Faculty and Parent Cooperation The Maur Hill Atchison Parents' Club was established this year to promote the welfare of day scholars. This objective embraces support of anything which will further the spiritual, scholastic and social betterment of Atchison boys, approximately half of the student body. The by-laws drawn up by President Louis lochems, Secretary-Treasurer Francis Bush and Father Gerald Mesmer, OSB., and approved without change by the membership cover most possibilities and are flexible enough to admit amendments. The closer relation between home and school resulting from this organization has already brought about a better understanding. The customary mixers after formal meet- ings have afforded parents opportunities to speak with individual faculty members and to discuss ways of improving Iunior's scholastic and general standing. There's nothing equal in satisfaction to both sides of any story, and the club has proved itself a medium for supplying this. The executive committee demonstrated its progressiveness in appointing a standing committee on suggestions, on which Dr. Charles Finney, Mr. George Stanton, Mr. Maurice O'Keefe and Father Alcuin Hemmen, OSB., served. If the individual suggestion, written and dropped in a special box, is of such a nature that it might improve the school or the club, the committee brings it before the membership for discussion and action. If it is merely a personal complaint about the methods of some instructor, the committee usually recommends that its author approach the particular teacher and talk over matters. Mr. Peter Arensberg and Mr. Iohn Tabor served as the first entertainment committee. A special committee in charge of the spring bingo party, which was open to the member- ship and all friends of Maur Hill, was composed of Mr. and Mrs. Ioseph Clark, Mr. and Mrs Leo Ruhlman, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Murphy and Mr. and Mrs. William Wolters. The large crowd thoroughly enjoyed the party and refreshments and expressed the hope that it would be followed by similar affairs next year. The first year's activities of the Atchison Maur Hill Parents' Club show that it fills a desired need. The first steps of the infant organization, directed by its capable executive committee, were taken cautiously and wisely. There is every reason to. hope that the club will have a bright future and make many a contribution to the welfare of Atchison youth in attendance at Maur l-fill. Besides serving at Maur Hill members of the club serve at special functions and at solemn and pontifical Masses, at Mt. This years team will be built around veterans Iohn Nass P. I. Keeley Leroy Murphy Bob Bush Ioe Kelly Don Tabor Dan Galas Dick McGrath Willie Park and with Father Fabian as coach the team is again looking forward to a successful season. The services of Bob Desbien Tom Flynn William Clark and Iim Marr seniors who graduated last year will be greatly missed. M CLU B The M Club consists of students who have distinguished themselves in athletics, whether on the gridiron or court and who have received the monogram as a reward. They are seen in action in the pictures of this section of the yearbook. This year twenty-three football players, of whom fourteen are seniors, won letters. Of the eight who received letters in basketball, three are seniors and five, juniors. All except one of these lettered in both sports. P. I. Keeley, Leroy Murphy and Phil Wolters are the seniors who earned monograms in two major sports, Dick McGrath, Terry O'Keefe and the O'Shea brothers are juniors who distinguished themselves in a similar manner. Don Tabor, junior, lettered only in basketballg the others whose pictures you see merited their letters in football. P, I. Keeley, Dick McGrath, john Nass and Don Tabor were first stringers on the state finalist baseball team of 1946.
