Dedication In June, 1962, Abbot Cuthbert McDonald stepped into retirement after nineteen years as abbot of St. Benedict's Abbey and President of Maur Hill and St. Benedict's College. During Abbot Cuthbert's tenure in office, Maur Hill and St. Benedict's began their massive building campaigns. The Abbey Church and St. Augustine's Hall emerged from the drawing l)oards into reality. And more important, at least to us at Maur Hill, the new Maur Hill was realized at last. Thanks to Abbot Cuthbert's foresight and inspiration, Maur Hill was able to build its new academic building and gymnasium even when the building campaign seemed to be faltering. Abbot Cuthbert seemed always ready to go out of his way for Maur Hill. During school activities and on feast days, he never failed to visit the campus. During each visit he offered Mass for the student body, and in his talks reminded us to keep up our studies and to ask ourselves why we are at Maur Hill. Should a Maur Hill student visit the Abbey, Abl ot Cuthbert always broke his busy schedule to chat with him personally. To Maurites, it seemed that the sincere question, How is everything at Maur Hill?', was always on his lips. Indeed, Fr. Abbot took an avid interest in all phases of Maur Hill life. Often he came to give the faculty fatherly advice and took recreation with the Fathers. And. certainly, without his leadership and encourage- ment the new Maur Hill would still be a pipe dream. As the motto of St. Benedict's Abbey ( Deus providebit—God will provide ') so aptly puts it, God, in the person of Abbot Cuthbert, gave Maur Hill a loyal backer and sincere president. Thus we students take pride in dedicating this yearbook to Father Abbot Cuthbert O.S.B. 3
