'Ste 6,0669 560197 Class l-listory Early in September, 1931, we, the Class of 1934, filed our passports as passengers aboard the powerful plane, 'flVlauryH for a three years, flight to a distant landing field called Graduation After our propellors had been swung by the faculty, who were interested in our flight to the unexplored regions which lay before us, our plane soared gracefully into new and adventurous heights. The day was bright, and our hopes were high, as we journeyed upward in our flight. We had no fear, for we had confidence in our efficient flying-instructor, Miss Roberta l lodgkin. Realizing the length of our journey, we elected Margaret Williams, pilot, f-lerbert l-ludgins, co-pilot, Lucy Singleton, hostess, and l-lerman Cole, mechanic. With these officers in command of our plane, we started for Junior Fieldf' the last stop before reaching our destination. Our first year was spent in becoming better acquainted with our fellow-passengers and studying hard, that we might become licensed pilotsfi After a pleasant flight of nine months, we landed, without much skidding, at fdunior Field, where we took aboard some strangers that were seeking to make the remainder of the flight with us, The following September with Carlyle Dunaway as pilot, C l.ydon l-larrell, co- pilot, Lucy Singleton, hostess, and l larry Vesey, mechanic, we set out for Senior ,miJmH1mz:g5,k aszseebxu,,.....,,,,.,.,............,,,,.,.,,..,.,,,...,,,,...,,. - ss rf- ' EI'lOOP THE CO ORE 1934 Fieldf' our final landing. On this flight, we exerted greater etlort to discharge our duties with pleasure to ourselves and honor to our plane. A lew passengers, who had become very Hdizzyn before reaching our last landing-lield, decided to jump with their parachutes into the unknown. The rest of the crew wished thema happy landing and continued on their journey. Alter a vaction ol three months, we boarded our ship as Hlicensed pilots and started again on our Flight to the long-sought haven, Graduation The following oiiicers were in command of the plane: l-larry Vesey, pilot, C. l.ydon l-larrell, co-pilot, Margaret Williams, hostess, and Richard Goodman, mechanic. Consulting our radio tele- phone, we found that there were treacherous storms ahead. Aboard our good plane, were two distinguished personages, Sidney Kitterman and Millard Warwick, editors respectively of our interesting publications, Maury News and The Commodore. Conscious of our duties and responsibilities as licensed pilots, we did our best to make the last mile of our momentous llight the best. The last night of the trip proved to be a great success and one which will linger long in our memories of by-gone days. Several of our number presented Friend l'lannah,', chosen by our flying-instructor as an ideal play lor the entertainment ol the passengers. As we neared our goal, we realized that we had gained invaluable knowledge from our experiences on our llight. We glided safely to the field ol Graduation, and the good ship Maury, which had so gallantly ridden the storms, was placed in the hangar of Success It was then that the Hlicensed pilots wished for each other many Hhappy landings in the future. -+Margaret Williams, Historian. When gray rain clouds hang low in the heavens, it rises from the shell-covered ocean caverns, and from the slimy green mud of the rivers and lakes. lts clutching fingers slide through the marshes and forests, and into the heart of the city. It creeps through the cracks and broken panels in the tenement windows, and eddies in chill whirls over the floor. It deadens the sounds in the streets, and the lights or' creeping automobiles loom through the mist like the eyes of terrible monsters. ln the harbor the bells andthe whistles ofthe ships speak in muffled tones, warning the sailors of hidden danger, and the hoarse voice of the foghorn moans across the water. its voice is like the voice of the Fog Ghost, crying from the depths ofthe marshes. --Virginia Harris. - .A ..-.- -. . . v 1 ' 611345 lOR GANIZATIONS THE CO OIE 1934 is -' N?-A-3-K 4g,,,.- --H4-xr 7 , -K7 I 7-I.. ..,-+4 4-- --1' -5-J ' - z-L,'- L-ri., I-W 1 Maury Clubs Ml Maury clubs constitute an outstanding plwase ol student lile. During the year, numerous trips are made to factories for the purpose of observing modern scientific processes. The local chapter of Quill and Scroll, the only honorary society of the school, has achieved gratifying results. Five of its ten members have vvon recognition in the journalistic contests sponsored by the National Headquarters. The young journalists specialize in vocabulary building, current events, editorials, and feature, sport, and advertising writing. Boys and girls who have mathematical inclinations find encouragement in the Cannon and in the Girls' Mathematics Clubs, respectively. The relationship of the arts and sciences to mathematics is studied and discussed in the meetings. The Commercial Club was organized for those pupils who are studying business administration. The members find worthwhile diversion in the programs. The athletic girl is given an apportunity to shovv her prowess in the Girls, Mono- gram Club. Basket ball, baseball, volley ball, tennis, and golf are the diversified forms of sport engaged in by this club. This, in brief, is a resume of the advantages and the enjoyment derived by club members. The companionship and the scholastic interest developed in these societies promote school spirit. .- . . 7. if .. His Fingers tapped a tattoo on the glossy table as he gazed out the big window, across the yard, and at the huge modern Railroad Terminal in the distance. Come along, Johngtheres tuna fish on your chinfi The old engineer raised his paper napkin, coughed to conceal his emotion, cleared his throat, and slowly rose. The two strolled out of the little restaurant shoulder to shoulder-massive shoulder to massive shoulder. They wended their way toward the Yard, and crossing the familiar cinders and gleaming rails, approached the roundhouse where the Baldwin, a Fine twelve drive-wheel engine, was warming. They climbed aboard and took their places. Old John settled back in the little iron chair and glanced over the gauges. His hand moved lovingly over the pressure lever, moved without the aid of the eye to each control. Slowly the great, black, streamlined locomotive cruised into the network oi steel tracks that laced, joined, parted, and split into hundreds of sidings. John backed into his line oi olive-green coaches and coupled with the mail car without the slightest ripple slithering down the long line. Captain Judson, conductor on the Sunset Limited, lolled over to John. Howdy, Johnf' Howdy, Jud. Big crowd tonightf, They stood in silence together. A great puff of steam folded out along the runways. U 'Boardl rolled from car to car, each porter taking it up. The huge pistons on the Baldwin slowly moved, the great drive-wheels turned, and the Sunset Limitedn slipped from the tremendous steel-latticed train tunnel. Lighted windows and many faces and figures passed, some already starting to nap, some adjusting bags, some reading, some talking. The round silver shield bearing the name Sunset Limited in red lights on the rear platform of the Observation Car slowly grew smaller as a mellow, lingering blast told that the 'Il:45 was on its way4-. wk lk is Bk Dk ln the Observation Car, several of the steel magnates discussed business over S1 .50 cigars. The eyes of a little boy in a fauntleroy suit drooped, as the rattle of the track joints lulled him to sleep. ln the Sleeping Cars, porters whisked snow-white covering and swiftly prepared the berths as the passengers nodded in the spacious lounge. A salesman warmed into a good discussion with the plump manufacturer from Detroit in the men's Smoking Room. farther up toward the front sat two men. A sleepless night was ahead of one, a newspaper in the lap of the other concealed the handcuffs beneath. ln a drawn berth lay a little girl, gaspingly breathing because of the coin lodged in her bronchial tube, on her way to a nationally known New York State specialist at Rochester. Along the line, the gradually diminishing cry of an italian baby annoyed the one Day Coach the Sunset condescended to handle. ln the Mail Coach, a sturdy guard filled extra clips for the shining Browning Automatic before him. perspiration streamed in the engine cab, as shovelful after shovelful was fed the roaring Baldwin. Qld John was at the window, hand easily on the throttle. l-le gazed out at the broad streets over which the train passed. The lines of street lights, like strings of pearls, appeared and disappeared. The steady clatter of the rails changed to a deep rumble as the Sunseti' flew out across the huge bridge over the river. Between the flicking girders, John saw a million stars doubled in the water betwixt the many ships. l le glanced lovingly back at the city, robably because he could count the number of times he would make this run again. Efhe tall, slim, occasionally lighted buildings on each side of the river appalled him. The Trust Building, with its illuminated tower, lowered slowly into the horizonfs black diffusion, as the swift Limited, shot through the canyon of tremendous warehouses and factories, where great squares of light showed that the night shifts were busy. Grudgingly the foundries gave way to un- pretentious apartments and flats, which, in turn, disappeared at the second bend in the reat river. Gut and across the Pennsylvania Railroads power dam sped the train. At the farther end, the Electric Building reared. White with illumination, the massive structure stretched skyward. The blazing sign on the top of the office unit seemed to describe everything that filled the world that night, as it intermittently spelt P-Q-W-E-R in a thousand lights. John looked back again at the receding skyline of shadows and lighted streaks, the glow in the heavens, the rambling factories, and the multitude of houses. l-le glanced forward over the thirty-foot boiler of the Baldwin, streaking after the flashing ray of her headlight. He felt intimate with something inexpressible tonight. He could not explain the sudden surge of emotion that tingled his whole body as the distant Ap- palachians echoed and re-echoed the piercing blast of the Baldwin's whistle, but, S Z jf ,wi f ----3 31605 THE CO ORE 1934 52- li! vaguely, he felt that he was a part of something-something great and stirring. ' ' ra. .. . 1' 611615 THE CO ORE 1934 The Power of Personality ll-QE! an Throughout the years, man has been vigorously striving to obtain power and position higher and more influential than that of his neighbor. His idea of power today is purely that of a materialistic nature. ln his eagerness to gain power, he is unconsciously overlooking the real meaning of the word. io obtain a goal, an individual mustdfirst have the power of personality, that elusive quality which serves as a magic wan . ln the realm of character, one develops integrity by being upright, sincerity by being sincerei industry by being industrious, and honesty by being honest. All of these qualities constitute personality and are elements which lead directly to power. Personality is really the individualism which is characteristic ofa person. Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt are outstanding, because they dared to represent higher standards, better conditions of living, and a higlher code of ethics. Their efforts show the personality and appeal of these leaders in istory. Personality is often tested by the times, that is, by the economic and social unrest of the ages. Abraham Lincoln, who will always be remembered for his altruistic spirit which embraced all races and creeds, won recognition through his unselfish spirit during the times which truly tried men's souls. Lack of money and of education, and life in the new western civilization with its hardships became the setting of the drama in which Lincoln was the hero. Self-educated, he rose to success and found himself the leader ofa nation,-a nation filled with hate, revenge, and unrest. It was Lincoln's conquest over this surging scene that won the admiration of his fellow men. A similar part was played by the beloved Southern gentleman, General Robert Edward Lee. His unselfish spirit kindled the hearts of his associates in both war and peace, His passionate loyalty to the truth virtually makes him the patron saint of the South. He carried high the stainless banner which stood for loyalty and unselfishness, that it might lead all who followed in the train toward higher ideals. To make the world safe for democracyi' was the aim of Woodrow Wilson. His determination and his concern for the American people have made his ersonality one of distinction and influence. He stood for what he thought was right. Cgften those who obscurely stand alone in the fight later lead the multitude in the cause of right. Proudly and sacredly, we utter the name of franklin Delano Roosevelt. First, overcoming physical handicaps, our President is now battling against national diffi- culties. Mr. Roosevelt stands for power as President ofthe United States and reflects personality, because he is 'iihe Man of the Hour. His ability and winning personality have placed him high in the people's esteem and made him the hope of our nation. To give quality to life, one must learn to direct his wants, thoughts, and actions into a satisfactory personality. A great author once wrote: Small desires mean small powers- Small thinking-puny living- Small efforts-petty results. Large desires indicate abundant powers- Large thinking-creative living- Energetic efforts-generous rewards. , ,W if - -Y --? ,.,- V f -----e , 'O' 2'-11' -1' iii, . , .f ...U ., . I- H., -,s1.5..k.H,-Af 41695 ...F THE CO ORE 1934 Ones personality affects the lives of those with whom he has daily intercourse. A cheery smile to a neighbor each morning will probably give him a desire to start the day with renewed hope and vigor. A lcind word to a school-mate will tighten the bond of friendship. A radiating personality is an influence which conducts hope and contentment to all with whom it comes in contact. A cold and barren schoolroom may be illumined by the personality of the instructor. Ambition in the minds of the young is fanned with the hope of achievement by the influence of a leading personality. Probably the most powerful asset of personality is that characteristic which malces one stand out from the masses and gives him distinction. Everyone knows that there is in man a ruling spirit which is himself. This spirit, great or small, dull or bright, pure or evil, is seen in his eyes, in his conversation, and even in his voice. Striving to complete a personality is a worthwhile endeavor. Broad human sympathy and a genuine interest in others will help to develop initiative and leadership. A courteous, gracious manner and a lcindly spirit radiate charm and act as a magnet. Enthusiasm is one of the greatest assets. It tramples down prejudice and opposition, spurns inaction, and destroys all obstacles. It is shown in attitudes and manners, and it spreads like the fragrance of a lovely flower. Patience and tactfulness have saved many embarrassing situations and have prevented evil words and harsh manners. It is necessary to possess both of these characteristics to further the building of personaility. The battle of justice with injustice is being constantly waged. The outgrowths of injustice are the many petty evils which slowly strive to overcome personality and to wealcen its force. If injustice becomes a characteristic, one need never attempt to pursue the path that leads to higher thinlcing. The power of personality is being built day by day. It is the contribution that each and every individual has to make to the world. What one is to be a decade or two decades from today hinges on his present day development. We are now being molded by the potterk-lime. --Margaret Williams, fNote: This essay won first honors in The Commodore essay contestl 'wr 7 Y - 0 A ef: N, 4 .-11 ' . 1, 'I' D. . , an t - 2..,. . ..h..,.....,..........................,........1........ , , , Mi , , ... 41635 THE 1934 AFFIRMATIVE l ZALMON GARFIE LD P LOUIS RWES ALTERNATE ELIZABETH LEWIS ALTQRNATE NEGATEVE FERN FITZGERALD FREDA NELSON PHILLIP LEIBOWSTZ DEBATING- TEAM .- ' J,..,:f fi ' f' v- 7 f L-11 -gimmmrssxsfrxfiq gm .,,..,.,. ,...v,,.,,..L,,.,,.-:....1.g....,u........,....,m.,.,.,...,zssfxrfzfvizwiay ' ff3 41645 THE CO ORE 1934 G TEAM Puauc READIN Fmmcus nrrven sAnAH Knuesn SHaNrf'iK'G U DEXTER M'BRlDE. From the time that it was travelled only bythe Redskins to the present, and in the future until its muddy waters shall have ceased to flow, it has seen sorrow, happiness, tragedy, and joy and will continue to see them. lt has passed through periods of intense cold and scorching heat and has many times evidenced the fury of Mother Nature while in flood. Then, again, it flows placidly and serenely to its outlet in the Gulf of Mexico. But whatever may be its manner of reaching the sea, whether calmly or turbulently, it always flows pgwerfully and mysteriously, like some great hand reaching eternally for an unattainable o ject. Approximately one hundred years ago the calm passages of the steamboats on the Mississippi were occasionally interrupted by attacks of bands of river pirates. These river highwaymen, as their predecessors of the time of the Golden Spanish Empire in the Americas, were ruthless and cruel to the passengers who often were woefully unprotected on their journeys. Jeff Bundy was a typical leader of a certain one of these bands known and feared for its excessive cruelty. Black Jeff, as he was sometimes called, would at first glance, perhaps, have been called handsome, but a careful study of the weak, shifty eyes, the thin mouth, and the narrow, pinched nose of the man might give some idea of his real character. When he was with his band of water rats, he was to all appearances brave and blustering, but when alone, he often fell prey to his own thoughts and had to boost his courage by a drink of fiery liquor. As he slumped forward on his saddle, Bob Pritchard was a man obsessed by only one idea-Revenge. ln spite of all his efforts to dispel that awful picture, it kept recurring to his troubled mind: first, the entry of the pirates into the cabin, then the picture of his father pleading with Black Jeff, Please let me keep this locket. It was given to me by my poor, deceased wife. The bandit's scornful laugh as he jerked the locket from his father's vest, his father's agonized cry, and then the shot simultaneous with an ugly curse uttered by Jeff'these he could still hear. As he held his dying father in his arms, he had suddenly resolved to rid the River of this frightful, unwelcome character, even at the cost of his own life. This resolution was still evident in the set expression of his face. l-le shrank at the thought of murder to gain his ends, but that seemed to be the only way since there were no organized bodies to enforce the law in the early settlements of the river. Entering the little settlement of Muddy Cave, he commenced questioning a settler. ul-las Black Jeff been in town lately? With a queer expression, the man hurried on without responding. Entering a saloon, Pritchard sidled up to the bar and under pretense of drinking, kept his ears open for any talk of Jeff. At last his patience was rewarded when a big, bearded fellow with a tongue loosened by liquor engaged him in conversation. Well, Pardner, looks like we won't be troubled by Black Jeff now for quite a while at least. N :m f 'T' Agmswsgsmssm......,....,.,,.,....,-,.............,,w,.,.Y.,....-...,:f:sav.ssmm4s.a.g' 7 61675 THE CO ORE 1924 Why so? This, in a cautious tone, was to feel out his companion. Rivers in flood, Mister. No steamboats can travel her when she's in flood. Pritchard lcnew this meant that Black Jeff would stay in his hideout, wherever it might be, until the flood subsided. Where does he hide in flood-time'?H U 'Bout ten miles up river near Dry Gulch. Say, Pardner, you ain't aiming to go up there, are your? But Pritchard, having obtained all the information he needed, left the man, who, with a shalce of his shaggy head, returned to the comfort of his bottle. Untying his horse, he leaped nimbly into the saddle and started on the journey that would possibly lead him to his death. l'lis thoughts were confused, for he was trying to thinlc of what he should do when he reached the hideout, but he could thinlc of nothing better than trusting to luclc and his trigger finger upon which he relied implicitly. At times he came to openings where he could see the river. It was an awe-inspiring sight, The foam-crested waves raced madly on their course down-stream, seeming to vie with each other in their efforts to be the first to reach the sea. Here and there, the swirling waters were dotted with tree trunlcs and parts of houses, which were swiftly being borne down-stream. ln the midst of his musings, at an abrupt turn in the trail, he came face to face with the man whom he was seelcing. With a curse, Black Jeff reached for his gun, but Pritchard beat him to the draw and shot his gun from his hand, leaving that member quite paralyzed for the moment. Then Jeff, seeing that his adversary meant to take him alive as he had not lcilled him with that first shot, quickly wheeled his horse and started on a mad gallop along the banks of the river. Pritchard spurred his horse on in close pursuit, ln spite of all his efforts, however, he was swiftly being outdistanced by the superior speed of the pirate's steed when an awful thing happened. As he veered close to the river, the banlc, undermined by the rushing waters, collapsed and precipitated the horse and its terrified rider, Jeff, into the raging river. Pritchardis only thought, as he reined up his horse, was that he considered it a pity that such a fine horse was lost! - -. l.ast summer while surveying neara former course of the Mississippi fit changes its course oftenj l came upon an old tablet which after close scrutiny was found to be inscribed with these words: ul-lere, Blaclc Jeff Bundy met his just doom at the hands of a power greater than any man's, the Mississippi River. Erected April 6, 1831, by Robert W. Pritchard. With this meager inscription as a clue, l was finally able to unearth the preceding tale, after an exhaustive questioning of the natives of the district. -fzfaclc Fantone. A green line constructed around co-Captain Bruce Burton, guard, and Kennie Bell, end, early displayed sterling defensive qualities, holding the first three opponents scoreless, but it was not until the final two games of the season that the Com- modore offensive came into its own. A veteran backfield consisting of All-Southern Herbert l-ludgins at quarterbaclc, All-Southern Joe Thomas and Bill Bateman, veterans, at halfbaclf, and Ail- Staten l.onnie Seay at fullbaclc was disrupted early in the season by injuries, and it was not until the final games that the quartet was able to perform together. l'lampton's Crabbers, malcing their first Class A league stand, elced out a scoreless tie with the inexperienced Commodores in the initial game of the year. Maury's attaclc bogged down near the enemy goal and repeated threats came to naught. South Norfollc, wealcer than in previous years, bowed to an improved Orange and Blue offensive the following week, but the Commodores had to be content with a scoreless tie with the Typhoon of Newport News in their second conference game of the season when a last-quarter drive fell a yard short of a score. William and Mary and Virginia Polytechnic lnstitute's offspring school in Norfollc pasted on the first defeat of the year in the final minute of play by a 6-O margin. Lacking offensive punch but still struggling for results, a dogged Maury eleven surprised Petersburgs undefeated and untied Goobers in a hectic struggle which represented the finest display of courage of the season. The Coclcade City gridders were stung by a Maury score in the waning minutes of the first half, but they rallied in the final periods to tally twice in spite of a dogged Commodore defense. 1934 EARL JACKSON BRUCE BURTON niviss wiccs woonnow can .. . . John Marshall, victorious over Wilson, was crushed in a beautiful display of football, 'l9-O, and Wilson succumbed in the climactic game of the season on Thanksgiving Day by the margin ofa single touchdown. lndividual contributions to that final rally were numerous, and many Commodores were honored with selection for mythical state and sectional scholastic teams. Mauryis championship hopes were struclc a blow when Eugene Sawyer, sopho- more llash, was injured in the first meet. Herbert Hudgins consistently rolled up points lor Maury in the dashes, hurdles, shot, andjavelin. Robert Campbell, supported by Paul Joyner, bore the burden in the mile and 880-yard runs. Raymond Pearce came through in the hurdles while Charles Lawrence led the Maury men in the 440-yard clashes. Bill Fowllmes starred for Maury in both the high and broad jumps, while Archie Sheeran toolc time from javelin tossing to leap also in the high jump. James Jaclcson and Kenneth Fentress, newcomers to the map-making squad, hurled the javelin and weights. Maury opened her season slowly, losing to Newport News High School and the William and Mary Freshmen. Maury placed second in the Norfolk Triangular Meet and then followed this up with a smashing victory over Hampton and Woodrow Wilson in the Lafayette park Meet. Newport News's strong team captured the annual Tidewater Meet at Williamsburg, with John Marshall placing second, and Maury third. William and Mary, Norfolk Division, however, halted the Maury advance behind the steady pitching oi Freddie Edmonds, ex-Com- modore diamond star, and went on to win by 9-3. The damage was done, however, when Woodrow Wilson capitalized upon two walks and a hit batsman to score twice in the ninth to win by 4-3. Doug l-lautz, stellar Commodore southpaw, held the Kiblermen at bay for eight Frames but weakened in the ninth, and Callis came to the rescue too late to save the day.
