This was the first Norfolk high school. In September, 1909, fire partially destroyed the school. A temporary location was made on Oma- hundro Avenue. In 1911, we came into the new building with a greatly enlarged enrollment and curriculum. The reorganization of the high school made a change of name necessary, so the name of Matthew Fontaine Maury, the South's great geo- grapher, was selected. With the help of the art staff we have here traced the evolution of our school from its humble be- ginning to its present status. The Staff

Art-Editorial-Photographic Work In The Commodore The art staff, with Jane Brinkley as editor and Mrs. Margaret Dodson as adviser, began at an early date to make sketches of their ideas and to investi- gate the various mediums of expression suitable to the publishing of an annual. It was finally decided to use inked line drawings. Because of the varied talents of the staff there was no trouble experienced in getting the drawings made. They are all well executed and represent a great deal of work. This year it was decided to vary the routine manner in which the staff of the yearbook has been orgainzed. Different schemes of organization were suggested and discarded until finally the committee system was evolved. Instead of dividing the staff into groups with an associate editor and several as- sistant editors at the head of each group, it was de- cided to name one associate editor as the head of each section. Under each of these was a committee, varying according to need. In this manner work progressed smoothly. It is with grateful appreciation that these words are written. The business staff had two major tasks to handle: the actual business transactions connected with the Commodore and the arrangements for the taking of all group pictures before the deadline. That the book was received on time is credit enough to their efficiency and proof of their ability. Photographic work was under the supervision of the editor. A committee of photographers was formed and held in readiness to photograph anybody -anywhere. From the prints turned in by the editor and the committee the snaps for the student life section were selected. Following is a list of all committee members under the names of their respective committees: JANUARY CLASS SECTION MARY E.
