The band was under the direc- tion of Mr. Mike Worley, a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University — Marysville. Mr. Worley succeeded Mr. Ben Dehner who resigned last spring and accepted a job with Atchison High School. Mr. Worley heads the music pro- gram which includes the band, mixed chorus, freshman music, and a beginning course in band at St. Benedict's grade school. The band had a successful season last year. Friday afternoon scheduled the Students vs. Alumni in the annual intramural game. It marked the first time in years that the students had won. Sophomore Mary O’Keefe was crowned during the game and her court consisted of Fresh- man Peggy Klebba and Junior Connie Lutz. The Spirit came to a head Friday night at the Pep Rally. Class signs were decorated, as the Junior’s banner was voted the best. The Freshmen, who consistently showed great spirit all week, were awarded the Spirit Stick they deserved. The Homecoming Queen was announced and Janie Nass ruled over the Court. The bonfire was lit follow- ing the announcement of the Queen. Success is perhaps what makes sports worthwhile. Possi- bly not the success of a 9-0 football season, or winning every cross country meet, but the success of doing as well as a person believes he can do. Many people seem not to understand what a bitter sense of disappointment a team experiences when a game or a season has gone by. The many hours of hard practices, and the games that should have been won, and the games that were won, all this has slipped by, and something you held very dear has been lost. It is difficult to realize that an end has come to some- thing which seemed so worthwhile to those involved. It was once said that times people experience together are not half as good as the years of recalling those memo- ries. Here, we have tried to hold at least some of those memories, hoping that the fun and good times are still yet to come. 53 SPORTS Bottom Row, L-R: T. Karutchil, C. Jaramillo J. Agudelo, S. Audelo, M. The Maur Hill Cross Country team enjoyed a very fine season under the guidance of Jim Krone. Bringing home three 2nd place trophies and 25 medals. The team included 3 return- ing lettermen; Mike Clem, Brian Handka, and Mike Scheopner, who with the help of Kevin Cavanaugh and Tobin Purslow, placed a very respecta- ble 2nd at the 1977 Big 7 league meet. This by far has been the best Cross Country team Maur Hill has had in its history. Senior MIKE CLEM won the state 3A C.C. Championship. The STAR! Russel Noll is ahead? What form, what grace! 56 S] 1 — ---------- J Maur Hill's second year in the Big Seven conference was an exciting and reward- ing one for the Jr. Ravens. With a victory in the final game of the year against the Holton Wildcats, the Jr. Ravens could have captured the league co-championship. But such was not to be as the perennial powerhouse Holton team ekked out a mea- ger 13-7 victory, and the Ravens finished second in the conference. The Big Seven conference recognized the potential of the young Maur Hill team though as nine Raven players were named to the All-League team. Craig Domann garnered the first team quarterback spot while Mike Turpin was honorable men- tion at flanker; Pete Klebba, honorable mention tackle; and Joe DeWald honorable mention guard. On the defensive team were Lanse Page, first team linebacker; Brian Ellsworth and John Gerdes, first team ends; and Mike Stec, honorable men- tion tackle. The overall season seemed to be a series of peaks and valleys with the final record standing at 4-5. The offense showed definite signs of maturing as the sea- son rolled on, but the defense was a mature group from the outset allowing nine opponents a total of only fifty-five points. The thirty-four player squad was a young team with twenty-seven underclass- men solidified by seven seniors. Playing their last football games for Maur Hill Prep were Ed Haake, Pete Klebba, Mike Page, Mark Brentano, Todd Flynn, John Gerdes, and David VanDyke. Jr. Raven football will miss them, but the impression they left on those to follow will never be forgotten. ATC;. 4U1 .... ATCHISON. AS J J J 57 i Front Row: B. Reinjas, S. Crossland, S. Gardner, J. Fielding the finest varsity team ever in Mount history, the girls went on to take third place in the Big Seven, just narrowly missing second place when they dropped a tough last match to Holton. Spirit, enthusiasm and a “Never Quit” attitude were the earmarks of this year’s team, both varsity and junior varsity. The seniors led the way, showing fine leadership from begin- ning to end. This year leaves the team with a tradition for the future, the proof that winning can be fun, and with great expecta- tions for future years. 64 Becky May KimWolters Peggy Clements v Varsity shows off their form. Tryouts are held at the end of April to choose the cheer- leaders for the following year. In 1977-78 the cheerleaders painted signs, held pep rallies and led the crowd in cheers at sporting events. We think they did a great job. This year’s Varsity Cheerleaders were: R-Becky May, A- Kim Wolters, V-Peggy Clements — Head, E-Susie Schneider, N-Janie Nass, S-Barbara May, and alternate — Lydgia Church.
