The Second Vatican Council's stress for mission activity, the revitalized program in teaching religion here at Maur Hill, the Great Books Program, the renewed interest in the Liturgy, and the publicity, lectures, and slide shows on the recent foundation in Brazil by St. Benedict's Abbey contributed to this consciousness. Nevertheless, among Maur Hill alumni there are men now distinguishing themselves by their leadership and dedication in Mission Activity and the lay apostolate here and abroad. To all Maur Hill men, and especially those who are spending their lives to bring light, love, and purpose to humanity still crawling in poverty and darkness, and to all men and women dedicated to their fellow man, we respectfully dedicate the 1965 Maurite. Father Matthias Schmidt, O.S.B., Prior, still talks football, a sport he starred in at Maur Hill. Administration Mount Advertising spiritual cjrowth academic achievement physical development cultural accomplishment Maur Hill School Atchison. Kansas 5 Fattier Abbot Thomas Hartman, O.S.B. Father Edwin Watson, O.S.B., Principal Compared to other years, the administration department had a relatively easy job this year. There was no language lab to be completed, no gym or auditorium to find seats for. But still, the job was hard. A new religion program sprouted into being. Air conditioning appeared in the study hall and library. And a new light panel was installed in the auditorium. Fr. Edwin, again, spent most of his time traveling in the financial interests of the school. His job was to reduce our debt to the point where a new dormitory building could be started. Fr. Kieran had the unglorious jobs of trying to get everyone on the honor roll, and being disciplinarian. He wielded such big sticks as jug and detention. The school year '64-'65 will be remem- bered as a year of milestones. Father Kieran Mclnerney, O.S.B. Vice-Principal 7 Administration Brother Jude, Athletic Director Mr. Guy Galley, Guidance Counselor 8 Fr. Gabriel, Mr. Stork, and Fr. Bruce take time out for a smoke. Science Department The man who will first set foot on Venus may once have been a Maurite. If this is so, his first stage solid-fueled booster will have been the Maur Hill science department. Still new, the de- partment offers courses in General Science, Physiology, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Mr. Stork taught two Biology and two General Science classes. Fr. Bruce taught Chemistry and Biology C. Physics was taught by Fr. Gabriel, and Mr. Galley took care of Physiology. Chemistry students were the record setters this year though. In one one-hour period they managed to break four test tubes, three crucibles, and an ashtray. Fr. Bruce asks Ron Creten if he knows why. Mike Eagan uses the adding machine to average out his debts and credits for bookkeeping class. Department Fr. Roger uses his stopwatch to time the typing class. Fr. Jordon gives the freshmen an assignment. Brother Jude ponders a question. English Department Fr. Thomas asks a senior a question. Mr. Stork and Pat Lysaught discuss an English test. Under the leadership of Fr. Wilfred, with help from Fr. Jordan, Fr. Thomas, Bro. Jude, Mr. Stork, and Fr. Kieran, the English department expanded this year. By tape, English students listened to the professionally recited essays and poetry of such great authors as Edgar Allan Poe, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Carl Sandburg, and Robert Frost, ag well as such classics as The Aeneid, The Canterbury Tales, The Pit and the Pendulm, St. John's Gospel, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Macbeth, and the immortal Hamlet portrayed by Richard Burton. Students also received instruction through visual projectors in speed reading, oratory, mem- orization, vocabulary, and creative writings. Students are thus becoming introduced to a wider and more com- plete range of learning in literature and grammar. The seniors read Antigone in class. 13 Father Martin lectures Freshman Latin class. Fr. Bruce reprimands Bob Regan for studying too hard. The Maur Hill Language Department offers Spanish, French and, of course, Latin. Father Martin teaches Spanish, Father Bruce teaches French, and the Latin instructors are Father Owen and Father Martin. The fully equipped language lab facilitates the efforts of these instructors. The language classes have cooperated in working out a schedule for the daily use of the lab. When the language lab first came into usage, Latin as is usual, was not taught as a spoken lan- guage and Latin classes didn't use the lab. But with an eye for progress, the Latin instructors began utilizing the lab in their classes. French instructor. Father Bruce. Department Father Owen Purcell and his Freshman Latin class. 14 Sophomores learn their Latin. Fr. Martin teaches English to Spanish-speaking Maurltes. Music Department This year the Music Depart- ment again boasted an active Glee Club and Band. Fr. Camillus also again had a Beginning Band for those students who had never played an instrument before. With the rearranging of the class schedule because of the new religion program, Glee Club grew from athreeday-a-week study hall filler to a full time class. The Band lent life to pep rallies and basketball games this year, and also played in programs in collaboration with both Maur Hill and Mount Glee Clubs. Fr. Camillus squeezes blood, sweat, and tears from his Glee Club singers. 15 Physical Ed. instructors Mr. Richard Andra, Jerry Brown, and Brother Jude Highberger Physical Education Department Maur Hill, new and up to date as it is, also takes ideas from men who lived long ago. For it was Plato who said that to im- prove a man's mind, start by making an athlete out of him. This is the aim of the Maur Hill Physical Education Department: to make athletes. And Mr. Andra, Mr. Brown and Brother Jude have found that moulding minds is much easier than moulding muscles and co-ordi- nation. Brother Jude before the gym class. Social Science Department I Man's history and modes of living are studied at Maur Hill. This year the Social Studies department offered five courses; Citizenship, Sociology, World History, American Problems, and American History. The department's aim is to build better citizens through the appreciation and realization of man's duty to society. Citizenship, Sociology, and American Problems prepare the student for his future role as a citizen of the nation and of man- kind. World History and American History acquaint the student with the story of man and with his cultural background. Mr. Galley hands back Citizenship tests. Mr. Brown helps Terry Shinn with his American History notebook. Fr. Camillus watches Mike Mullins and Chris Compton put up a map in World History. Brother Jude surveys his Sociology class. 16 Fr. Owen gives the sermon at Sunday Mass. Fr. Herman answers Dave Matthew's question as Brian LeFevre prepares another one. Pat Suddarth leads the discussion in a Junior religion class Religion Department F r. Kieran giving his weekly religion lecture to the Juniors. School year 64-'65 saw a new religion program at Maur Hill. Fr. Kieran, after spending much of his summer time planning and preparing, introduced the program this fall. Each class was split into five groups, according to ability. They spent two days a week discussing HI-TIME, a magazine writ- ten for religious instruction, and two days a week in study hall. The other day, the class spent as a group listening to a lecture by Fr. Kieran. As a whole, the student body thought the new program excelled the old one. Many stu- dents especially thought the small groups paved the way to learning. 19 Math teachers Father Eric, Mr. Andra, Father Gabriel, and Father Herman Math and Art Departments Father Gabriel and student in discussion A not so well-known author once compared Mathematics to Atlas, in that they both hold up the world. In order that Maurites may one day take their place in this pillar of strength the Maur Hill Mathematics department again offered a variety of courses. Fr. Herman and Fr. Eric held down the geom- etry classes while Fr. Gabriel and Mr. Andra taught Algebra. Fr. Herman was also the sole teacher in the Art department, which offered Art and Mechanical Drawing courses. 20 A drawing helps uncover the mystery of mathematics. Mr. Andra explains a theorem in trig class. Art class draws its inspiration from the outdoors. School Personnel To keep any institution rolling smoothly there are people behind the scenes who must be devoted to their cause. Maur Hill is no exception. Maur Hill students owe a debt of fratitude to the men and women who ept their classrooms, dorms, lounges, and locker rooms in order as well as to those who kept the grass cut on the football fields, electricity flowing to the lights and heaters, and kept the cold air outside by repairing broken window panes and broken door jams. These are the jobs that are overlooked, but which are essential to the well-being of any institution. Miss Ruth Hansen, Secretary Mrs. Kay Conrad, Secretary Mrs. Catherine Roth, Librarian 22 Mr. James Perkins, Maintenance 26 The 1964-65 underclassmen showed signs of reach- ing adulthood. The juniors watched and prepared them- selves to be next year's leaders by supplying leadership assistance in the various clubs ana teams and by excelling academically. The sophomores displayed endless enthusiasm for school activities and distinguished themselves athlet- ically. Nor were their names lacking on the detention lists. Finally the freshmen, in outgrowing grade school ways learned to use study hall time prosperously and fulfilled their usual role of helping in out-of-the-way jobs. Every boy engages In varsity or Intramural athletics throughout the entire year. Varsity activity again was especially successful as the Ravens time and again plavea every minute of the game to the utmost of their ability. Moreover, this year • soccer was raised to the varsity level. Maurites, through athletics, prepared themselves for life by integrating play and competition along with the traditional Benedictine values of work and prayer. Varsity Football LEFT TO RIGHT: R. Because so many good linemen and backs of last year's team graduated, a mediocre season was expected. But under the leadership of backs Joe Turner, Roger Buford, Wayne Kramer Russ Verkest, and linemen Larry Thomas, Bill Gerst, Joe Peltzer, Mike Vollmer, and John Risse, our team developed fast. The dedication of backs George Leiszler, Greg Breck, and of line- men Ron Dodge, Tony Carroll, Tim Maher, Mike Slattery, Ted Nelson, Mark Tork, John Manzotti, and Marion Kuhlman provided unusual depth allowing for strong replace- ment in case of injury. The highlight of the season, I thought, was our last game of the season against Central. Every player seemed to give more than he had for this game, for the block- ing and tackling and running were for keeps. I feel it was a pleasure and honor to have coached the 1964 Raven football team. 45 Maurites and Mounties listen attentively to speech delivered at Homecoming pep rally. Quarterback Greg Breck works a play during practice. Signs in hall excite students before Homecoming game. Coaches Galley and OfConnell supervise blocking drills. For the past few years soccer was regarded as a minor intramural sport. Most Maurites knew so little about the game it wasn't much fun. This year a group of soccer enthusi- asts got together with Fr. Eric and ar- ranged games with experienced teams like Rockhurst and De LaSalle. It wasn't long before the team drew crowds of Maurites to Sunday games. Boys from Mexico, Boliva, Honduras, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Argentina taught American Maurites fundamentals, to which they responded and became competent players. In the first year of organized soccer, the Ravens went undefeated and held the opponents to eight goals. We are proud of the Maur Hill soccer team, proud of the Maurites for the great support they gave it, and look forward to next season. Eduardo Coppel plans his move as Rockhurst player approaches. MAY DAY Again last year, the first of May brought the expectation of May Day. The students fought off spring fever for a week and a half, and finally the big day came. Through races, high jumping, throwing events and swimming, the traditional teams, seniors with freshmen and juniors with sopho- mores, tried to show their superiority over each other. In '64, the seniors and freshmen came out on top. To make their victory over the juniors and sophomores complete, they then won the tug-of-war. The day was ended when the faculty added another victory to their yearly string by out pulling the already tired senior-freshman team. 76 Fr. Gabriel and Dave Kassen keep track of the day's events. Faculty and students lounge around. Sophomore and Junior strongmen strain their muscles in tug of war. 78 What can I do now? This cry of small children is rarely heard at Maur Hill. Besides plain old study, there are an abundance of extra-curricular activities which Maurites can 'join. Besides being a way to spend time, most activities cause learning. Journalism talents are developed by the TATLER and the MAURITE. The Great Books Club teaches thought. It also gives its members practice in discussion and expression. Tnedepths of science are explored by none other than the Science Club. Ex- pression through music is found in the Band and Glee Club. The Dramatics Club builds skill in acting and in designing sets and other backstage work. And there is the king-- the M-Club. The Student Council, under the di- rection of Fr. Kieran, performed well their duties of representing the student at official functions, conducting student assemblies and pep rallies, and negotiating differ- ences between student policies and those of the administration. We have worked hard to produce a yearbook that the student body can take pride in. We have gained valuable knowledge in putting together this Maurite. This experience will always be of value. We have enjoyed the hours spent on this Maurite, and we hope that you recall many mem- orable events as you peruse it. The freshman and sophomore class put on their own plays, 'A Man name Johnston' and 'A Game of Chess,' so they could gain more acting experience before trying out for a part in a major play. Few students realize how much time and effort goes into the construction of a play. Hours of studying lines and gestures, painting, carpentry, and sweat make our dra- matics club what it is. Fr. Jordan Meyer, the Dramatics Club Moderator, be- lieves that the members of this year's club deserve a great deal of credit for the good work. He believes some of the boys in the club have the potential of becoming great actors. If some of them should, Maur Hill can be proud that its Dramatics Club gave them a boost. Fr. Jordan Meyer, O. S. Maurites again this year demonstrated that photography is still America's number one hobby. The photolabs were crowded during after school hours and on weekends as dozens of boys watched a picture come to life; a picture for which they were entirely responsible. Greg Campbell, under the direction of Fr. Wilfred, served the club as procurator. He was responsible for the club cameras, sold paper and film, and checked on the chemicals. Club members submitted their best work at the monthly meeting in competition for cash prizes. Some of these photos appear in this annual. During halftime of the game, the Mayor of Atchison, Joseph Carrigan, crowned Patrica Dougherty the 1964 Homecoming Queen. Maurites came in to shoot their heads off” without competing against anyone. The desire to be the best sharpshooters in the world gripped the minds of many. The rifle club brought this dream to life. Being a member of the National Rifle Association, Maur Hill had the only gun club in the state of Kansas to gain national rating, ranking 39th in the nation. As members of the rifle club, boys learned how to handle a gun, to shoot accurately, and to use free time profitably. Chris Imfen takes advantage of iso- metric equipment. Fr. Kieran hands out new books to Jim Cox, Paul McClure, Mike Hopper, and Mike Gillgannon. Good students read widely, analyze and evaluate what they read, and then share their findings. The Great Books Club, now in its second year at Maur Hill, spurs on this type of activity. Every three weeks Maurites in Great Books gather round a table to share their views on a classic. Guest mod- erators combine talents with Father Kieran to lead these discussions. Again Great Books was found to be stimulating and very popular. Concerts at Maur Hill and the Mount are played before capacity audiences. Director of Maur Hill's band and chorus is Fr. Camillus. In addition to his duties at school, Father is President of the Archdiocesan National Catholic Music Educators Association. Thus he was responsible for setting up the annual Archdiocesan Music Day Festival at Topeka and for improving music curricula in all the Catholic schools of the Kansas City Archdiocese. 116 This year's Seniors dtan't try so hard to prove they were big deals by picking on the Freshmen. Sure, some Freshmen probably feel they were unduly persecuted, but they had it easy. The Seniors.have found more con- structive ways to boost their egos. They've worked on the Tatler Staff, in the Dramatics Club, the Science Club, on the Maurite Staff; they've played sports and entered contests: they have done something constructive. On graduation day, the people watching the Seniors march slowly down the aisle will think this Senior Class is just another in the long, long line of Maur Hill senior classes. But take it from an insider, this is one of the best. Editor HAROLD AGNEW WILLIAM ARENSBERG PHILLIP BLAIR MICHAEL BOLTON LEO BOOS GREGORY BRECK THOMAS BRENTANO RODGER BUFORD RONALD DODGE TOM DUNPHY MICHAEL EAGAN LARRY FARRELL 120 — Seniors are old hands at the business of high school, they've been around long enough to know what's going on. It's no longer a challenge to merely stay out of trouble and follow the rules. The senior is drawn into action by the realization of what lies ahead; colleges for some, the army for others, jobs for still others. The senior begins to assert his course of leadership before he leaves school, and at Maur Hill this desire to lead takes many forms. Seniors head the yearbook staff, seniors spearhead the athletic teams, seniors manage the school paper staff. Seniors are the ones who keep the school moving dynamically forward. There is always a group of seniors clustered around or crowded into the counselor's office. It would appear to be the one most popular room in the school, and very likely it is. For the senior, the counselor's office is a window looking out into the future years of college. What college will I go to? What will 1 major in? Will I like College? These are all questions the senior asks, with an earnest desire to know where and what he's headed for. If he finds out while he's still in high school, he's lucky. Many won't know till they're juniors in college. But in any case, this anxiety about the future gives the senior's high school work new urgency, and a new importance. Lettered 129 The Benedictine system of education has flourished for fourteen centuries, and Mounties have been guided by this system toward elevating their role in life. This has been the real progress--the cultivation of character. But from this has emerged excellence in varied fields of endeavor. These pages are merely synthetic re- cords of an intangible school spirit. Perhaps by using what we nave learned about God, other people, and ourselves, we shall be able to secure positive results from our stay at the Mount. But these are aspir- ations to be realized much later. Now, we work, and pray, and study, and recreate. These are the activities we wish to relate--this is Mount St. Scholastica Academy. Even though Mount St. Scholastica Aca- demy is only nine blocks from Maur Hill, and even though Mounties make up half of our cheering section at football and bas- ketball games, and even though we take Mount girls to our prom and homecoming dances, it seems most Maurites don't really know what makes a Mountie. The following pages are devoted to proving an old, old, nursery rhyme: Janet Welch lets her burro talk her into just a little more sleep. ar... Mount boarders start their school days at 10 till 7:00. Unlike the Maur Hill dormitories, each Mountie has her own separate alcove, with a bed and a dresser. Here Renee Cook and Margie Miller rush (?) to get ready for school. Besides the alcoves with beds and dressers, Mounties also have lockers like at Maur Hill. (Dane Hopkins) J pice... m A few feet from the dorms are the washrooms. Mere Linda Brown and Pat Moyer dream along with the latest issue of SEVENTEEN. Well-groomed Mounties know their score. Afternoons sometimes lead to long lines at the phone. The biggest organization at the Mount is the Sodality. Here they receive a blessing after a living Rosary held in October. Judy Gearhart sell chances for the Academy Benefit.
