of dozens ofidentification cards-our life's history in miniature -completed our first day, and we left with the feeling that our school careers had really begun. From then on, the months passed into terms which vanished in quick succession. Each new year brought new fads and jokes: 1939-Confucius and dirty saddle shoes .... 1940h-Yehoodi and drape clothes .... 1941 to 1942-moron jokes and junk jewelry. And there are the land- marks and practices that belong to every year .... Coca-colas and nabs',-the corner drug store -hot dogs and hamburgers-the library as the only place in which one could really study during study-hall periodswworrying a lot over exams and not doing much about them. Diary of Events-Our yearbook is dedicated to our Assistant Principal, Mr. James E. Old. Miss Margaret Peek, our class sponsor, becomes Mrs. Charles Preston Marks. The traditional Hall of Fame is changed to represent the ten outstanding members of the Senior Class. A dinner dance takes the place ofthe usual Class Night play. The Naval Reserve calls Coach Sidney Hughes to active duty. Ellen Smithwick is awarded the Citizenship Medal. On January 30, 1942, we received our diplomas and departed from Maury. CHARLES PRESTON NIARKS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY As we leave Maury, we face one of the most disastrous periods in the history of the world, the greatest war of all time. Some of us have already rendered our services and before long all of us must. We are but a few of the many who hold the title, Young America. When we pass from the halls of Maury, we will take with us cherished memories that no one can take away--memories that make our past three years the most pleasant of our lives. If we think back over our high school years, we remember the football games and the boys that carried the spirit of Maury so well. These include such stars as Henry Shook, Marvin Duncan, Carl Haggard, Louis Keller, and Pat Cato. Then, Dot Watts and the band, or Gloria Newsome and the cheer leaders, might enter our thoughts. After football came exams and basketball. Let's not remember the exams, but instead think of the championship basketball team of 1941. Allen Clay was the only Junior in the lineup, and he returned to captain a not so successful team as a senior. Baseball always has been a success, as has been Ed Little's batting average. Remember David Mann's curve-ball pitching and Carl Haggard's all around play? It's hard to name an outstanding member of a tennis team that was the best in the State for three years. However, Allen Clay, Johnny Old, and Crenny Reed enjoyed the success of the three seasons. To end our athletic reminiscences, don't forget coaches George Hope, Sidney Hughes, and Tony Saunders, who joined Uncle Sam's Navy, and their successors-Billy Martin, and Earl Hillman. Incidentally, Mr. Martin gave us the First wrestling team in Maury's history. While some Commodores were starring on the athletic field, others were making names for themselves in more scholarly ways. On the same page ofthe Maury Newt as Harold Reid's gossip column, one could find the names of the co-editors-Alice MacDonald and Chester Shaddeaug and of the business managers-Guy Beale and Billy Richard. And how can we forget Hugh Brown's untiring efforts to make the pictures in the Commodore a success? Speaking of the Commodore, don't forget the line work of our co-editors-Jean Goodwyn and Harold Masengill. If ever they weakened, Doris Schmoele, Webster Chandler or Eddie Cooper were always willing to lend a helping hand. Harry Rosenbaum and Harry Pincus deserve much credit for keeping the Commodore on a firm Financial basis. ' We all remember Jimmy Morgan presiding over our auditorium periods, the week-end dances in the gym, the Valentine Play, and the Fashion Show. The traditional Maury Minstrels will lose such stellar performers as Beverly Bennett, Margie Hayes, Dick Crouch, Harry Powell, Bert Nusbaum, and interlocutor Vernon Cofer, Jr. The girls, chorus will miss the voices of Nan Dickens and Laulie Bell Friedlin. And Maury's halls will miss the color provided by Cutie Bridges, Phyllis Leon, Mary Ellen Gilliss, and Dot Hebert. While we are recalling all these personalities, we are conscious that someone has been left out. VVe all know who she is, and what she means to each one of us. No one could have filled the office of Sponsor as did Miss Margaret Peek, who, about midterm of our senior year, became Mrs. Charles Preston Marks. If the success of our class was due to any one person, the credit should go to our Sponsor, who will always live with us as a beautiful memory and as an inspiration to face the world of our times. -JOHNNY OLD. Perhaps the summer school students are making up for lost time or gain- ing extra credits to speed the day of their graduation. VVhatever their purpose may lie, they deserve our congratulations. Only a person of strong determination could perservere through the drowsy summer mornings when so many outside interests beckon. It takes courage even to contemplate attending summer school after nine months of hard work. However, the student often finds it well worth his while to set a goal and work diligently towards it. By devoting a few hours of each day to study, the boy or girl who enters summer school usually Ends all efforts richly rewarded, especially in the case of the senior who then receives the High School diploma. -ALICE lVIAsoN, '43 JULIAN ELWOOD AMOS FRANCES ELIZABETH ARCHER HARRIET ARNOLD ELAINE BAKER REGINA TESLER BAR'I'l,EY PASQUALINA CECILIA CARLEO HELEN CHERACLES CATHERINE ELIZABETH DELANEY JOSEPH MILTON COLLECTOR MYRTLE FIELDS DOROTHY FLOYD GWENDOLIN E GRESI-IAM PAUL GOLDMAN MARY FRANCES GRIFFITH CARL ALONZO HAGGARD, JR.
