MAUR HILL SCHOOL Atchison, Kansas MAURITE A new Maur Hill took form when Archbishop Hunkier dedicated Maur Hill's two new build- ings October 15, 1961. Maur Hill took on more than new buildings Dedication Day--we set out on almost a new way of life. The design of our new academic building signifies this new outlook, as the altar stands in the center of activities. The four wings of the academic building form a cross with the chapel in the center in which we gathered each day at the middle of the day's grind to offer to God the Father in union with His Son all the business of our school life. Needless to say, we seemed to study harder and play better. This had made for the best year yet at.Maur Hill. The Maurite staff in recognizing this, has tried to put out an annual that will recapture for a moment the many events of this historic year for Maur Hill. Communion time during Mass on Dedication Day. The Archbishop speaking on the Dedication of the new Maur Hill buildings. Abbot Cuthbert McDonald assisted by Fr. Owen blessing the new altars for Dedication Day. Prior Theodore Leuterman hanging the crucifix in the front of the new building. Within the last four minutes of the Effingham game, John Flynn swam, as we all remember, across this line to climax a great game and a really great Maur Hill football season. In spite of Effingham's string of eight consecutive, lopsided victories, the Ravens in traditional style, fighting mud, rain, and superior weight, dethroned the tough Effingham eleven. Throughout the season the Ravens won all but three games. Rockhurst tied us, Miege and Leavenworth beat us by one touch- down, in freak scoring plays. Basketball The highlight of thisyear'sbasket- ball season was playing in our new gym- nasium. The players, and the rest of the students greatly appreciated not having to traipse across town to the St. Benedict's gym for every home game. The team could practise on a modern full-sized court and the old gym was turned over to intramurals. It was evident that the new gym in- spired the whole student body witn pride. The players worked harder. The rest of the students came to the games well dressed and cheered with more enthusiasm. Seniors formed the nucleus of the team. The three returning lettermen were seniors, Mike Con rad, Eleno Lopez and John Hughes. Mike Pecenka did great work in his first year out. And two other seniors, who came up from the B team, Marty Peters and Ronny Pierce, often hit the scoring column. Juniors John Stuart and Tom Danaher also earned letters this season. Though our season record was fair- ly good, it was often quite disappointing. We won several of our games. But we lost several, too, in the last minutes, when it looked as if we could win. 64 Mike Pecenka blocks an Immaculata shot. f A Benton player tries in vain to take the rebound from Leno Lopez. • Tom Danaher dives to take the ball away.
