Under the direction of Corky Lord, students compete in local forensics tournaments. Upon a rat- ing system, provided by K.S.H.A.A., students are evaluated. From this evaluation students are awarded medals respectively. Maur Hill has been active in forensics for the last two years, but this year seems to have been the most promising. John Schuster and Joe Miller The Maur Hill and Mount Student Coun- cils both enjoyed a very successful year in 1978-â79. The Maur Hill Stu-Co. was headed by Mike Murphy, and the Mount Stu-Co. was run by Liz Bock. They spon- sored a number of joint events, such as dances and movies. These, plus individually sponsored grub days, etc., put them on good financial ground. This allowed them to contribute to a number of community chari- ties. Senior reps. Aside from the cheer- ing, Pep Club also sponsors community service activities. This year the club was headed by Seniors Janie Hegarty and Sharon Growney. It consisted of 80 spirited members, whose sup- port was greatly appreciated. Co-Captain Sharon Growney The 1978-79 Pep Club. S.I.R.C.H. This yearâs team, which consisted of Brian Handke, Mike Scheopner, Kevin Cavanaugh, Don Nease, Chris Nastav, Pat OâKelly, Tracy DeWald, and Tobin Purslow, promised to be one of the best C.C. teams in recent years at Maur Hill. Yet when the league meet rolled around at Sabetha, two of the top five runners ran with injuries, thus hampering the quest for second place in our league. Injuries proved to be the rule rather than the exception as only one meet was run with all runners, while the everpresent Coach Jim Krone kept his stopwatch and whirlpool always ready. Mount Cross Country The Mount Cross Country team consisted of two girls this year, both seniors, Alice Amrein and Liz Bock. They did very well but in order for the team to exist next year there must be some underclassmen go out. A new girlsâ sport has been started, letâs keep it going strong. With Senior Leadership from Brian Ellsworth, Mike Stec, Glen Grosdidier, Rick Bindel, Rick Weber, Ken- nedy Johnson, David Jackson, and Tim Henry the Maur Hill Jr. Ravens established an outstanding 9-2 season. An undefeated league record and the conference championship, the District 4A Championship, and the Regional Runner Up Trophy were all thrilling aspects of the 1978 Raven season. Combine the tremendous accomplishments of the team with the post-season recognition of individuals â All Big 7: Stec, Grosdidier, Johnson, Joe Dewald, Lance Page, and Mike Turpin; All Area: Ellsworth, Stec, Grosdidier, Johnson, and Craig Domann; All State: Ells- worth (2nd Team) and Grosdidier (Hon. Men.) â and the result is one that pleases not only the players but the school and patrons alike. It is important to note though that what really matters is not the final outcome but the people involved in the contest. The 1978 Maur Hill Jr. Raven Football Team was a squad of 37 exceptionally fine and talented young men who sacrificed their personal goals for the goals of the team â they blended their individual tal- ents to create one large talent known as âRAVEN FOOTBALL . The first opponent was the Kaws of Perry LeCompton on a Tuesday night here on the Ravensâ home field. The two teams fought to a 14-14 tie at the end of regulation time. The Junior Ravens captured the victory in overtime by the score of 20-14 on Quarter- back Craig Domannâs one-yard sneak on fourth down. The following Saturday the Junior Ravens met the Bluestreaks of St. Joseph Shawnee, again here on a cold afternoon. The Ravens fought their hearts out down to the last play of the game, but coming up short. The final score was 15-8 ending one heck of a football season for the team. Hopefully next year's team will go two more games farther and be STATE CHAMPIONS!! The Ravens packed the stadium. Co-Captain Brian Ellsworth awaits the measurement. The Junior Ravens explosive offense. J. V. Football Playing only a four game sched- ule. the Maur Hill Junior Varsity fash- ioned a 3-1 record. After an opening season loss to Nemaha Valley, the Ravens defeated LeBlond. Immacu- lata, and Hiawatha. The same energy, desire, and enthusiasm that were such an inte- gral part of the varsity team showed itself in each and every J.V. contest. With such a hard working, dedicated group of young football players, Maur Hill fans should enjoy Raven football for a long time. Schuster were the starting J.V. backs. 73 Frosh Football The Freshman Football team ended their season, with a 2-5 mark. As the record states it seems not to have been a good season, but, this is not true. Each contest was so close that the vic- tory could have gone either way. This group of young men found out what Maur Hill Football is all about, willing to return next year. With the new addition of Coach Mark VanDyke to the coaching staff, Maur Hill should consider themselves very lucky with this new dimension. The team was an inexperienced one, having only four returning lettermen. As the year progressed the team did also. Highlights include the victory over Holton in the last match of the season to tie the team for third in the league standings. Raven Basketball was comprised of sixteen individuals working for a common goal. Six members â Brian Ellsworth, Tim Henry, Doug Herman, Larry Huber, David Jackson, and Rick Weber â shared their talents and atti- tudes for the final time. They were the heart of the squad and will be sorely missed in times to come, yet what they have left behind will always be a part of those to follow. Although winning has always been, and very likely will be, an integral part of any contest, the most important fac- tor in reality is the people who work for the common goal. ' Spring Sports 1978 Because of publication deadlines, each year a small portion of the Maurite is dedicated to those sports which did not appear in last year's book. Even though these sports took place last year, we feel it important that they be included, for too much dedication goes into these sports for them to go unnoticed. On the fol- lowing pages Track, Golf, and Tennisâ 1978. 91 Track '78 Head Coach Marty Gonzales and Co-Coach James Krone spearheaded the â78 Track team throughout the year. Under them were three seniors Mike Clem â State Champion, Pete Klebba, and Mike Page. Mike Clem won every regular sea- son meet in the mile and two mile races. Besides accumulating many medals he holds the school's record in the mile and two mile. One of the biggest highlights of the season was at the Big Seven League meet at Sabetha, where the 440 yd. relay took first place. Mike Scheopner lets it fly! . Pete Klebba shows his winning style. Coach Guy Galley led the Ravens to a perfect season, which included a two man crown in the T3-A Regionals and a third place Four man at the State Championships in Russel, Kansas. In the regular season they Took all the Goldâ, by winning all gold medals in each Invitational plus First medalist in every Tournament. Schools records were broken over and over. The members of the Maur Flill Golf team miss Fr. Paul Steingraeber and will remember the years he taught and coached at Maur Hill, therefore, they dedicated the '78 season to him.
