Through Abbott Cuthbert's leadership, prayers, and sacrifices, we enjoy many of the superior qualities found here at Maur Hill. We wish to thank him for his devoted work with Maur Hill. FCtih t This year has been the most fruitful for Father Edwi n Watson, O. S. B. . He has made the building project a reality. He has stepped up the scholastic standards of the school. With these and other ac- tivities, he has still man- aged to counsel many stu- dents, perform the custom- ary duties of principal, and keep his good humor. We have one question to ask with wonder and ad- miration: How does he do it? t-tXLu -, Fr. Alphonse Berning, O.S.B., stepped up his activities considerably this year. He con- tinued to increase the books in the library and completed the new filing system. English I and IV students will not easily forget his classes as will none of the Religion IV students. Besides being Vice-Principal and librarian. Father attended to the nourishment of the students in the refectory. 5yl. s Eoth i Augu6fat Returning after a long absence, Fr. Augustine Rottering, O.S.B. was a stranger to almost all the Maurites. However, his friendly personality, sin- cerity, and helpful advice quickly overcame this obstacle. He is pastor of Saint Patrick's Parish, teacher of Physics, and advisor of the Radio Club. FaJtk v W In his roles as in- firmiarian and athletic director Fr. Wilferd Fangman, O.S.B. cared for the un- healthy and inspired the healthy. Dramatics Club was formed under his guidance. He taughtEnglish I, and III, as well as speech. The M Club benefited much from his wise advice as moderator. 6 Fctih t Fr. Martin Taylor, O.S.B., completed his second year as Chaplain and prefect of the priesthood students. He guided the St. John Berchman’s Society and taught several classes. Among these were Latin I, II, III, IV, Spanish I and Religion II. Father is one of the most active outdoors men on the fac- ulty. Ctf Returning after a year's absence obtaining a Master's Degree in music is Father Camillus Wurtz, O.S.B. Father took over as head of the Music Departmenl and conducted the band, glee club, and choir. He also gave private instructions to several in- terested students. His regular classes were World History, Religion III, and Latin I. 7 Fftfcfuw' f-fe uufttt Another color in our life here at Maur Hill was Fr. Herman Fangman, O.S.B., with his keen wit. Father taught Religion III, Geometry, Alge- bra I and Mechanical Drawing. He was also prefect of the day-students Mass and the swimming pool. Fctfefuw Qtilyu l! Many of us will recall the hours that Fr. Gabriel sacrificed in our behalf He was a constant reference for mathematics and science students throughout the year. He taught General Science, Trigonometry, and prefected the boarders Mass and St. Placidus Hall. 8 Foih i Rage i One of the busiest yet the jolliest members of the faculty was Fr. Roger Rumery O.S.B. Father was in charge of all school publications, mainly the Tatler and Maurite. He taught three typing classes, two English II classes, and bookkeeping. Added to his heavy burden was the task of Moderator of Camera Club. Never will we forget his jolly personality or his help in the classroom. Fotlnj t B'dOuvv Seniors reaped great rewards from Fr. Brian Kelly, O.S.B., and his American History and Sociology classes. He also taught World History. Father made sure that the students' desire for recreation and tid- bits were supplied in the Roost . We will always remember his friendly jibing. 9 Fttfcflflw JtAAx)' Fr. Andrew Gottschalk, O.S.B., was in charge of much of the discipline this year. He was prefect of St. Maur Hall and of the dormitory. A great number of students participated enthusiastically in his intramural programs. He taught Algebra I, II, and Religion II EaJtk v 0w6K All right, everybody out, was the familiar cry of Fr. Owen Purcell, O.S.B., prefect of the locker room. As assistant in the intramural program, he provided much of our recreation. He taught Latin I, II, Religion II, and English I. Many of his hours were spent in friendly conversation with us around the locker room. 10 ita . Qojm L One of the more inspirational faculty members was Mr. Galley. Athletes will long, long remember the fiery pep talks he gave in football and baseball. He was re- spected in his Physiology, Citizenship, and Physical Education classes. Also, Mr. Galley coached 'B' basketball, was school's Guidance Councilor, and junior class moderator. Ita. Eugew Completing his second year here at Maur Hill, Mr. Eugene Lazzo instructed Maurites in Consti- tution and Algebra. He coached the Jr. Ravens' line in football, the varsity basketball, and the track team. He was moderator of the freshman class. 11 flA u. Edw ul Qt ik In his first year at Maur Hill, Mr. Stork taught General Science and Biology. Being a newcomer was no ob- stacle to his joining the spirit of the school. He participated in in- tramurals, attended ath- letic events faithfully, and became a good friend to many students. U U DfitUuS facCtiAtklJ Mr. Dennis McCarthy instructed the fine art of drawing along with the history of art. He made good impressions on the student's mind with his weekly colored movies. R uihf-fcut uv There are numerous odd jobs plus a regular full time secretarial schedule which Miss Ruth Hansen performs. How- ever, she will al- ways take a few minutes out to assist a student. Qtfatvb Wheels Mrs. Evelyn Clayter is performing one of her many duties. Here she is cleaning a priest's quarters. Much gratitude is owed to these nuns for the wonderful meals they prepare. Yet we do not stop to think about the amount of time needed to serve 120 people thrice a day. The Sisters’ Mother House is in Mexico City. BOTTOM ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Sisters Maria, Lucia, Clementina. TOP ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Sisters Flavia, Giselo, Judith. 13 MR. ED HEINER discusses teaching problems with the first semester practice teachers Galen Rotting - haus, Thomas Carey, and Thomas Waller. THESE TEN practice teachers are part of St. Benedict's supervised student teaching program. The purpose of this program is to make it possible for participants to be- come state certified teachers after graduation along with experience in teaching under seasoned teachers. SECOND SEMESTER PRACTICE TEACHERS: FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, TOP ROW: Jerry Letoumeau. Jim O’Brien, Richard Farrell. BOTTOM ROW: Richard Albers, Mark Flynn, Vince Harrington, and William Sulzman. 14 CJms off '60 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS ARE LEFT TO RIGHT: Frank Pianalto, Secretary; Aurthur Harned, President; Fr. Alphonse Berning, O. S.B. , Moderator; Tom Homan, Vice-President. We seniors are proud to think that these past four years have been among the most prosperous and beneficial of our lives. As a single group we have worked towards a single goal. To advance spirit- ually, mentally and physically in an ever growing world, has been our goal. Here at Maur Hill the Benedictine Fathers have devoted their time and energy to help us realize this goal. Each of us has learned the true meaning of trial. By combining our efforts with those of our teachers, we have learned to overcome obstacles whether they be great or trivial. Among the members of our class are a number of able leaders who have carried us through the rough spots. Only too well we realize how much we are indebted to our parents and guardi- ans for the sacrifices made on our behalf to provide a good Catholic education and to you, our parents and faculty, we ex- press a sincere gratitude. Life has in store for us many severe trials. What we have learned through our classes, social activities, and sports will provide the solution for many of life's problems. Yes, all of these things together make us a proud class, the class of '60. 16 DENNIS J. BERGER 816 Page Street Atwood. Fine performances were rendered in both football, basketball, and baseball. Juniors proved themselves capable of working on the Tatler and .Maurite. Dramatics along with the glee club, took juniors into the realm of their extra- curricular activities. With their senior year ahead of them, we wish the class of '61 the best of luck in their endeavors at Maur Hill. Finished with their first year of high school, and the novelty of boarding school life com- pleted its first phase, they now look forward to their future years at Maur Hill with anxiety. Frosh have shown some surprising talent in sports and studies. In sports, some have shown potentiality for varsity, in football and basketball. They learned the proper methods of study and some even made the honor roll. However, more were forced to attend JUG on occasions. With a year of experience behind them they should rise to great accomplish- ments and greatly improve in all ways. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS are photographed with Moderator Mr. Lazzo.
