Our 1964 yearbook is published in memory of the 35th President of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy Dedication This, our 1964 MAURITE, we dedicate to the memory of John F. Kennedy, who dedicated himself to us. We recall his concern for the education of the young American and his wish to keep students in school. We recall his program for physical fitness and the days of the fifty-mile hike. We recall his ideas on equality to all races and religions. We recall his firmness in dealing with Communist oppression. We recall his eloquent speeches, his Profiles in Courage, and his calmness and assurance in handling all the problems that faced him and us. We recall the hope of peace, which once hatched, began to flourish in his administration. We recall his love for America and his sense of justice. And we recall him as a man, a husband and a father, because he was all of these. He was, in fact, part of all of us — a member of our own families it seemed. John Kennedy was president less than three years. He accomplished much in that time and left many impressions, helping as many people as he was able. Because he was the man he was, he felt restricted and cramped by formalities and long periods of waiting. What he did though, would be commendable to any man. His deeds are an inspiration for us to contribute to our own, to work together as a team, to help one another. In the words of Saint Paul, Bear ye one another’s burdens. And in the words of John F. Kennedy, Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. Father Abbot Thomas Hartmann, O.S.B. 6 President Abbot Thomas, along with Joseph and Herman Schueleand Father Edwin, look on as Maur Hill football players enjoy their steak dinner. Abbot Thomas talks with Maur Hill alumni at Alumni Party. 7 Father Edwin P. Watson O.S.B. Principal FATHER KIERAN McINERNEY, O.S.B. Vice-Principal FATHER EDWIN conducts business over the phone. Administration Father Edwin and Father Kieran discuss the problems of administration. This was a year of change and busy times for the administration. The new vice principal. Father Kieran, shouldered much of the responsibility of running this school, while Father Edwin traveled in the interests of re- ducing the school's debt. The adminis- tration installed seats in the audit- orium, had a student handbook printed, tennis courts built, and a language lab completed. Moreover the adminis- tration maintained and improved the standards of the school, kept the buildings and equipment up, while following the rigors of a religious life. Father Owen gives the blessing to the football players. As in past years, Maur Hill has operated in a religious atmosphere. The chaplain’s office is always open to any boy. Father Owen also is head of scholastic students. Maur Hill has a school paper known as The Tatler. The Tatler is a monthly paper and is published by the students. The students gain a sense of responsibility and practical experience. The Tatler informs the students of important activities going on in the school. o Father Roger and typing students examine typing papers. Father Roger makes sure Charles Geller does his assignment right. Publications FATHER OWEN PURCELL, O.S.B. FATHER ROGER RUBIERY, O.S.B. Brother Jude presides over Sociology class. Refectory SENIORS The seniors this year were a class of many and various activities. The year was filled with anxiety and work for most of the seniors. College Board tests, ACT tests, English themes, and Physics, all added up to a heavy burden. Like a miler straining in the last lap of a race, the seniors worked all the harder towards the end of their high school career. The seniors also carried many responsibilities. They took over the leadership of the Tatler and the Maurite. They led the football, basketball, track, and cross country teams to victory. The senior year passed quickly. Sophomores, attempting to dispel the idea that theirs is the ’’forgotten class,” simply put all they had in what they did, be it a pep rally, studies, dance preparations. Junior varsity games, or any other function. After the ’’new” had worn off. Besides the Varsity sports of football, basketball, track, and cross country, there are the intramurals, which aren't put in the schedule just to take up time. Their purpose is to give everyone an equal opportunity for participation and physical development. The thing most evident in every varsity game this year was the spirit of co-operation, in every play, in every touchdown, in every basket. This co-operation has made the entire sports year a successful one. Special mention should be made of the outstanding football season the Junior Ravens put in, winning 6 and losing only 2 games. By participating in the sports program, Maurites took part in the three-fold purpose of Benedictine life, which includes a time for study, a time for recreation, and a time for prayer. tit ml • ■ V. rft • w gsaas «% sss ' V«W ¥ «M 9 - - % ' V 2 JIk t S£ M3 | Sfegi fee ± JL L.y ¥ sssS ’c- Ci • v Bk LEFT TO RIGHT: M. Under the able direction of Mr. Galley and with the full co-operation of the team and students. Immaculata was turned back and the Junior Ravens emerged with a 7-6 victory, thus marking the high point of the season. From the pep rally at the bonfire to the game itself, spirit was high. It was that spirit which made the Homecoming successful. The presence of many 100's of alumni was also an im- portant factor in the outcome of the game. Half-time ceremonies were impressive as Leta Rae Schrick, escorted by Bill Thyberg, was announced and later crowned Homecoming queen. In addition, the Atchison High School band performed. After the game was the Homecoming dance, which was held in the old gym; a party for the alumni and friends of Maur Hill was held in the Roost. Following in the wake of the game, these main social events of the year were highly successful. Originally intended for basketball players not out for football, it soon proved itself popular enough to attract many other interested athletes. Cross-country depends more on the runner than the coach. When the runner receives his assignment, he is left to his own efforts to develop himself. Because of this, responsibility enters into the picture and each runner has a chance to prove himself. A growing sport, cross-country has become an important part of the athletic program at Maur Hill. In the spring, once the snows have melted and heavy winter coats have been put in storage, a new sport, track, takes over at Maur Hill. Words like rebound,” press, and swish, are put away, and in their place come new terms pole-vault, sprint, and hurdle. Since there are many facets to the sport, as the javelin, the pole-vault, the hundred-yard dash, track appeals to all types of Maurites—short and tall, big and small. A track man, like a football player, has special talents-not inborn talents, but ones that must be realized, disciplined, and above all, used to the best of his advantage. Since he is on his own much of the time, he is given many opportunities to show what and how well he can do his job. Jim Lemanski fights to break the tape first. v Lucien Watkins goes over the bar in the high jump. May Day The Juniors and Sophomores put up a good light in the tug of war. Larry Thomas and Tom Heelan finish in the 100 yard dash. A Maurite late in the day. Come first of May, Maurites, like all teenagers, feel spring surging through their veins. The faculty sets aside a day in which the students may release this feeling. They conduct events such as the baseball throw, the hundred yard dash, the high-jump, relay races and swimming events in such a fashion that all students are inclined to participate. The sophomores and juniors compete against the seniors and freshmen. The group receiving most points is awarded a weekday night off campus. The day ends with a tug-a-war between the strongest student team and the faculty. Individual awards are given for the highest score of each class, and for every student who breaks a school record. Religious education is en- hanced through daily Mass and religious activities. For students engrossed in journalism, the ’’Tatler and Maurite offer an opportunity to gain experience in publications. There is also a radio program, the M M Monitor, which the students themselves produce, direct, and present. The Great Books club encourages its mem- bers to study and learn about the ideas of many great men. For scientifically minded students, there is the Science club. Its members apply the things they have learned in the class room. For instance, they participate in the Atchison County Science Fair, have built an oxygen condenser, and have placed plans for an observatory. For those students interested in music, there are always the Glee Club and the school band. The Glee Club and the school band give concerts in the fall, during the Christmas season, Easter season, and in the late spring. For those who wish to help the school as much as possible, there are the letterman's club, the newly or- ganized pep club, and the student council. Students joining these organizations are expected to give wholeheartedly to every school event, whether it is cheering the RavensJ on to victory or helping to clean up the campus. J 102 Student Council Student Council officers take names for a student trip. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: Don Johnson, pres- secretary-treasurer, talk with vice-principal Father ident; Ed Boos, vice-president; and Ron Lundgren. Kieran. James Gerst prepares a notice for a pep rally. Dick Thomas and Carl Ruder usher at game. M-Club M-CLUB OFFICERS: James Coleman, sergeant-at- arms; Steve Ruthmann. president; Alan Hermesch, secretary-treasurer; and Joe Turner, vice-president; along with moderator Brother Jude Highberger. The primary purpose of the Maur Hill M-Club is to in- still better school spirit in all school activities; to increase co-operation of the student body with the faculty; and to promote interest in the extra- curricular activities of the school. Conducting ceremonies at the Intramural Homecoming and the Basketball Homecom- ing are some responsibilities of the M-Club. Members also usher at home basketball games. Cheerleaders take breather. Pep Club The Pep Club is the newest club in the school. It was started to help the school’s cheering section improve. Maur Hill spirit has always been high, but seldom organized. The job the Pep Club was to do, and has done, was to co-ordinate the students from the Mount and Maur Hill into an effective cheering section. The officers of this club are: Tim O’Bryan, Jim Riehle, Martha Poehler, and Buffy Van Hout. CHEERLEADERS: Judy Loftin, Jackie Weingart, Pam Wilds, Lita Rac Schrick, Tommy Weingart, Raynette Loftin. The cheerleaders lead the Pep Club. M M Monitor Mary Margaret O'Connell tapes the Mount section of the show. The ”M and M Monitor” is a radio program directed and produced by the students of the Mount and Maur Hill. The program broadcasts music and school news. It gives the students of the Mount and Maur Hill an opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of communication, and gives them a chance to carry out responsibility. Jim Cox tapes show. James Gerst, James Riehle, Michael Gilgannon, Tim O'Bryan, John Behrmann, Patrick Kelly, John Head, Bob McAnally, Bill Thyberg, and Carlos Mejia. The Maurite is an outline of the activities at Maur Hill. The students publishing this yearbook gain valuable experience in the field of journalism. But the Maurite means more than this to the students of Maur Hill. These students are proud of their school, and wish others to know about it: to know about the varsity teams, the different clubs, and the great spirit Maur Hill possesses. The Maurite allows the students to take home a pictured account of the school, and show their parents, relatives, and friends why they have chosen it above all the other schools. Father Wilfred Fangman. moderator 111 Fr. Gabriel gives a Physics demonstration to Science club members. Science Club Tom Rutledge works on a science project. The Science Club is a rather new organization at Maur Hill. This will be its fourth year, but the Science Club has accomplished much in this time. It has entered three science fairs. Its members have built an electronic computer, conducted studies on certain drugs, and have built an oxygen converter. In the future, the Science Club has plans for an ob- servatory. The main purpose of the Science Club is to allow the student to put to use the things he learns in the classroom. Students thus have a better under- standing of their studies. Ron Cretan displays his winning project. TOP: Science Club picnic. BOTTOM: Mr. Stork gives Mike Lewis some advice on his project. George Schmidt SCIENCE CLUB OFFICERS: Mike Hopper, Jim John K,cbba works on a Tesla Coil for the Science Fair. Lemanski, and Jim Keller. Photography, American number one hobby, has also become the hobby of many Maur Hill boys. The object of photography is communication. Each boy who succeeds or fails to convey his thoughts through pictures is learning a hobby he can use all his life. The club’s fine new equipment gives each member a first hand know- ledge of photography’s many tricks. New members spend many enjoyable hours learning the ABC's of photog- raphy, while the veterans strive to get better action, story, and impact in their pictures. The club provides fun and knowledge for all who participate. Pat Lysaught and Neill Miller try their hand at portraiture. Robert Hey, Pat Kelly, and Mike Monahan look over club photos. Richard Basham, Jim Lemanski, and Fr. Wilfred survey new photo equipment. Camera bugs Bob Mohr, Dennis Nastav, Richard Basham, James Phelan, Tom Weishaar. Malachy Morgan, Pat Gardner, Jim Keller, Pat Orford, Bob Miller, Richard Agnew and Greg Campbell practice their skills on Mountie model, Mary Margaret O'Connell. Camera Club Pat Orford, Dennis Nastav. and Tom Weishaar check out club equipment. Father Roger, moderator, talks with Tom Dumphy, news editor; Don Johnson, editor-in-chief; George Leiszler, feature editor; and Mike Murphy, sports editor. Tatler Ted Neises, circulation manager, looks up in- formation on an alumnus. Maur Hill's newspaper, the Tat- ler, provides students interested in journalism with an opportunity to develop their talents. If, out of curiosity, a student joins the staff, he may become more interested through association with the paper. Writing talents are developed —the ability to write concise, meaningful sentences, along with a general under- standing of newspaper form. Published semi-monthly, the Tat- ler reports news, sports and items of general interest. The staff, under the direction of Father Roger Rumery, O.S.B., does all it can to insure a faithful and accurate report of the news. 1 17 Doug Wesselmann, Tom Rutledge, and Bob Jones take aim. Tom Weishaar, Pat Orford, and Dan Flanigan become engaged in a discussion on How To Read A Book. Mr. Stork throws in a new idea to the discussion group. Great Books There are many types of education. The most effective is self-education. With this in mind Father Kieran has instituted a Great Books program. There are thirty-three par- ticipating students, each of whom is given a paper- back classic and three weeks in which to read it. At the end of that time they come together in three groups and discuss the ideas of the book they have just finished reading. Each discussion has a moderator whose job is to introduce topics, keep order, and limit the dis- cussion to pertinent ideas. However, all ideas brought up are the students1 and not the moderator's. The purpose of the Great Books Club is not so much to give the student a mastery of the works discussed, but to give him a taste of true great ideas, and a hunger for more. In this it has succeeded. Tom Dumphy gives the rest of the group the benefit of his ideas. Pat Orford and Paul Hunter watch as Joe Dunn tries to lose weight. 120 Greg Milfeld asks Mike Eagan a question in the Junior play Refund as Pat Murray, John Wlersma, Matt Lysaught, and Greg Breck look on. Tom Rutledge and Steve Sayler work on Pat Lysaught's face. Dramatics Father Jordan poses with the cast of A Sound of Hunting. Frank Migliazzo calms Pat Gardner after Gardner hit Mike Mitchell in the play Bloodstream. The experience the student gains from working with dramatics is im- measurable. Public speaking, mem- orization, and self-discipline all play a part. He may decide to go on in dramatics after high school, depend- ing on his capabilities. Therefore, what he does now may be invaluable to him later on. A view of the auditorium from the projection booth. St. Scholastica to present musical programs at various times during the year. The first of these took place shortly before Christmas vacation in Maur Hill's auditorium; the second about a week later at the Mount. In both instances, Father Camillus directed Maur Hill's band and chorus. Each of the programs were well received by both students and parents. Fr. Maurite’s Pastimes Even though Maurites are kept busy with all the activities and school work, they still have time for unscheduled pep rallies and unplanned song fests. Maurites enjoy a feeling of belonging to a family at Maur Hill. Everyone knows everyone else and everyone is in the gang. There is always a game in the gym or on the intramural field and anyone can join in the fun. There is never a dull moment at Maur Hill. Seniors haul logs on detention. Roy Flannery types a letter home, John Manzotti and Dick Thomas set up scenery. Pat Lysaught, John Kreipe, Bob Jones, Jerry Miller, Frank Migliazzo, and Bill Lane sing along with Fr. Eric. MOUNT Dedicated to scholarship, religious principles, and social graces, the Mount strives to attain these goals by offering the students the best possible opportunities in scholastic and spiritual achieve- ments. These purposes are in keeping with the spirit of the community s founders and have been the guideposts in the growth of Mount St. Scholastica Academy from a small grade school to its present status. The activities of Mount St. Scholastica Academy, curricular and extracurricular, pictured on the following pages, give only small insights into the Mount life. The basic classroom disci- plines are emphasized for intellectual development; and various clubs, societies, and sodality functions instill leadership, participation, co-operation and loyalty--all necessary ingredients of a pleasant and influential personality. All these activities are held and made to function in the light of militant Catholicism just as the spokes of a wheel get their direction from the hub. Because Mount St. Scholastica Academy is Maur Hill’s counter-part, Mounties and Maurites co-operate in many extracurricular and social activities. The following pages are the highlights of the past year. The educational, social, and sporting events which are compiled in the following pages will bring many memories in the years to come.
