Sun awakens late sleepers THE SKY' 'HIGHER EVERY MILE The end of another dby. Song is Source of Spirit A school song is a large source of spirit and pride. The Maur Hill song is no exception. It is a spirit builder at pep rallies and athletic events. The Raven Song had its origins in 1935, when Maur Hill was in its early years as a high school. It was written by Father Raphael O'Malley who was then director of the Abbey choir at St. Benedicts College, and later joined the Maur Hill staff as head of the music department. I told you woman. A Change for the Better Maur Hill grew and changed, but the school song remained in its original form. Eventually, however, there was a need for the song to be revised. As the times changed, so it was necessary for the song to change. In 1977, on an idea from the student council. Father Barnabas Senecal held contest to revise the lyrics. The con- test was won by Ken Glennon. 1978 Maur Hill graduate. The finished product was the melody we have today. It is how we proudly pro- claim ourselves to be the Maur Hill Junior Ravens. The Junior Ravens demonstrated their winning style in true form this year. In fact, they showed nothing but this, with an unde- feated season, climaxed by winning the State 4A Championship. In 1977 two forces came together for the first time: newly named Head Coach John Flynn and an outstanding group of soph- omores. That year the Junior Rav- ens had a fine season tying for sec- ond in the Big Seven League. This group gained skill and confi- dence. In 1978 they aided the team which won the Big Seven Championship, and traveled to the State Playoffs winning the District Title. By 1979 these young sopho- mores. now seniors, were ready to take over the leadership of the Junior Ravens. They knew that this would be their last try for a State Title. The team combined with an excellent coaching staff and were able to win I 3 straight games. They outscored their opponents by 231 points, rolling up 318 points on offense and only giving up a stingy 87 points on defense. Winning the State Title meant many rewards. Five handsome trophies were proudly accepted, medals were awarded to all 43 players, banners were donated for the gymnasium, steak dinners for the team were heartily accepted. Maur Hill was given a real name, and most impor- tantly memories will never fail to exist among players, parents and students. Lance Page shows his kamikaze style. Joe DeWald stops LeBlond back short of first down. Bill O'Boyle s long evening'' was spent eating Lafayette's nose guard's lunch. Robbie Weber returns one of his many interceptions. Mike Turpin's All-State form leaves another defensive backer in the dust. 84 Mike Turpin proudly displays the District trophy. And when we thunderize. you better have a lot of thunder paper’ The '79 Tri-Captains were Joe DeWald. Mike Turpin, and Craig Domann. Mike Weber picks up even more yardage for the Junior Ravens. Craiger ties it up. making a Homecoming victory possible. Joe DeWald shows everyone who the Regional cham- pions are. 85 Craig Domann makes the tackle as Joe DeWald. The golf team, thwarted in all it's previous attempts at a state championship despite domi- nating regular season play, finally accomplished that goal at the Osawatomie Golf Course. Playing in a nagging drizzle, the team had to hold off both the elements and a hard charging lola squad to gain the title. The four-man. led by senior Doug Herman (3rd place medalist at State) and outstanding freshman Thad Purslow. was complimented by the steady play of junior Tim Keeley and senior John Seheult. Rounding out the remainder of the 6-man squad was junior Steve Beilis, and both senior Tim Henry and freshman Jack Senecal who rotated in the final slot. During the regular season the team played strong, well balanced golf while winning 6 of 7 meets and taking a second place against a field of 5- and 6-A schools at the Olathe Invitational. The team, coached by Guy Galley, also won it's second consecutive Big Seven League Championship. The golf team started Maur Hill’s magical State championship year of 1979. and with a lit- tle luck might start a year of repeats in 1980.
