Each member is an important part of every school, not only in teaching, but in aiding each and every student in any way possible. Here at Maur Hill and the Mount there is a dedication to both job and vocation, helping students to learn and grow and trying to place a taste for learning and growth. That is the faculty. 7 FACULTY Fr. Edwin Watson Mr. Edward Stork Fr. Edwin tells Fr. Barnabas what he thinks about it. administration Again this years administration is headed by Fr. Edwin Watson. Head Master. Fr. Barnabas Senecal still holds his office of Assistant Head Master. Mr. Edward Stork completes the trio of administrators as the Academic Dean. Fr. Edwin was around here more often than in previous years. This meant that he gave up many engagements to be with his boys. Fr. Barnabas held the responsibilites of Assistant Head Master this year, to lead the school to a productive year. Mr. Stork again kept order in the school life of a Maurite. He tried to keep the academic status as it has always has been, excellent. Though one could not be with out the other, the ad- ministrators united together, as one, to organize and maintain Maur Hill to a school everyone is proud to be a part. 8 Fr. Barnabas Senccal “Now I remember when . . . (Fr. Barnabas) Fr. Barnabas listens intently to the Microphone. “Why did 1 ever get into a business like this.” (Mr. Stork) Fr. Edwin tries to finish before lunch. 9 Board of Directors discuss the up coming plans for the new refectory. board of directors Maur Hill's Board of Directors is a group of con- cerned and dedicated people. The board at times is call- ed upon to help the faculty in raising funds and keep the academic stature high at Maur Hill. So to these people we say, thank-you. Abbot Thomas gives his view points. 10 Board members listen with interest. Dr. Michael Murphy starts the building of the new refectory, which will be called Saint Michael's after his patron saint. What form, what style, what league of st. maur League of St. Maur, whose purpose is to help finance the educational status of Maur Hill, succeed by bringing about a new refectory for next years Maurites. The League founded by Dr. Michael Murphy of Chicago has brought this years students a year they could forget, to these people we are indebt. Do you see what I see?” Mr. Stork does the dishes science Now Dave, here's how it goes. Fr. Bruce calculates the air pressure in his bicycle tires. Science department duties were again filled by the same teachers as last year, except for the departure of Fr. Gabriel. hr. Bruce took care of the physics and chemistry classes. Mr. Smith handled physical science classes along with biology. And Mr. Stork taught biology and psychology. These three teachers again gave Maur Hill a depart- ment of learning. 12 “What did you break now? Mr. Smith. Mr. Stork ponders at his ring. 13 What a profile Fr. Paul math department Once again the mathematics department plays a fine role in the educational system at Maur Hill. Father Paul Steingreaber taught two Algebra I classes while Mr. Tom Dunphy was holding down two Geometry classes and a Freshman and Sophomore course of General Principles of Mathematics. Mr. An- dra heads the department again this year. He taught two Advanced Algebra, Analysis and Business Math. He also supervises Calculus I which is an extramural course offered by K.U. I will tell the jokes around here. (Mr. Dunphy) Mr. Andra is mixed up? This is my best side.' Mr. Andra gets things straightened out. Geometry is not hard, if you turn your book the right way you might understand something.” 15 I saw that!” Don’t give me that.’ The man of distinction. art department The art department provides its fair share of school spirit. With Father Luke Wenzel heading the depart- ment is seemed to complement all other school ac- tivities. Art classes 1, II III (basic fundamentals) con- tribute to the fine effort which they accomplished. Through the year they work with ceramics, woodwork- ing, serigraphy, oils and acrylics, sculpturing and water colors. Elaine, Moore, student teacher from St. Benedec- tine College, helped in these different aspects. 16 Miss Moore has left Maur Hill but will not be forgotten. t r. Roger Rumcry Heading the business department again this year is hr. Roger Rumery. Father taught both journalism classes, bookkeeping and typing. Moderator of the Taller and Mauritc again appeared on his schedule. He continued as alumni director and, to show his out-going ability, was again elected president of the Atchison County Historical Society. “I don't know about this Gardner.” Kohake get down to serious business? social studies Social studies instructors. Mr. Brown, Mr. Galley, Bro. Jude, Fr. Camillus, and Fr. Barnabas combined to further the knowledge of our historical background. Considering his painful jokes, Mr. Brown was still able to manage American History A, two courses in American Problems and Economics. Mr. Galley handl- ed Psychology of Learning and Physical and Mental Health, with Bro. Jude holding down Sociology. Fr. Camillus takes care of World History and Fr. Barnabas teaches Am. History B. I “Ah, could you pass that one by me again. (Mr. Ramsey) english Fr. Thomas took senior english again this year. Mr. Ramsey took care of the junior and sophomore classes. Miss Palumbo and Fr. Benedict split up and taught the freshman english classes. Miss Palumbo also helped the foreign students with their english. Fr Benedict tries to figure the thing out. “Latin, how sweet it is!” (Fr. Owen) language Languages were again taken care by Fr. Owen, Fr. Martin, and Fr. Bruce along with Miss Palumbo. Fr. Bruce taught French. Fr. Owen relived the classics (La- tin). Miss Palumbo and Fr. Martin taught English as a foreign language. Fr. Martin also teaches Spanish. “What the matter little boy?” (Miss Palumbo) 21 According lo Snoopy . . . (Fr. Owen) religion Fr. Paul Steingreaber headed the religion depart- ment again this year. Along with his chaplain duties he accomplished to set up a very efficient religion program. Both schools again this year combined with coeducational classes to make religion a lot more in- teresting for the students. A first happened this year in the religion department as Mr. Ramsey became the first lay teacher to teach religion at Maur Hill. Fr. Paul-our chaplain in action. 22 Br. Jude wraps up his homework. “Well besides your grades you’re doing fine” Every teacher at Maur Hill is considered a counselor, but these three men, Fr. Paul, Mr. Galley, Mr. Stork, are the three given the title of counselor. Whenever a student has a problem that needs to be aired, whether it be what college to go to, or a social problem, he can talk to these men and get help that is badly needed. There are activities such as dances, dramatics, athletic games or pep rallies. These set an attitude of freedom in each students mind. He is free to choose any activity he wishes to participate in. Some, in- cluding plays, prom or homecoming dance, require a lot ol work on the part of the students. This makes the event all the more satisfying when it is successful. Others, such as in- tramural sports, pep rallies or mixers, create a free attitude that makes each student want to join together in spirit. 37 ACTIVITIES Maur Hill 72-73 Stu-co officers (I. to r.) When the going gets rough and you reach down into your soul and pick out enough strength to do what has to be done and do it properly, that is when you can say you’re a sportsman. And when defeat comes and you've done your best, you are able to accept it graceful- ly knowing that you aren't the best, but never letting this dampen your spirits to try to become the best. The class of 1973 tried their best and hopefully will keep on trying in their lives after Maur Hill. It's this type of guts that makes leaders for tomorrow. The leaders and the followers of the class of 1973 surely will make a mark on this world. 57 SPORTS football 1972 1972 Jr. Ravens. Bottom row: Coach Galley, T. Shriwise, F. Agnew, M. Hen- nigh, K. This started out a ten day camp, the first of its kind at Maur Hill, which all the football players were given an excellent chance to get into shape. The camp was a place to learn for the Ravens, and they took advantage of it. Through the season the mood of winning was there, which was also in the camp, but also the mood of having fun. The first game started with disappointment, but these men came back to win their next game. The third game, which eventually took Maur Hill out of state playoffs, was full of mental errors and ended up as a loss for the Junior Ravens. Not low in spirits the team regrouped and pul themselves on a winning streak that would last until the end of the season. Though there were a lot of hard ships and a lot of fun times, everyone grew together as a unit that knew pride as a team known as the Junior Ravens. 58 Assistant Coach Jerry Brown stalks the other team. schedule M.H. 0 St. Joe Shawnee 21 M.H. 40 Sabetha 20 M.H. 14 Savannah 19 M.H. 27 LeBlond 8 M.H. 21 Sumner 6 M.H. 20 Hayden 9 M.H. 35 Immaculate 16 M.H. 27 A.C.C.H.S. 15 M.H. 7 Maryville 0 Final Record 7-2 Total Score M.H. 191 Opp. 114 scoring Miklozek ' 66 Brungardt K.. 30 Shriwise 20 Rindom D. 18 Henry '8 Highberger 12 Wyatt 12 Van Dyke K. 6 Bollegar 6 Sankavadana Safety 2 Head Coach Raven alias Guy Galley. 59 Assistant Coach Tom Dunphy gets worked up over the game. Basketball became an activity to look forward to, es- pecially with the initiation of the statewide competition in Regional and State tournaments. The Academy put forth a dedicated group of roundballers and the fans came to enjoy the games. The Junior Varsity had a good year, ending with four wins and two defeats. They will return next year with ex- perience and improved skill. The varsity had a rocky road with several close games. Never before has Maur Hill seen a senior class like the class of 1973. Never again will Maur Hill see a class like the class of 1973. No two senior classes are alike. Each class leaves its own distinct impression on Maur Hill. This senior class leaves its impression deeply in the history of the school. No other class can claim such diverstiy in uni- ty, such unity in diversity, or such pride and hatred for the school. Maur Hill is losing a great asset with the graduation of 1973. Last class to be housed in the old dorm, first class to be house in the sophomore floor of Howard Hall, this class has been through much and not always with a smile on its face. Graduating seniors can remember picking up corn on an early Saturday morning in freez- ing weather, and the next Saturday in 90 degree weather. It is usually said that the underclassmen must carry on and this may be true, but it is the seniors who must carry on the tradition of Maur Hill into the world outside of the little community of Atchison, Kansas. 91 SENIORS Kevin VanDyke hits the books. The class of ’1973 is the last class to graduate with memories of both the old and new Mount. As freshman at the old Mount they soon learned to climb the three flights of stairs to classes and enjoyed the fun of eating lunch at Riccardi. One of their big accomplishments was the changing of the law not allowing “frosh to attend mixers after basketball games. Although this wasn't ac- complished until almost the end of the year it gave an in- dication of the great leadership which has been proven through the years. As sophomores the class of 73” once more had to adjust to new school surroundings—the new Academy. This proved joint activities with Maur Hill possible. As juniors they faced many new responsibilities such as planning the first joint spirit week with Maur Hill and later the prom. With their great leaders and with their equally great followers the juniors attained success with each event bringing with them paint fights, many hours of work, and a closeness which united the class of “73” as one. Carrying out the prom theme “Precious and Few , the juniors realized that their beautiful high school days were almost over and that next year as seniors the days would be precious and all too few. Lor the class of “73 the days as seniors passed all too quickly. These days were filled with events such as spirit week, football and basketball games, dances and graduation. This was the year of many “lasts for the senior class. Yes, the class of “73 must leave the days in which they shared happiness and friendships. They must face again new “firsts in life. For the class of “1973 has only just begun.” 106 NANCY BIDDING JANETS. BRULL KAREN SUECICEWSKI The Homecoming Queen and her court. By this it is meant that this per- son is not something below an upperclassmen but at the same level in a different manner. An upperclassmen has no future left in the school, he has made his story. But an underclassmen is someone with a future, a story yet to be made. A story no one can repeat, a story no one has ever made. He is unique, he is of the future and must live in the future, while the up- perclassmen must live on the past.
